Blerd Briefs: Steve Perry’s Journey & Looking For A New Mrs. Kenny G.

The Journey tribute band known simply as “Journey” is currently rolling through the Northeast. The band even includes original members Neal Schon & Ross Valory, as well as 80s-era keyboardist Jonathan Cain. They stopped in at Jones Beach on Friday, August 10th. Opening up for the Journey tribute band was the actual Loverboy (ugh!) and Pat Benatar. I did not attend. While the idea of seeing the band that defined my childhood seemed like a good idea, Journey ended in 1997 with the departure of Steve Perry. While new singer Arnel Pineda is a great vocalist, Neil Schon appears to be in it for the money. After Perry left Journey in 1997, Neil replaced him with Steve Augeri, who sounded very much like Perry. Jeff Scott Soto then replaced Augeri in 2006, and a year later, Pineda was found.

While Pineda isn’t trying to imitate Perry (to which I commend him), the band could call themselves something other than “Journey.” The bottom line: I’m not into tribute bands. I have no interest in seeing “Fair Warning, Riders on the Storm, Led Blimpie or Almost Queen. Seeing someone else singing Journey’s songs won’t work for me. Every band has an evolution. They change over time, things happen – band members join, leave, die, whatever. Steve Perry wasn’t Journey’s first lead singer, but for me, from childhood to infinity, he will always be the definition of who they are as a band. I can’t escape that.

In related news, the Man with the Golden Voice, is rumored to be working on a new solo album. In an interview, Steve Perry revealed that he has written over 50 new songs and is rumored to be working on his first solo album since 1994’s For the Love of Strange Medicine. Hardly anything has been reported since then. I can’t wait! We all need new frontiers. Indeed.

OK, this one is for the ladies…

After 20 years of marriage, Kenny G has filed for divorce last week. In doing so, he has revealed that his real name is Kenneth Bruce Gorelick. So if you’re a sucker for a sultry soprano saxophonist, Mr. G is single, and on the rebound!

Just think what life with Kenny could be like… Every day could be the lap of luxury – he’s successful, got great hair, and if you hit it off with him, the future Mrs. Gorelick’s home will be filled with music! Sure, it’s elevator music, but hey – you can’t be too picky these days.

He is seeking joint custody of their 14-year old son, so kid-friendly is a must!

Best of luck to y’all!
Perry's good natured bonhomie & the world’s most charmin smile, knocked fans off their feet. Sportin a black tux, gigs came alive as he swished around the stage thrillin audiences w/ charisma that instantly burnt the oxygen right out of the venue.TR.com

Hey, at least with the exception of spelling Neal correctly at the beginning and failing to thereafter, he at least included all the post-Perry lead singers...lol.

With the exception of mentioning Pineda and Soto, I think I read the exact same thing back in 2001-2005. Is the fact that Journey still tours news this person? This kind of stuff is like a skipping record.

Whatever. This is the same old shit that get's spewed about a hundred times a year by butt hurt idots who don't want to even try to give the new lineup a listen. After 5 years it's not a new lineup and is not on trial. They have proven themselves to be successful, much to the dismay of some butt hurts. Touring success is abundant and that cannot be denied. No Journey tribute band sells as well as the real deal, not even close. So this inept fuck can go pound sand, as far as I'm concerned. You don't have to be particularly brilliant to figure out that Journey, even in it's present form, has something thousands of people a night still want. They vote with their wallets and concert attendance is brisk. Nobody gets fooled, as was squealed about years back. People, by now, know what they are getting when they attend a show, yet they come in droves. Many of these ticket buyers of the newer Journey are repeat offenders.

St-o...you're welcome to express your opinion, the blogger had his...no need to resort to name-calling. He seemed to be a long-time fan...able to reiterate the band's history and personnel accurately...so anything but "inept"...

Oh, please! Calling Journey a tribute band is just ridiculous....and inept.

I was never here for you to be a fan of mine, nor me a fan of ya all. It is fun hanging out though. :D

The only time Loons believe something is a matter of opinion is when it disparages a Perryless Journey and its members. That's the only time they're not eager to read something positive.

In either case, the tribute band argument is a fangless one. Cain and Schon were co-architects of this music and instrumental in every step of their existence. Can't cover your own song.

There is literally no such thing. It's paradoxical, counter-intuitive. For one to be a Loon, one must blissfully surrender all aptitude for basic human comprehension, let alone higher thought, in order to make room for Perry's awesomeness.

Now there are smart Steve Perry fans, but there is no such thing as a smart Loon. It's like saying there's such a thing as a tall short person, a fat thin person, an honest politician, etc.
