He is a huge fan of SP, and his voice still sounds great. He says himself, though, that even if he had stayed with Journey, he would have gotten tired of singing the same songs after a few years. Can't blame him for that, but maybe he could have pushed the band to record new music. We'll never know.

They did new music in 2008 and 2011, though.

BUT....It's becoming silly to tour without a new album going on 5 years now.

I don't particularly care for nostalgia-only acts, but to say it's silly is ignoring how big their tours are now. They make a lot of bank. A lot. We may not like it, but it's far from silly if you are the one making the dough.

Not silly to them....no. Harder to support for me, though. They had balls reforming minus Perry AND recording new music on a regular basis. I don't really know what I'm supporting now?

The last Journey show I saw, and probably around my 15th overall, was about three years ago. They band looked lifeless, like assembly-line workers punching a clock. Definitely the most apathetic performance I have ever seen from them, perhaps any band. Jonathan looked like he just lost his puppy-dog. Afterward, I told my wife that this was my last Journey show. About one year later, they performed at a venue that was nearly in my backyard....only about a 25 minute drive away.....and I couldn't bring myself to go. Now that Steve Smith is back in the fold, I may reconsider, but I'm still on the fence.

Journey came in my city in summer '14, but I couldn't go since I started a new job literally the day of. The tour before that and the last Journey tour I saw was in 2011 and the sound system was absolute shit. I know they were having major problems that year with their system and it showed in the crowd and in their performance. Though, 2008-2009 was a magical year for the band once Arnel took over. I saw them 4 times and they put on energetic shows to sold out crowds going ballistic. I had a blast those 2 years. The band was HOT then so I'm glad I saw that.

Now, I'm just supporting the band for whatever comes next and don't expect it to reach those levels again until a farewell tour.

Because of Smith, I actually went online yesterday to buy my tickets. Prices were decent. Seats were decent. But I just could not press the buy button. I can't justify spending another evening listening to same formula, the same songs.

Journey needs to record a new Double CD of new material. Let Jon have control on one of them and Neal control on the other. Then everybody is happy! :D

To their defense, it's difficult. They have this big fan base out there that want to see them live, go experience a night out with friends, and hear some fun, familiar songs that sound close enough to the originals. They have a very small group of people (comparatively) that want to see them create new stuff, even even smaller group that would actual buy it if they did, and still smaller that are interested if it does not involve Perry. And of course, an even smaller group will pay for it vs buying one song or downloading the thing wholesale for free.

Not sure what it costs to record a double CD at the level Journey's at, but I think it would be hard to make the case, financially. I'm so thrilled these days when I can get anything new out of anyone.

So then you look at the live show. Why go see anyone over and over to see virtually the same show. Some can get away with it. Because it's more about the artist than the songs. For me, a Perry-fronted Journey could be about the artist. They could sing the phone book and it would feel good. I know it's just my opinion, but with other singers it's about the songs and hearing something different - which right now they are not offering. It doesn't feel like art anymore. As an example, I used to go see Melissa Etheridge a lot. I honestly did not care what songs were done because she herself was providing enough. Same was true for Kenny Loggins, though I have not seen him in a while (too much for tickets these days). In any case, I just don't feel like Journey is currently offering that.

So they get the Chicago crowd. Long satisfied with seeing the same show year after year. Some their fault, some not. At the very least, after all the years of paying their dues and hearing shit from the critics, it is paying off in a way that must offer some sense of satisfaction.

As far as artistry - Neal should ditch Journey and he and Steve should do an album together. Damn the sales. Damn the big tours. But I have never been one to pass up a better paying job for satisfaction, so why should they?

Why not release an EP online. Play 1 of the new songs each night. That's a reasonable balance.
