Why Isn't Mugs Cain In Journey?

Postby Final Frontiers » Wed Apr 22, 2015 5:14 am

I did another thing last night. Another random internet search.

Did you know that Jonathan Cain has a brother who's a professional drummer? His name is Tommy "Mugs" Cain and he worked on Michael Bolton's "The Hunger" along with Neal and his bro and Michael Baird, and Randy Jackson :D .

He also had to have played with Tane Cain on The Terminator soundtrack. Plus his website says he played with Gregg Rolie- I'd like to know when that was.

This does beg the question, why didn't Jonathan ask Mugs to play on "Raised On Radio", or join Bad English and/or Journey? Not that I'd want Deen to have never joined the band. He's an invaluable asset as a singer as well as drummer.

He should totally be playing with Neal's son and Jon's daughter in American Beauty.

Yes. In addition to the Michael Bolton album, "Mugs" has also played on some of Jonathan's solo material. He's a good drummer. But I doubt that he's up there with the likes of Steve Smith and Deen Castronovo to put it nicely. Also, it might not be a good idea for Jonathan to have his own brother in Journey with him?

If I recall correctly, I believe that Steve Smith's son might be a drummer? If so, it would be cool to see Smith's son work with Schon's son. They could have Jim Peterik's son join them too. :D

Actually, I remember hearing that Mugs did play for Journey during Augeri's tenure as a stand in for a show or two when Deen was sick.

I could have sworn I read or heard an interview a long time ago somewhere In which Deen was asked first and said yes.
I do remember Mugs filling in on one of the tours when Deen was injured.

By that very low standard, Mugs can claim full membership in Journey and now get gigs primarily as "Journey's former drummer".

If Jonathan and Mugs' real last name was Friga- who changed it first or did they do it at the same time? And did they legally change their name to Cain? Or did Jonathan change it first and then Mugs followed?

I'm fairly certain that Jonathan changed his last name to Cain, first.

They have another brother who did not change his last name. But he's a pro golfer, not a pro musician.

Well here he is playing a country version of "To Be Alive Again." I'd say he has the ability to play Journey's material, but not the exciting fills and techniques of Deen Castronovo. I wonder if Mugs and Deen or Steve Smith have ever jammed together.

That's at Addiction Sound.. Cains studio in Nashville, owned by Cain and David Kalmusky... the guy who did Eclipse....... and the engineering and mixing on the this video...

Listen to the whole vid.. there's a few Journey songs done there.. country style...

From Journey, I hear To Be Alive Again, After All These Years, and from Cain's solo work I recognize Lose Myself in You. The arena rock market has really shifted to country these days and I can see why Cain would think it would be in his interest to explore it. "After All These Years" always struck me as country tune just waiting to be twangified.

Most of the 80's hair musicians, engineers and producers went to Nashville when grunge killed 80's music.. so it's no coincidence that New Country sounds like 80's rock..

It makes sense that Cain would demo his stuff this way.. he lives there and has a mulitmillion dollar studio there...

Clearly Nashville is where his future lies..
