Other than Herbie saying Valory didn’t improve his playing temporarily, I’ve never read/heard anyone from Journey say anything negative about each other’s abilities… at least there’s that.
1) I thought there was a bit of a blowup about Marco where Neal said he was playing over him and could not play the songs right in concert, or whatever...and eventually fired him.
2) Then there were Perry complaints that Steve Smith could not play like a drum machine, or whatever, and fired him for ROR. The same with Ross. Steve Smith felt insulted by those comments for years but found he had to learn to play like that to be a good studio musician...and took that approach for TBF.
3) Herbie also talked at length about Perry's voice changing after Escape...with a huge complaint about Perry's list of changes for the Bill Graham tribute, dropping everything by two full steps and Neal and Jonathan having to rewrite the music. And, Perry required somebody to get him the lyrics to Faithfully and Lights because he was not sure of what they were.
Also, Herbie did not just say Ross didn't improve temporarily but something like, "You have been in this band for five years but your skills have not changed since day one. You would think a professional musician would seek to improve himself." What I read was more insulting like that, not a casual comment like you said.
1) You're right, but he played 2 shows and Schon also prefaced it with he was a great player BUT....
2) That is a good point.
3) I do recall that, but a 3 song set in the middle of the Journey abyss wasn't representative of his feelings about Perry's voice.
4) Yeah, it was insulting, but he followed it up with something about him improving over time and was a better bass player at that current time.
I was more coming from a POV where even with all the personal negativity and drama I've never heard Perry, Cain or Schon be anything but complimentary of their musicianship. And while either Augeri or Schon revealed how Schon wanted him to sing harder, I've never heard anything negative about Arnel?
