2001 DVD

The Vegas performance of La Raza Del Sol this week had me nostalgic and I pulled out the Journey 2001 DVD. LRDS in that concert is one of my all time favorite performances. Listening to more and more tracks, I was reminded how good that show was ... how tight the band sounded... and especially how good Augeri was singing in those early years. Granted, he never had Perry's range or soul, but his voice had a unique quality that fit in well with Journey's sound. I know there are haters out there that still think his vocals are canned on the 2001 DVD -- but I for one am willing to suspend disbelief and enjoy that moment in time.

SteveO posted the link to LRDS on his FB page that night and the first thing I said when it started playing is that it was miles away from being as good as the 2001 "live" performance.
And while there was a lot of "help" injected into the DVD, which of course improved the overall quality of the show's elements, the performances delivered by each of the band's musicians were outstanding (speaking specifically about LRDS). You could watch that part of the DVD without audio and see how tight they were and how into it each of them were individually. Far and away my favorite performance of that song.

Deen Castronovo is the star of the 2001 DVD.

Truer words my man... truer words.
I've said numerous times that I wholeheartedly believe Deen's goal that night was to destroy that particular drum kit. I've never seen him hit so hard for an extended period of time as he did that night - before or since. Watch Higher Place with that in mind and notice how much force he's hitting with... Woof! There are several times he literally grimaces as he hits due to how hard he's hitting. But, that notwithstanding, his performance that night is what really made me sit up and really take notice of just how good a drummer he is - so much so, I re-listened to several albums which featured him and heard his parts in a whole new light. Lots of subtleties and wicked fast triplets and roll-offs I'd not taken notice of prior - sorta like the difference between Todd Sucherman's performances on the album vs. live.
