Drivers haven't stopped believin' in Journey as the 80s chart-toppers had the No. 1 and No. 4 spots in Insurance.com's survey of best driving songs.

Insurance.com commissioned a survey of 2,000 drivers and asked them to choose the best and worst songs for driving, as well as music they listen to in the car that they don't publicly admit liking.

The following percentage of voters chose these songs as the best car music..

"Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey: 30 percent
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen: 27 percent
"You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC: 22 percent
"Any Way You Want It" by Journey: 22 percent
"Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane: 21 percent
"Dancing Queen" by ABBA: 19 percent
"American Girl" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: 16 percent
"Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" by Michael Jackson: 15 percent
"Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen: 14 percent
"Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival: 14 percent
"September" by Earth, Wind and Fire: 13 percent
"Every Day is a Winding Road" by Sheryl Crow: 13 percent
"California Love" by 2Pac: 13 percent
"Drive My Car" by the Beatles: 13 percent
"Little Red Corvette" by Prince: 13 percent
"Runnin' Down a Dream" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: 12 percent
"This is How We Do It" by Montell Jordan: 11 percent
"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers: 9 percent
"Holiday" by Madonna: 9 percent
"London Calling" by The Clash: 6 percent

Percentages total more than 100 because respondents were allowed to choose up to five songs.

Road warrior themes drove the popular write-in choices for best road music."Highway to Hell" by AC/DC, "Radar Love" by Golden Earring and "I Can't Drive 55" by Sammy Hagar topped the list of respondent picks for songs that people enjoy hearing in the car.

Journey Places Two Hits Among 'Best Driving Songs' List. Really?

1/14/2014

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorzelan ... st-really/

To be sure, any “best of” list is open to interpretation and virtually begs argument. But who out there – please give us a show of hands – actually regards Journey’s 1980’s stadium-rock anthem “Don’t Stop Believin’” as the best song to blast while driving? Seriously?

That’s according to a recent survey of 2,000 motorists conducted by Insurance.com, who at least partially absolved themselves by also picking “Who Let the Dogs Out” by the Baha Men as the worst song to enjoy (or not, in this case) while behind the wheel. Either way, this is what they mean when they tell motorists to “drive defensively.” Heaven forbid one gets stuck in traffic behind a road rocker who’s in the middle of an air guitar dual with Neal Schon during the solo in Journey’s signature tune.

Other most-loved songs among the top five include Queen’s bombastic “Bohemian Rhapsody” (think Wayne and Garth in the old AMC Pacer), AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long,” another Journey hit “Anyway You Want it” and Tom Cochrane’s beloved “Life is a Highway” (your kids know it from the first Cars movie as sung by Rascal Flatts).

“Some people mock the Bay Area balladeers, but there’s no denying Journey has a fan base, given they took two of the top five spots for songs that people enjoy when driving,” said Michelle Megna, Insurance.com’s managing editor.

We’d cut the San Francisco songsters some slack if it weren’t for the unevenness of the material here. What happened to “Radar Love” by Golden Earring? It’s not even in the top 20! Even a first-year law student could make the case for including AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” or Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac (or Aretha Franklin’s “Freeway of Love” for that matter)?” Was Chuck Berry’s “Ridin’ Along in My Automobile” too obvious a choice? How could the respondents ignore any of the early Beach Boys’ surfer odes to their cars (“409,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “Little Deuce Coupe” etc)? Yet tunes from ABBA, Michael Jackson and Madonna made the list while classics like Commander Cody’s “Hot Rod Lincoln,” War’s “Low Rider” and Edgar Winter’s “Free Ride” are nowhere in sight.

Of course we could just run this list past a download-crazed 17-year old to shred for a lack of death-metal music and make the rest of feel 100 years old for still listening to tunes from the cassette era.

For the record (or eight-track, cassette, CD or MP3 file), here’s the list of the best 20 songs for driving, as determined by 2,000 motorists polled by Insurance.com:

1.“Don’t Stop Believin,’” Journey.
2.“Bohemian Rhapsody,” Queen.
3.“You Shook Me All Night Long,” AC/DC.
4.“Any Way You Want It,” Journey.
5.“Life is a Highway,” Tom Cochrane.
