The first link is to the 1977-1978 demo and the second link is to the 1994 FTLOSM era rerecording.

You formally trained singers and musicians, can you tell me what the vocally technical difference is between these two recordings? Obviously the '94 version is considerably raspier, but is it in a lower key/octave?

There's certainly a difference in his timber. Both versions are great, of course I wouldn't expect him to have the range of even 1994 these days for obvious reasons.
