Greatest Hits Remastered 2024

.
@StevePerryMusic spent the last year remastering @JourneyOfficial's greatest hits album – and you can finally enjoy the fruits of that labor. The 2LP 12-inch 180-gram vinyl edition and new HD digital files are available now. 'Greatest Hits' was originally issued in November 1988 and quickly became the best-selling Journey album ever, remaining on the Billboard 200 for an astonishing 786 weeks.
Nick DeRiso
@DerisoNick

Steve Perry's official statement from this morning: "When Sony contacted John Jackson and me to oversee the remastering of the original analog tapes from flat masters to 192K HD, I was very excited to revisit them once again. We contacted Adam Ayan at Gateway Mastering and the process began. Because of the many different studios and many years between all these recordings, it took almost one year to complete. As it was nearing completion, I realized that – sonically and musically – this was not just another compilation, but was turning into a classic-sounding new LP. This was my hope for these recordings made from a time when we were at our best. All original accompanying music videos, released in the same timeline, were visually upgraded to HD as well. Please enjoy these timeless performances."

Will this also be in CD format?

If I'm buying new remasters I'm getting it on CD not a vinyl.

Vinyl can be cool strictly from a collection standpoint. But CD's are clearly superior from an audio perspective.

It's really a turn-off that Neal, Jon etc. have no input.

Perry is not an original member of Journey. He has claimed that he never felt like he was part of the band. But he gets to call all of the shots in many ways all of these years after leaving the band. It's ridiculous.

Based on past comments, I think Neal and Jon are happy to have Steve work on it and they don't want to focus on past releases. I think the Only the Young thing a couple months back was not the greatest idea, but Perry helping in the remaster of stuff seems fine. Plus, I don't think Neal has the skills to remaster things. It's more Perry's wheelhouse. Not to mention it's in the hands of someone that seems to care a great deal for that body of work.

Why not put out something new? How many times has this album been remastered?

I don't really understand the need for anther release, but I agree with your points on this. Listen to the mix on Freedom. Does anyone want those sticky fingers on this?

I don't know all of the technical stuff, but sounds to me like it was reengineered to sound as if all of the tracks were recorded under the same circumstances (studio, sound, mixing, etc.). If that's the case, yeah this is a cool idea. And I'd imagine that taking some time to accomplish correctly.

As far as the argument about him not being an original member. And? All of the tracks are from the time when he was the lead singer of the band. Don't understand what you are arguing there.

It seems to me that the rest of the writers sold their publishing rights...not sure if Perry did. I think Sony owns the master tapes. So, if Sony wants to do it, they do not need to involve Neal and Jon, and maybe if they allow Perry to produce he gives his permission.

They should have released this for the anniversary...and called it "Greatest Hits - 50th Anniversary Remaster". That would have sold a bit better...and given a real reason to release it. As it is now, "meh."

I'm sure they'd be more than happy to at least be consulted.

Honestly, yes, I would prefer Bob Clearmountain to re-master the Greatest Hits. Not his fault Freedom sounds shitty in spots.

Consulted about what?

They were consulted about GH2, but that was a whole new lineup of songs. Here, nothing changed except sonically. Who's to say they weren't consulted?

That is correct, Neal & Jon sold their rights several years ago which is probably why they aren't interested in doing any special releases from that era. Perry still owns his rights and still oversees the catalog. Instead of spending a year to remaster the Greatest Hits why not spend the time doing something nice for Frontiers 40th?

Look at the sales of the Greatest Hits and look at the sales for Frontiers. That's the answer. The GH release is their premium top seller.

Any tinkering of these classic records should not be done unilaterally. Sorry.

I don't recall that and I find it hard to believe that Neal would sign off on including "Baby I'm A Leavin You" as a hit.

I remember Steve said he submitted the proposed track listing for GH2 to the guys and that the only change was that Neal wanted Little Girl added.

Perry shouldn't be in charge of making the track listing in the first place. I doubt Neal and Jon even have veto power. Like the post-TBF breakup agreement, Perry has them by the balls.

I was going to say the same thing. I also thought Neal mentioned somewhere that he and Jonathan were asked for song lists, which they gave. They got this list back and the only change was "Little Girl"...But, this was a very long time ago and I could be wrong...I never cared much about GH2 or GHLive. Both are flawed, IMO, and I never bought either one.

For those of you complaining about the 2024 Remaster of GH, it sounds gorgeous! These mixes seem to have more depth and less noise. Perry always makes sure that sonically the stuff he releases is top notch. Traces was amazing sonically and he and the team did an amazing job on the remaster.

You may say it was not necessary, but now that its done, I hope you can at least enjoy it and recognize it for the great work it is.
