Symphonic idea scrapped..?

Postby PianoMan1986 » Fri Oct 11, 2019 1:21 pm

Revisiting videos from the Hollywood Bowl show and thought it was a decent show and the arrangements sounded nice. I'm guessing it won't ever be released since Omar was on drums -- I'd buy it regardless. Around this time, I think Jon mentioned wanting to do something like this again, but in Europe.

Anyone else have interest, or doesn't matter at this point because the current dynamic (or lack of) of the band?

The recently released Foreigner symphony album sounds great. I would be interested. Better than nothing.

I've almost given up hope that anything that sounds compelling to us hardcore will happen (JTT, Symphonic show, new album, deep cuts). I can't believe how disinterested I've become in my favorite band since 2011 and Eclipse.

Rant warning to follow in various points

It's sad isn't it Eric? Being my favorite band too...I miss the days of the "Evening With..." show tours -- albeit the consequences that come with doing those longer shows/tours -- and the more enthusiasm across the stage during those years. Looking at you Mr. Cain -- quit looking like a grump on stage and dig back to find some of that 80's energy, or even the late 90's/early '00's.

I was very excited and hopeful for JTT and was more than willing to shell out money to see them had they played close enough to me because you had a band playing a variety from the catalog history with guys on stage who look like they're enjoying themselves and having a great time and it was about the music and sounded great without a huge production needed -- the animated album covers have been kind of a cool concept though on the recent tours.

Watching the symphonic videos again tonight and the only stretch is Mother, Father, but you can't fault Arnel on a song that he hasn't had to sing before, especially short-notice with Deen's departure from the lineup. There was a great blend sonically between the band and the symphony. Plus them doing Patiently, Winds of March, and Opened the Door.

I would be very surprised if they did a new album considering Eclipse was 2011 -- they should've cut another DVD in Europe on that tour as they played the most tracks from that album.

The Escape/Frontiers show would've been more favorable (subjective opinion) had they been able to do it with Deen still in the lineup. Don't get me wrong, it's cool to have 4/5 of the classic lineup of the band out there touring (can't seem to write and record together though, hmm) with Steve Smith, but I don't think people knew what to do or how to react having Travis in the performing lineup -- not that he's incapable with his contributions, but on paper it didn't make sense. Also, the fact they should've taken the time to re-record the performance for Troubled Child instead of omitting it altogether.

Random point -- Arnel's great and has sang his ass off for 13 years and fans should appreciate and admire that -- but there will always be that what if or wish that they had rolled forward with JSS -- the energy and (again) enthusiasm on the stage and changing up the set, he helped light a fire under their butts to be a rock band again to positive reviews.

As far as deep cuts...barring La Do Da...there's so much material to draw from, not expecting anything from the first 3 albums, but it would be nice to hear gems from Infinity through Raised on Radio, or Trial By Fire through Eclipse -- plenty of great tunes.

All right, enough rambling for now

As a fan, the only glimmer of hope I have is for 'Journey Through Time' to start up again once the residency is done. Creatively, the current band is pretty flaccid.

It seems Journey music died in 1986. c

Does neal have no balls at all? He is the one that always said he hates playing the dirty dozen. and now this is ALL they play.
I am sure the casual (and drunk) Vegas fans eat it up though.

I I really think JTT is never going to happen seeing that Journey is touring next year.

And when did Arnel start looking like Joan Jett?

I would say Journey hasn't been interesting since 2011.

I would have to agree with this, but that is IF JTT starts up again...

Journey at the Hollywood Bowl in 2015. I don't feel like scouring for interviews, but Jonathan Cain had interest in doing other symphonic shows instead of just that one off performance.

I blame John Baruck on what the band plays or how they're deals are made with promoters and venues, or should we be looking at Azoff?
I'm thinking you're right regarding JTT with what's planned for next year.

That's a decent setlist -- could do with a different encore song though

Playing a set beyond the dirty dozen would require the band getting into a room together and rehearsing. I think we know they're incapable of doing that these days, with their relationships in tatters.

Travis should be singing 2-3 songs a night. He's not Deen Castronovo-caliber, but he is good and AP needs a break.

Here's vid of Travis doing IBAWY. Is this the first time Smitty has played on it?

Only JSS did this song justice (Besides the original :) )

Sorry, but that country twang in Travis' vocals just doesnt fit right with Journey.

Kind of like that new Nashville kid who is the lead singer for Survivor Ugh!

Its funny that they are STILL doing the same old dusty outro since 1986 ROR tour.

Pretty sure this will get dropped, seeing the people heading towards the beer and biffys in this video.

I agree with you on the JSS performance(s) as he had a great command of the song and stage.

For some reason I thought Travis was from Nashville, instead of New Orleans as Jon introduced him. As far as the Frankie Sullivan Band...er...Survivor, the guy singing for them now is basically a hired gun...not a bad singer and what little I've heard has the range, but no similarities to Dave or Jimi.

I don't have any issue with the outro on the song, but have they ever done it a different way? Suggestions to make it different?

Hopefully it doesn't get dropped because of that -- for the band's sake and for the fans put it on a rotation of songs for the shows.

I don't necessarily hear a twang in Travis' vocals, but I'm still not sure how I feel about his singing -- to my ears, he's on key, not trying to carbon-copy and puts his own subtle nuances on the performances...maybe it's just the whole, "Okay, you're going to sing this song or these songs during the show and that is it" and there's no invested connection. :|

I will say that even though it may not be a demanding part, I like how Smith started the song and his feel in the performance of the tune.

Wow. I did not like that at all. 1/3 through it was bugging the shit out of me. Like a whine.

He sounds a lot like Mick Hucknall of Simply Red. A nice, soulful voice, but lacking the powerful range needed for most Journey songs.

I like the album outro a lot. The vocals in the concert version cover one of my favorite solos.

Thought the Travis version of IBAWY was surprisingly good. Went into it thinking I would hate, but I enjoyed it. One of my fave Journey tunes too, so I'm a discerning critic when it comes to live performances of it.
