Surprising Journey Songs On The Radio

Postby Journey/Survivor » Fri Sep 22, 2023 4:18 pm

What are some Journey songs that you've heard on the radio that you were a little surprised to hear on the radio?

Not that it's shocking or anything, but on Thursday I was at a dentist appointment and "Ask The Lonely" was played on the station that was playing in the office. I hadn't heard it on the radio ever since the mid 80s.

I was hearing After the Fall pretty regularly for a while on the 80's on 8 Sirius XM station. I know it's not terrestrial radio, but it still caught me off guard the first few times.

Funny thing is that a few days ago I was looking at where all of Journey's songs charted on Billboard. I have known for a long time that Walks Like A Lady peaked at #32. But when I saw that listed again I thought to myself that I don't think that I had ever heard it on the radio even back in 1980? Of course I was only 8 years old at the time and was only barely listening to Rock music at the time. It wasn't until 1981 that I started listening to a lot of Rock music.

Wasn't on the radio, but several years back I was walking through a department store with the wife and "Someday Soon" was playing in the background throughout the store. I don't think I've been as surprised to hear something as I was that day.

For rock blocks on a local classic rock station it wasn't uncommon for one of the tracks to be "City of the Angels". And this same channel was one of the few in the country to regularly spin "Higher Place" and "Can't Tame a Lion".

And a mix type of channel here used to occasionally play "Party's Over".

98.5 WNCX in Cleveland sometimes plays City Of The Angels along with LTS. I also heard Can't Tame The Lion on the WNCX back when it was a single, but I have never heard it on the radio since then.

I've heard The Party's Over on the radio, but I have never heard Higher Place on the radio.

Local St Louis rock station KSHE-95 has played and still plays a lot of Journey. Don't listen to them much anymore, but I do recall them playing "Chain Reaction" occasionally and "The Party's Over". I think I heard them play Edge of the Blade as well, but that was years and years ago.

If you want to go back years and years..

I remember hearing "Feeling That Way"/"Anytime" from Captured often on the radio, "The Party's Over" and "Lights"/"Stay Awhile" once in a while. Way back then, I heard them play the entire Departure album. And, back during DeTour they played the entire Red 13 EP/CD. I heard the studio versions of "Feeling That Way"/"Anytime", "Just the Same Way" often. Once in a while I would hear the soundtrack songs. LTS was always followed by "City of the Angels". Back when the box set was released, I heard "Into Your Arms" and they said it was "the new Journey song". But, things changed after they were bought out by Big Radio...now it is just the few standard songs and hardly anything else. I doubt they have as much freedom to play what they want and have to stick to a standard approved play list...they even fired the morning crew which had its roots going back to the late 70's in favor of "Bob and Tom", which I hate...much rather hear local stuff from local people. But, whatever.

I think the most surprising thing I have heard on the radio was years ago when I was in NC and heard LTS without "City of the Angels"...I was completely surprised...it was the first time I had ever heard it on its own. Nowadays, it happens all the time. I think radio just plays the GH CD and doesn't bother pulling out Evolution, Infinity Departure, or even Escape. If it's not on GH, they don't play it. I bet some people out there have never heard LTS with CotA following it and it used to be standard, at least that is how I always heard it up until maybe 15yrs ago.

If you are talking outside of Journey, I remember hearing "Amanda" by Boston a couple years before Third Stage was released. It got leaked somehow and the radio station played it often, until they got in trouble :) But, it was seriously YEARS prior to Third Stage...I remember the DJ guy making a joke about it saying something about "hears an old Boston song..." and playing the newly released Amanda.

98.5 WNCX, a Classic Rock radio station in Cleveland still play these songs on a regular or fairly regular basis...

Lights
Feeling That Way/Anytime
Wheel In The Sky
Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'/City Of The Angels
Just The Same Way
Any Way You Want It
Don't Stop Believin'
Who's Crying Now
Separate Ways

They play Lights, Wheel In The Sky and Don't Stop Believin' a lot.

They played Message Of Love a lot when the single was first released to radio. And they played Can't Tame The Lion a little bit when it was released as a single. But they don't play them anymore.

Back in the early 1980's, I heard When You're Alone It Ain't Easy all the time on the radio. Where Were You was on the radio all the time also. The rarest song I ever heard just once on the radio was Spaceman. Now, that shocked me!

There's a college in Berea Ohio (Suburb of Cleveland) that back in the 1980s had a low frequency radio station that played Progressive Rock. They used to play Kohoutek, Topaz, Mystery Mountain and other songs from Journey's first 3 albums.

This past Thursday I was at the post office and Any Way You Want It came on on the radio while I was in there. It was 98.5 WNCX that was playing the song.

When I'm in m car I mostly listen to sports talk radio. So most of the time when I hear Journey on the radio it's because I'm in a dentist office, the post office, a grocery store or Walmart or some store like that.

I remember hearing "After All These Years" on the grocery store radio shortly after it was released.

Listening to Classic Rewind on SiriusXM tonight and I got to hear Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’ followed by City of the Angels. It’s been a long time.

Speaking of Sirius XM, every so often Journey pops up on the The Beatles Channel, SXM18.
"It's All Too Much" from Look Into The Future was a Beatles/George Harrison cover.
