Well, that article pretty much sums it all up accurately. I've always admired his voice and stage performance regardless. Another thing to consider in AP's situation is, he was hired for a purpose, it may not be entirely up to him as to what he actually is able to do in the band. They got him to provide a specific function. The core goal of this band is to stay very exposed and active and to do so they continue to perform the classic hits from the bands past success. Also consider that AP did do original music with previous bands that he was part of in the past. Culturally, music is written differently in the Philippines compared to what Journey is known for. Songs that are a success in the Philippines most likely wouldn't go over so well in the Western world. So there is a lot to consider when discussing this issue.

It is a situation whereas you strive for recognition as an individual and later discover you face a double-edged sword. Case in point, Bruce Lee faced the same criticism when he became too westernized by certain groups of his peers. From divulging “sacred” knowledge of the martial arts (educated in numerous variances) to outsiders, to disbanding his identity (Asian/Cantonese). In truth, he generated an interest via the entertainment industry. Through this media, numerous celebrities trained with Lee and the popularity of his physical exhibitions brought forth his recognition. In part, he needed to fulfill his devotion of his art. His heritage came with him. It is similar to an entertainer that promotes a cause. They use their status for public awareness. Look at the legacy Lee has etched globally today.

Yeah, I wouldn't have given it a second though until i read the comments and realized how many Filipinos were okay with the guy's point. Usually the pinheads and chazters would swarm these types of articles but they were oddly silent for the most part.

Yeah, I wouldn't have given it a second though until i read the comments and realized how many Filipinos were okay with the guy's point. Usually the pinheads and chazters would swarm these types of articles but they were oddly silent for the most part.

Whoever wrote that drinks from the same toilet as Freddie Aguilar. Even the most devout pinhead can see through this and the jealously within the writing. See, even Filipinos who live in Nipa huts, have enough grasp of the English language to write a scathing review. Then the monkey is trained to deliver it to the press.

His name is Tony Bennett and he's made a very successful career of it.

Pretty harsh assessment and obviously unfair, singling out Arnel and Clarice.
But, that's just reality, foreigners with talent need to expand their horizons and assimilate into western culture, if they want any kind of fame and fortune in the entertainment field. America rules.

You do know Tony Bennett's claim to fame is singing the standards, right? You know, compositions from the early 20th century that are made popular the whole world over by multiple artists ( the majority of Christmas Carols qualify as standards too). A totally different genre from what Pineda and Pempengco are in.
I don't even think that is the point the author is making. What he is saying (I'm assuming) is that while other Pinoy artists do covers and have had success with them, they also have found fame from their own original OPM music. Martin Nievera, Regine Velasquez, etc. are famous for their homegrown tunes first and foremost. That is something that Charice and Arnel haven't attained in their homeland and that is what he is criticizing them for I guess. I'm not saying the guy is right but for you to lump in somebody like Tony Bennett is just ridiculous.
I think the blog is more in line with those Filipinos who still have some post colonial hate towards yankeeism.
