Arnel sings a few lines from new single

Postby JRNYMAN » Wed May 08, 2013 6:09 pm

That's the title of this vid just posted on YT yesterday. I was so shocked by what happened to his hair that I completely forgot he sang a couple of lines here....

It's a product jingle.

He went grey quick. Wonder if he'll dye it before he starts touring again.

NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

As Donbot says: jingle, not single at 2:38..
The Puregold chain of stores signed him up for promo purposes.
Keeping the essence of Journey, and corporate rock, alive..

If folks are thinking about the tune at 1:30, he's singing Beautiful Girl, an MOR staple by Jose Mari Chan (1989).
Definitely off it now...

Ahhhh... now I get it. Funny thing is, I copied and pasted the title straight from the article. It it says "jingle" now instead of "single" somebody noticed the error and changed it.

I don't agree. The dude's got no rasp on his speaking voice or his singing voice. The fact that he can sing that stuff that quietly and that high points to his voice being in great shape.

It's amazing what simple rest can do to a voice.

Arnel isn't going to sell an album of original music. It will flop. He should do a covers album of songs that were hits in the Philippines of acts that were very popular there like Sting, Duran Duran, New Wave/Synth Pop, etc. He would do probably pretty good saleswise and he could add a couple of original songs in the mix.

Outside of the Philippines, who would buy such an album?

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that Arnel will do original material. Not only would he be involved in that, but he's got lots of sources, current and from his past, who'd be involved writing originals with him if that's where he's headed with his long term career goals. He's been part of that long before Journey, I'm sure he'd be part of that again.

I see you have turned a critcal eye, much different than you were couple years ago. It's really sad that a band like Journey "thinks" that the only songs that sell are the DD. They have younger fans who would probably be receptive to new music, but hell, the band won't support their latest works in concert. They have many great songs since Perrry, but nobody will ever know that if they refuse to play them.

At this point Journey should just go out and play a later mix. What is the worst that can happen? The legacy members will continue to get paid their royalty money. The tours will still sell well. Seems they are complacent and not willing to take any chances, but those same chances are what many of us fans are begging them to take.

It's more I have lost interest, than critical, because they have gone backwards. But I guess critical when discussing why I have lost interest. At least several years ago they played four or five new songs and had a few deeper cuts and changed the setlist up a bit while touring, experiementing, so made you want to travel to see more than one show. It's like they gave up and lost all interest. Now, they pretty much do a predictable setlist and call it a day. They have such an unbelievable discography and they are rich and don't need to tour, so they should take some chances and not do a 90-minute same old setlist tour. If anything, do it for the fans and for themselves creatively. .

Plus, they have Deen. They need to do a two-hour show, add in some of the easier songs that aren't as vocally challenging for Arnel since he will be singing a few more and give Deen more songs also and it could be a fantastic show. Again, going back to DM because they just started their tour a week ago and I noticed this. Depeche Mode has a lead singer, but Martin always sings about three ballads a show and lately he isn't singing his own solos from albums (which are limited). He has taken on some of Dave's songs from albums and is singing them instead of his predictable usual suspect songs he usually sings and Dave is all for Martin singing some of his songs. Of course, Martin wrote them. But this gives more variation to the setlist. Journey has a.secret weapon in Deen. Thus, they could easily do a two-hour show and not kill Arnel (because Journey music is much more challenging vocally) and really have fun with the setlist and still play the hits for the casual fan.

And I still say I think Gregg would come back for a tour. I think he would be open to it. And the free publicity and hype they would get for promotion would be beneficial to filling seats. How exciting would that be, two hours of Journey music really delving into the Rolie era with him there and also more varied Journey music across all three decades. I'm dreaming, I guess. Only Europe seems to get better shows setlist-wise.

I agree, Bryan. I think Arnel's voice is holding up much better than anybody would have expected after touring for quite a few years now and his age.
