‘If you can’t get along, it’s a different thing’: Steve Perry on a possible Journey reunion

As Steve Perry eases back into music after a cancer scare, he can’t help but look back fondly at the things he accomplished with Journey — even if a reunion still appears to be a remote possibility.

Before Perry joined, Journey had never had an album reach higher than No. 85. Afterward, they never had a release go less than platinum. In fact, the early-1980s Perry-fronted albums Escape and Frontiers sold an astonishing 15 million copies in America alone.

Then, he vanished. Perry hasn’t been with Journey since 1996′s Trial by Fire, and hasn’t issued a solo project in two decades.

Perry, however, has been slowly crafting a return to the business, discussing the possibility of new music — and collaborating with AWOLNation on the follow up to its 2011 debut Magalithic Symphony.

Neal Schon reached out when the guitarist found out that his former Journey bandmate had undergone surgery to remove a cancerous growth on his face. But the band has moved on since Perry’s departure, with Arnel Pineda serving as their frontman over Journey’s most recent studio efforts.

All of it appears to have put Perry in the mood to reminisce.

“Bands are the most amazing thing,” Perry told Artisan News at a recent Guitar Center event. “The older I get, the more I do realize how important what we had all together was and how it worked. I have not been in the band in years. The older I get, like I said, the more I realize that we brought that out of each other: I brought things out of them and they certainly brought a lot of my vocal stuff out of me — just rising each other to this place. If you can’t get along, it’s a different thing, and that’s probably the biggest chemistry thing that I recognize now.”

As such, Perry confirms, there are still no plans to rejoin his old band.

“I haven’t worked with Neal, no,” Perry says. “We’re trying. It’s tough. I’m doing my best in that area and I can only do so much.”

What does the "we're trying" part mean? Cain/Perry/Schon were such a great songwriting team.

Good question. Its amazing how tough it is still after all these years for Steve. Just seems like they could forgive each other and at least have a decent friendship. Time is ticking away and life seems to short to be holding onto stuff for years and years. Neal laid his pride down and connected to Steve, would like to see Steve at least give it a chance. Will be interesting to see if/how committed Steve is to repairing it.

Even if a Perry/ Journey reunion can never be worked out, for what ever reasons, it would be nice to see Perry and Schon (maybe Cain too) pair up and try and make music. Maybe a mixture of blues and R&B to bring out the best of them both. Journey comes with too many restrictions and preconceived ideas of what it has to sound like, and I would rather just hear them be creative and do something new together.

Wow. Maybe this could be happening in the near future? In the interview, Perry seems raspy just by talking. If they were to reunite for the ultimate farewell gig, I can see a 5-10 song playlist tops.

Te UltimateClassicRock.com and ClassicRockMagazine.com stories on Steve Perry talking to Neal Schon/Journey once again are totally inaccurate.

I can 100% confirm there has been NO current communication between the camps and while everyone is on good terms, with no issues, there are ZERO plans for any kind of reunion or attempts to work together in the foreseeable future.

Just not happening folks. Please pass on. Full story at MelodicRock.com later today...

Listening to the interview I don't hear "If you can't get along" - I hear "that you can't get alone" i.e. Perry describing how together as a band they achieved something unique that was not possible alone.

If you read the article - the transcript also clearly refers to "just rising each other to this place that you can’t get alone".

So why is the thread's title so misleading ?? :?

I was amazed at how these other news sources cut up what was originally said by SP, and put a different spin on it.
As you had stated he did say.....just rising each other to this place you can't get alone.....

While 100% inaccurate it's cool how many media outlets have jumped on this story, even 3 local radio stations, including a cheesy gossip station here in MN reported on the story.
Steve Perry even hinting, or in this case, doing his best to answer a difficult question with some kind of grace, is BIG news.

Its great so many want this to happen (I used to as well). But now I am glad he went out on top.
There is no way a Journey with Perry could have sustained into the 2000's with the success they saw in the 80s' and even with TBF.

That said a one off acoustical set for charity would be great, but only with Rolie and Smith, and NOT a Pineda duet.

I don’t like these false headlines/newsprint that imply SP wants to rejoin the band and Neal says no. Went over the statements Steve made with the reporter at the Drum event, and my take on this is he was delivering a pragmatic answer to a common theme that is always asked when the Journey guys face reporters. And, throughout all the years, SP has not once deviate from speaking with reverence of his time with Journey. So, this time again, he mentions how “good” their music were and misses the camaraderie of writing together. As for his statement that he has reached out to Neal (or “trying”, anyway), that’s probably an off-shoot of Neal letting out publicly that Neal has contacted Steve. This was his way to respond in kind to Neal’s gesture. Who knows if the 2 ever really “talked?” Andrew says no, and he’s probably right.

As for making music, SP’s only telling us what we all want to hear, what we’ve all been waiting and pining for from him all these years. Of course, he’s conflicted, I think he truly wants to please his fans but is also such a perfectionist and “own worst critic” (his words) that the last phrase was “I can only do so much.” All this is talking about his own music … no connection to asking Neal for permission to re-join Journey … that’s ridiculous.

I think its always been a case of people "hearing what they want to hear"....

Neal is the one who's said "the door is always open" regarding Perry rejoining... which was simply Neal drumming up attention for he band.

That Perry has never acknowledged that comment speaks pretty much to how he feels about any kind of reconciliation...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
