Have both shows on cd... I'll dig it out to listen and see which one is better quality. Back when I joined this board, we always have people uploading, posting links, sharing stuff. But, nobody does this anymore. It's been years... let me see if I still have my free Megauload (?) account to do this.

annie89509 wrote:Journey indeed played 2 shows at the Rainbow Hall (is it still standing? no idea) in Denver, May 8 and 9, 1979. They're soundboard quality recordings, so I think the Japanese release must be a consolidation of the 2 nights. Make sense, due to copyright issues, it could only be put out for sale in Japan ...and not here in U.S.
Just listened to both cd's ... wow, sound is impeccable ... no fuzzy audience recording these 2 shows ... I'm surmising, from the opening monologue (a Host DJ? identified radio station call letters, the date and venue, bands) that these were professionally recorded by the radio station. Here's what I have on the cds:
(1st Night)
Intro-
On A Saturday Night
When You're Alone (It Ain't Easy)
Lovin-Touchin-Squeezin
City of Angels
Do You Recall
Lady Luck
Just the Same Way
Lovin You is Easy
Guitar Solo - WITS
Patiently
Opened the Door
(2nd night):
Intro -
Majestic
LaDoDa
Next
Feelin That Way
Anytime
Lights
Too Late
Kohoutek
On A Sat Night
L-T-S
City of Angels
Do You Recall
Daydream
Lady Luck
Just the Same Way
WITS
Patiently
As I said...this is top-notched quality stuff. The band so tight, music-wise... SP at his peak vocal prowess. Like the masses, I prefer the later songs w/JC... the DD... but you can't deny this is the band's musical origin... had 70ish vibe all over it. The early songs where GR shared vocals with SP ... quite a few on here ... love them all ... I've always liked Gregg's voice (so smooth, soft and sensual).
This is must-have for all true Journey fans ... ones who would frequent this board. I'm going to need a lot of help uploading on YT ... and pretty much techno lightweight.
Frontiers, since you brought it up, I could maybe send over to you via email. Then, you could share with others on YT ... PM me your email address.

Tater ... are you dapudster on YT ? I'm impressed, you also have quite a collection ... a whole concert on video from 1978? ... that is VERY rare stuff!!!
Scarab ... if you'd like to PM your email ... I'd be happy to send over that soundboard track of Next from this Denver concert for you. The thing is, though, I recently switched to a new computer with the win 8.1 os, and being technically challenged, I'm going to need my son to teach me how to do certain things that I could easily work in my old winXP pc before. Sucks having to learn new stuff. Be patient.

Okay, I burned the concert onto a CD so I could listen to it by the pool. It sounded fine until it got to "Lights" and it got hinky. I don't know why cause it sounds fine on the computer. I haven't finished listening to it though.
What I am struck by is how good Rolie-Perry were and how well they ad-libbed. They changed up "Anytime" giving the end a "The Girl Is Mine" vibe and how Perry added lyrics to "On A Saturday Night", and of course (not at this concert) but "She Makes Me Feel Alright".
I still don't get how Steve Perry got labeled a "mike hog" and that "nobody got along with him". He's brimming with chemistry with Gregg Rolie here
. It's bubbling over and getting all over the place. I almost stepped in some. Why can't they all just get along?????????

Didn't read this earlier, FF. Guess it's just you and me carrying on a conversation in this thread ...![]()
I prefer to hear the later songs (written with JC) ... those were the big hits, after all. But I have always said, musically, the earlier concert boots with GR were the best. This is the period when SP's vocal prowess was in it's peak form. Do you have, have you heard, the jaw-dropping (hair raising) SP live rendition of Opened the Door (Houston Summit, 1979)? I'm going to go back and find a few of his memorable performances of songs and post it here for you.
