Cool to hear they dusted off a couple songs tonight in Atlantic City. Still no sign of tuning down.
Anytime (AP/Cain)
I'll Be Alright Without You (Deen)

Still think this song is in AP's wheel house. Trying to understand why they don't play it more.

I was there. They also did Just the Same Way with Deen and Cain on vocals.

Could have done without La Do Da transitioning into Anytime. Would have preferred Feeling That Way instead.

Forgot to mention...we also got When You Love a Woman as the first encore before LTS.

No City of Hope or anything else from Eclipse.

Michaele was visible stage left and she and Neal were making kissy faces and the like to each other all night.

Good stuff. Those Perry/Rolie hits always seemed to have more lyrical and musical authenticity behind them, over some of Cain's later contrived hokey wedding crap. The band has more integrity when they play that stuff. Also good to see Deen back on vox. More please.

They did Anytime, as well, at Jones Beach on Friday night.

Also, they did La Do Da & they also segued from Lights into Deen doing Still They Ride.

I have to say (having been present Friday night), I was a little worried about the show. Last year, the sound was muddy, Neal was "noodling" a little too much, & Arnel's diction/delivery was pretty bad. THIS YEAR, it seemed that was all fixed. Neal was reeled in a bit. The sounded was much better. You could tell Arnel's stronger efforts to enunciate.

BRAVO! Whatever the guys are doing now, they NEED TO STICK WITH. IT'S WORKING!

Neal's version of the Star-Spangled Banner was very well received in AC. His noodling intro to Wheel in the Sky really killed the crowd though. Michaele was dancing and shaking (convulsing?) just off stage left the entire night.

Revel is a hotel-casino in Atlantic City that has only been open a few months. I have seen concerts in most of the big casinos in AC: Trump Taj Mahal, Tropicana, Resorts, Borgata, and now Revel. Revel definitely has the nicest concert hall by far. I hadn't seen Journey before on this tour, so I don't know how the sound compared. I thought they sounded pretty good. Arnel seemed to be in pretty good form. I am glad that they are letting Deen sing lead a bit more. He did a pretty good version of IBAWY, but I would have much preferred to hear Mother, Father (would have liked Still They Ride or Where Were You also). The highlight of the night for me was hearing Just the Same Way. That alone made the two hours each way of driving worth it. Also glad that they are opening with Majestic. I think Neal said that was a song that he never really felt was finished. Would love to hear an extended version of it. It doesn't transition well into AWYWI though, so they might be better served by re-ordering the set list. Glad to hear Never Walk Away. Would have liked Higher Place as well. Could have done without LTS. Drop La Do Da and add Feeling That Way where it belongs, transitioning into Anytime. I'm not a big fan of When You Love a Woman. If I had to pick one song from Trial By Fire, it would probably be Message of Love.

The biggest crowd killers were La Do Da and Neal's guitar intro to Wheel in the Sky.

Those keys in Only the Young are pretty annoying, and they draw so much attention to themselves, especially when you see that no one is actually playing keyboards then.

Set list had a few extra songs since we didn't have Pat Benatar (she was playing at Six Flags Great Adventure) or Loverboy (I think they were playing somewhere in Ontario).

In memory of Deano, I let out a big "Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriga" yell when they took the stage.

Good for Neal recognizing my brilliance by playing IBAWY. He'd better play it in Louisville...

But I must deduct points for handing the vox to Deen on that one; Neal, play IBAWY w/ Arnel AND Mother, Father/STR w/ Deen. And Resonate. And make it happen in Louisville please.

An additional -5 points for the gay prerecorded keys on OTY about which I will never stop bitching. Either hand an accoustic guitar to Jon or take it out of the set list entirely.

Never Walk Away
Open Arms
Ask the Lonely
Stone In Love
I'll Be Alright Without You
Who's Cryin' Now
Don't Stop Believin'
Separate Ways
Faithfully
Send Her My Love
Any Way You Want It
Resonate
Change For the Better
Chain of Love
Mother, Father
Higher Place
Wheel in the Sky

^ Louisville set list, Neal. I know you're reading. Arrange it any way you want it (lulz), but make it happen. We have 11 hits for the casual fans, 2 songs from Eclipse, 2 from Revelation, 1 from Arrival, and a song for Deen for us diehards. An overall hard rocking assemblage. You win, the fans win, but most importantly, I win. Make it happen, Neal, you know I'm right.

As Dean Wormer from Animal House would say, "zero-point-zero."

Not a single song from Eclipse. I was expecting them to play City of Hope. No mention of Eclipse whatsoever.

Never Walk Away went over pretty well, and I am sure most of the fans never heard that song before. Why not play something from Eclipse and plug the CD? Pull your balls out from between your legs and take a chance.

It couldn't have gone over any worse than La Do Da did. I'm sure no one was rushing out to buy Infinity because of that song.

I've already spent the cash, so I'm just hoping Neal makes it extra memorable for me and my group.
It's still not my ideal set list, but it's good enough to satisfy the major concerns of most concert-goers. We have almost a full dozen of the greatest hits (some of which aren't in regular rotation but should be: WCN & IBAWY) while ditching the relatively lame ass songs (LTS & OTY), 2 of the best songs from Eclipse, 2 of the best from Revelation (I would accept Wildest Dream, it's a kick ass song), and the ultimate Augeri staple.

Navarro wrote:I doubt Neal gives a rats ass what anyone here thinks. Lol!

Maybe. 2 years ago, I'd have definitely said, "No, he absolutely cares" but maybe not.

Either way, though, he should listen to me on this one. Make it happen, Neal!

Eclipse is a very good album. Journey fans are impossible to please. If they would have put out another Revelation, everyone would have bitched it was too safe and by the numbers. It was a very brave move for an older band even if the fan base didn't like it and it didn't sell. Success does NOT equal excellence always. There are plenty of examples of this.

Great stuff. Herbie said early on (in the "Castles Burning" interview) that the band should be utilizing both SA and Deen's voices. Huge mistake not to have this guy sing lead on a few album tracks. "A Better Life" is eerily Perry-esque.

Next to not hiring Chalfant, this is Journey's second biggest mistake. As Herbie says, Deen is a "franchise talent" who is underutilized. That said, I think IBAWY should be handed to Arnel. Deen does a very good job, but this song is more suited to Arnel's fatter, stronger vocals.

No signage for any of the show posters hint at this being the Eclipse tour. I think that album has been put to rest as far as "still having legs."
I'm of the opinion (which isn't worth much) that if they are going to do anymore shows sans the opening acts, any kind of effort of playing something that doesn't come from the Perry era might go over as well or better than non requested pre-Captured tunes that they seem intent on digging out of the catalog.
You're already playing the dirty dozen, no need to make an extended set list more of a homage to old songs that no one under thirty has ever heard of, especially when you have over four dozen post Perry tunes that your current singer could take a whack at when you're looking for time fillers.

La Do Da in particular needs to be thrown in to the same pit that they tossed Eclipse into.

Still think this song is in AP's wheel house. Trying to understand why they don't play it more.

Pineda has already said in the SB that that song is part of Deen's vocal catalog. If Castronovo has to spell Arnel a few tunes now and then, he should be afforded the luxury of having his own set of songs to choose from. Seeing as the band said last tour said they didn't want to confuse the audience, having different singers singing the same song on different nights probably plays into their argument in that regard.
