What's next?

Like the subject says, "What's next?". Aside from Revolution Saints, things have died off. No talk about Neal's next solo album, no more talk about another Journey album, nothing on the Santana album, no mention of future touring plans...

I would like a third Arnel album in the mold of Revelation crossed with Eclipse. Hooky, commercial with some extended jamming. Think the end of "Anything Is Possible" or even Deen's drum solo on "Where Did I Lose Your Love." Both of these songs are classic Journey and radio friendly, but also show the musicians stretching out and indulging in their craft. Not really a fan of them touching Arrival. Leave that alone.

You would think that maybe they are just going to take some time to do their own things. With Deen's new project, I am sure he doesn't want to just do the album and nothing to support it. If the Santana thing does happen, then I am sure Neal wants to focus on that. But agreed, there's nothing to talk about Journey related...

Many Frontiers projects are released without touring support. I could see a few dates in Europe, but I truly doubt anybody is getting behind this in a major way.

Agreed, what I meant to articulate overall and wasn't as clear as I should have been was that, they all seem content doing their own things right now, putting J on the backburner for a little bit, or at least until the 2015 summer tour season again.

Ah, but don't we have this Arnel contract duration to contend with? If I remember, he was only contracted through a certain period (I don't recall when it was up). If we have a long, protracted period without new Journey material or dates, it could be sayonara for this line-up - or any other.

That always sounded like a rumor to me. The dude has been fronting the band since 2008, pretty much as long as Augeri. I don't think he's a part time employee on a trial run basis anymore.

Ah, got it. Since Eclipse, Schon has released what? 2 solo albums, with another on the way. Schon is clearly bored again. If Blades and Castronovo have chemistry, this could be the greatest Journey spin-off band since The Storm.

Maybe (hopefully) it'll be a good thing for them to have a break from Journey. As far as Revolution Saints, I think it'll be well-received by fans of those involved and of the genre itself, but like marco said, it's unlikely there will be any major touring behind it. I knew Schon had been working on Vortex, but I hadn't heard much about that in awhile, although I don't follow his newsfeed that closely.

Did anyone else happen to read the article about Billy Joel a few weeks ago? The media outlet basically asked Billy why he had not recorded any new music since the 90's. Billy's answer was that he knew he wouldn't be able to produce any new music that would sell and/or get radio airplay so he is content to simply play music from the 70's and 80's during the peak of his popularity. I loved Billy's honesty and I wish Journey would follow suite. They haven't made a decent album since Arrival.

I would like to see Cain have that surgery....the one to remove the stick from his ass.

Honestly, I am glad to see Journey take a break, I hope it lasts a little while. Let Neal get the solo stuff out and work on Santana. Let Deen get some more respect from a singer's perspective. Arnel will probably "recharge" with family time but it would be cool if he would work with some different peole just for the experience of it. Jon needs to find joy again. Maybe he will write a huge hit for someone else (Nashville?) Give these guys some more outside experiences to they can bring it back to the group later. Create a spark within Journey again.

If not, hang it up. Break out a summer tour once every couple of summers. But make it clear...

Have you been to a Journey concert lately? For the most part, Journey DOES play music from the 70s and 80s. That's ALL they play. Billy's defeatist attitude may be "honest", but it still sounds like a cop out. Of course, Billy is more than content to show up, play for an hour, and collect a fat check. Who wouldn't be? Luckily, there are still artists of his generation who aren't nearly so content to sit on their ass.

Ditto. In fact I would rank most of their material since Arrival as being better than Arrival. Not that I dislike Arrival. it was a good album. But I'll take Eclipse over Arrival any day.

Arrival is one of my favorite Journey albums, but Revelation and Eclipse were solid efforts. Revelation from top to bottom definitely ranks up there as one of the most well rounded albums they made as far as track to track. I can still listen to Revelation straight through 'till this day. Revelation was pretty damn solid. Excitement for the band from the public at the time and Arnel's hiring gave them momentum and it was felt in that recording process.

Disagree, but I thought Eclipse was a massive disappointment, and think maybe they've just run out of good melodic material. Generations had a few great tunes on it, and Revelations was solid though.

I love everything they've done post Perry, especially Eclipse. The lone exception would be that there were too many sappy bubble-gum ballads on Arrival.

Its time they recorded new music. You can't keep touring without a new album. 4 years is long enough for an active band.

Agreed. Only weak release by the band was Generations. Following up on Arrival, fans expected a classic and Gens was a directionless mixed bag. Love Revelation and Eclipse tho.

I also have enjoyed the post-Perry output and think the majority of it stands well in its own right. I will agree that Arrival was a little heavy on the ballad aspect, but that doesn't mean they aren't bad songs. From a marketing or business standpoint, their best bet is to do something along the lines of Revelation, but it sucks when you have to pigeonhole a band you like. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I thought the Red13 material translated well in the live scenario with the playing style of those songs.

On a side-note, and may as well be a pipe-dream, it'd be great to see one more studio album, a Captured style album that goes beyond the hits and more of their later output, and another live DVD in a similar format. Beyond that, if the band cuts back on the touring circuit, pull strings and release the classic shows that are in demand.

Lieftime of dreams and All the way (which was a terrible choice for the lead single) were awful.
Loved by you is okay, but is even more "marry poppins" then any Journey song.

But for the rest of Arrival, top notch.

Whats next? Get Cain to write some "ROCK SONGS" like Resonate (Journeys best song post Perry.
And bring back Jack Blades.

Even though Generations was a mixed bag, there are 5-6 songs I like on it. Quick count, they've done nearly 60 songs (counting imports, EP, released via another artist) post Perry and I like about 35-40 of them. That's pretty good. Regardless, 2011 is a long time ago for new music and its time.

PLUS, "With your Love". And while "Kiss me Softly" and "I'm not that way" are great tunes ... they are slow. So 4 bubble gummers PLUS 2 other slow songs was too many for one album. The US release was definitely improved, and if it were ever re-released or re-recorded a less is more approach should be taken.

I like Arrival, but it was way too ballad heavy. For that reason I prefer all of the Journey albums since Arrival better.

IMO, Arrival was at it's best on the Rocking songs like "World Gone Wild" "Higher Place" and "Nothing Comes Close."

And two of those rock tunes weren't even on the original version! What a letdown that would have been. Kalodner, or whoever at Sony , obviously was directing the album toward soccer moms. I remember Neal teasing Arrival as another version of Escape. The band should have also added "Remember Me", "Have a Good Time", "I Can Breathe", and any of the Jack Blades leftovers like "Never Too Late."
