Open Arms w/ solo section

Postby Pelata » Wed Oct 17, 2012 1:01 am

When I saw Journey 10/3 in Greensboro, there was an absolutely killer solo section added to "Open Arms"...I'm sure they've done it the whole tour this way, but it was the first time I had heard it like this.

Is this something new? Or perhaps a resurrection of an older version of the song?

Either way, my LOF guitarist and I both were like "Damn, that was awesome! They should have recorded it like that!"

Is it the same solo they added and recorded on the Manilla dvd?
(go to the 5:15 mark)

Yep...they added a bunch of new twists on songs for the '09 tour. In the Download Fest show you can hear it on DSB, SW and AWYWI.

Good stuff.

I've never seen the Manilla DVD...but, again, that added solo section then turn-around back to the chorus is awesome! I wish they would have thought of that when recording Escape...

Indeed great arrangement!

For a song that I thought wouldn't benefit from a guitar solo, I was sure wrong. Schon makes that one fit like a glove, as usual.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

This (and the other innovations they made on some of the classics on this DVD/tour) is definitely one of the bright spots of Journey's otherwise dismal last few years. This turns an otherwise dogshit uninteresting song into something worth listening to every now and then.

I found there was a dip in that particular solo that spoiled it

This is arguably the best rendition of this song ever played live. I tried and could not find one better. True it doesn't have Perry's vocals, but the arrangement tops all efforts on this song, ever. The vocals are pretty spot on, actually, not implying anything here, but Arnel does this song justice.

Yeah, It's great that Neal and Co. stepped it up and tweaked the tunes...now only if they had a real frontman with balls, swagger, and total command of the audience. Foreigner sounds like it may be dissolved. I wonder if Kelly Hansen can hit these notes....
