Journey Covers By Professional Artists

This is the thread for professional Journey covers. Not the ones you hear on American Idol or The Voice.

Did you know that Scandal and Patty Smyth covered "Only The Young" in 1984 before Journey put it on the "Vision Quest" soundtrack?

It sounds like the exact same track with different vocals. Somebody who knows how, can you make a Steve Perry/Patty Smyth duet :) :?: Pretty please!!!!

Dream Theater covered "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" as a part of their "The Big Medley".

"I Wanna Go Back" was not originally Greg Rolie's song, but Bill Satellite's from 1984.

When Gregg Rolie returned from a brief retirement following his departure from Journey, he became the second — but not the last — big star who tried to make a hit of Billy Satellite’s 1984 song “I Wanna Go Back.”

The original take, co-written by members of Billy Satellite (which included future 38 Special guitarist Danny Chauncey), stalled at No. 78 on the Billboard charts. The third one, of course, became a No. 14 smash in 1986 for Eddie Money — with the addition of a squalling sax.

In between, “I Wanna Go Back” appeared as a slower, more contemplative track on Rolie’s radio-ready eponymous solo debut in 1985 — where it went absolutely nowhere. Rolie, going it alone then for the first time after co-founded two supergroups in Santana and then Journey, said the entire process was a learning experience. After dabbling in more overt pop sounds on Gregg Rolie, he returned to the grittier fare associated with those previous successes.

“I learned a lot, doing that first solo album,” Rolie said, in an exclusive SER Sitdown. “Before I had always relied on a band; I never had to design the whole thing. They were always a team effort, but when you go solo, it’s totally different. That was a new experience for me. I got better on the second one.”

Looking back, Rolie’s take on “I Wanna Go Back” certainly didn’t lack for star power: The track includes keyboardist Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band, as well as Jason Scheff — who would go on to replace Peter Cetera in Chicago — as a background singer. A fickle buying public, however, flocked to Money’s subsequent version anyway.

“I did it first, and he had a hit with it,” said Rolie, who is at work on a Santana reunion album these days. “That’s the way it goes.”

Wow! Hadn't thought of that. It would have totally worked. Mickey has/had the range and some front man star quality. Was that ever in play?

Gotta say. Listening to all of these. There is no band like Journey and no singer like Steve Perry. All of them are lacking in one way or another.

Not true. Scandal released it for on their "Warrior" album...a pretty good album, actually. But, a couple years or so before Journey went all soundtracky.

And, Scandal gives the correct Journey writing credits...so Journey couldn't sue them either.

There was an interview from way back where Journey heard Scandal's version, and didn't like it...and wished they have never given them permission to record it. It's not as good as Journey's version, but it's not horrible.

I picked up an entire CD at Wal-Mart with other bands and artists covering Journey songs. Can't remember the name of it though.

Without derailing the entire thread. Here's Jeffery Scott Soto's "Send Her My Love" from his album "Essential Ballads".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kO4uBDZJ68

I never hear anybody talk about his covering Journey before. I mean on an actual recording for sale not just in concert. EB came out in May 2006 and he joined Journey in December 2006. Soul SirkUS was from 2003-2005. Was this just JSS covering Journey because he loved it or was he "secretly audtioning" as others who've recorded Journey tracks have been accused of?

Glee Journey Medley from 1st season finale "Journey To Regionals". Including: Faithfully, Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin, Anyway You Want It, and Don't Stop Believin'".

Has anybody ever covered anything from the Augeri era?

Not to mention "Believe in Me" with Schon is a great Journey song...even if not officially Journey. Just tremendous.
