Perry/Rolie, Perry/Cain, & Pineda/Cain Duets???

Postby Final Frontiers » Sun Jan 05, 2014 6:05 pm

I've been reading a lot of old posts and there's a lot of debate over who was better Gregg Rolie or Jonathan Cain. While I looked up a bunch of Journey videos and found a bunch of Perry/Everybody vocal comparisons including Chalfant, Hugo, Augeri, and Arnel. I couldn't find a single Rolie/Cain comparison. Which is funny, because didn't Rolie pick Cain because he thought he would be able to play the piano, rhythm guitar, and sing his songs. But I can't find any Perry/Cain duets either. At least not on You Tube.

I did find this Pindea/Cain one.

Did Journey just retire all the Rolie/Perry songs after "Escape"? Did Jonathan Cain ever sing any solo Gregg Rolie songs? Did they retire all the pre-Perry Journey songs after Escape? They had enough hits to play at that point. Could someone make a Rolie/Cain comparison? I think it would be great fun.

Here's JC singing "Don't Stop Believin'" solo in Nashville.

Journeys sound fundamentally changed with Cain...

Rolie was a lead singer/Hammond B3 player... Cain was a piano/synth, BV singer..

I personally liked the blend of Rolie and Perry's voices better than the post Rolie era..

Cain sings the Rolie parts whenever they cover those songs.. he does OK... but Cain is no Rolie vocally...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

On the Generations tour, which was the "evening with" two-set combo of Rollie and Cain eras, Jon played and sang many of Gregg's parts and I was surprised how well he did with them. I never thought much of Gregg's voice so it wasnt that big a stretch, in my opinion. Nevertheless, Cain held his own.

Thanks I knew one of you hard core hoarders would have the stuff. I'm still surprised that they only sang together once.

Since I'm still looking for duets and am curious about the Rolie/Cain sound comparison. I was wondering, who sings the Rolie parts on "Fly 2 Freedom"? All the info I've seen of it only mentions backing vocals and lead, NOT co-lead  . There are 3 Rolie/Perry duets on the album. Who do you think you're fooling Chalfant? Plus for all the talk of Hugo, Jeremy, and Chalfant in tribute bands- there's no mention at all of Perry Stevens of Journey Unauthorized (is that his real name? is that a wig?, can you imagine if that were Hugo's name!!! )

What do you all think of the Gregg Rolie tribute singers? Do they do a good job? A Rolie/Cain/F2F/whoever vocal comparsion could be fun?

Here's a Santana tribute band version of "Black Magic Woman"- they're called Cross Fire.

Here's Augeri and Cain doing "Just the Same Way." Imo FTW/Anytime should be a concert staple.

While vocally inferior to the original, there's great energy on this clip and Augeri sings with soul. No mere Perry copy cat here.
If you are a fan of the Rolie/Perry trade-offs, also be sure to check out The Storm albums with Rolie/Chalfant.

Thanks for the link. I forgot to look for Augeri/Cain. Too bad there's no video. I would've liked to have seen 1 or 2 more Storm videos where Gregg got to sing lead. If he'd displayed more of the charisma he did in "She Makes Me Feel Alright" The Storm might've gotten more publicity. So it seems like Steve Perry never sang any of the Rolie/Perry duets ever again after Gregg left Journey  . I'm just going to fan wank that Steve doesn't sing them out of respect because no one can do them justice the way they could (until proven otherwise). Just another example of him not wanting to crack the stone. *LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA* Just let me enjoy my disillusion  .

Since we're sharing here's Journey Unauthorized's "Feeling That Way/Anytime" with Perry Stevens  and Joel Pelletier.

I saw this super fan video of all the TV appearances of "Just The Same Way"!!! :D Did you make it? Are there any videos of "Someday Soon"?

Here's Augeri/Cain "Feelin' That Way/Anytime".

I downloaded the version of "Velvet Curtain/Feelin' That Way" from off of Time 3. It was interesting to hear the differences between the demo and the finished version. And then the differences between Gregg Rolie & Robert Fleischman's "Anytime".

Neal must've gotten jealous of Gregg and went "I want to sing a duet with Steve too!!!!" Never heard or saw "People And Places" before, they should sing it more. Did they ever do it with Augeri or Arnel?

Here's a another version of "She Makes Me Feel Alright" which is different from the Chicago Soundstage one. In it Steve makes a slight lyric change on his opening. Instead of "She makes me feel alright", he says "You make us feel alright".

Which changes the meaning of the song a bit. It's already about a girl who's (ahem) hot to trot who makes Gregg feel more than alright (and is presumably not a doctor) so when Steve sings "you make us feel alright" it makes you think they're both dating or sharing her or singing about a threesome  And considering they're rock stars from free lovin' '60s California, it's not that hard to believe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My9pPQI87cc

And yes, Steve Perry makes every pre Perry Journey song better  .
