Journey should do these songs and then do non-dirty dozen songs for the remainder of the concert. They have so much material from their catalogue that they can keep the concerts fresh and exciting.

I would also definitely want Stone In Love in each show. But SIL wasn't really a hit to the extent of the other 8 songs that you named.

I would want all of the rest of the songs that they play each night to be non-hits.

Of the "dozen", they should drop BGTY and Escape. Both of these songs are very challenging to pull off vocally and have little in the way of rotation on classic rock radio.

I agree with this. Also, neither of these translate well live. Escape has a killer riffing guitar sound on the album, but anytime I hear it live it sounds muddy and washed up. Be Good to Yourself is only good in my book because of the awesome solo Neal laid down on the recording. Live he never comes close to matching that performance and plays it completely differently so much so that the song becomes very disappointing for me.

The Journey meat grinder is getting to Arnel. At times he is pretty much shouting the highs in this song. Watching other clips, it also seems that the band is also using more reverb on his voice than ever before. Still sounds very good for the most part, but 3:45-4:00 is brutal.

Lest we all forget, "Escape" was the opener of the '81 tour. And it rocked as a first song in the set. It bothers me where they play it now (usually middle to late in their act - after a string of ballads). Feels out of place. I'd like to see them open with it again; break into "Line of Fire," as they had on that tour... and then we're off and running. Separate Ways has overstayed its welcome in that first slot.

Their best opener in my opinion was Anyway You Want it...briefly at the end of an Augeri era tour. The lights came on just as the song began. It worked for me.

If you listen to the Houston Boots, the Japan one, or any live Journey from that era, the drums during the opening is so fitting for that particular song as a lead in, as opposed to the abrupt beginning of AWYWI - IMHO

I recently chatted w/ Smitty in New York at his art exhibit. He admitted he could not remember ANY of the songs or how he played them. Had to learn them all - all over again. It's part of the reason the set list will be limited this year, because they've only rehearsed a select few. But I too hope the "Where Were You" intro tour-de-force sees the light of day somewhere along the line.

I like what I've seen Smith do in the videos posted so far. He is playing the songs from a different approach, but it's a fresh approach and it highlights his capabilities. Plus, it probably keeps it fun for him as well. I guess time will tell if the band and the fans appreciate his new approach to the songs.
