The Next Steve Perry Solo Tour

Postby JourneyHard » Wed Aug 14, 2024 8:26 am

Here is what I found on local classic rock station web site: "Recently, Steve Perry signed up for a record label. ( He won’t mention which one yet.) He is now hinting at a return to concert for a solo tour in 30 years. Steve last performed a full-length concert in 1987 with old bandmates Journey."

Yes. Steve Perry plans a solo tour in 30 years. Mark it down. Save up your money for the 2054 Steve Perry Tour!

This (old) news broke in May. As for touring....yea, sure.

I guess the FTOSM tour did not happen.

This is also old news...it is in the Perry forum somewhere.

I would love to see it but I’ve heard this countless times over the years only to be disappointed so I’ll believe it when I see tour dates posted.

It makes no sense . He's just saying that again. There won't be one show.

This was the weirdest part of his return with Traces, the fact that he made a pretty extensive media interview tour and to my knowledge listening/watching those interviews FTLOSM got zero recognition. His new narrative is that he'd been out of the music spotlight since '87 but in the age of the internet and a performer's history being right there at everyone's fingertips that kind of thing doesn't fly nowadays. Its a shame since that album and tour deserve a bit more recognition.

And don't get me started on the unreleased "Against the Wall" album.

He should have toured when he released Traces but he didn't so I'm not holding my breath for even one song.

I doubt he is going to tour.

What I would like to see is maybe a Vegas residency where a few aging singers like Perry can share the stage for a just a few songs each. Maybe Perry, Dennis DeYoung, Rik Emmett, etc...just give them the stage to do whatever they want for 45mins each. I could see that happening maybe once per week and Perry able to do it.

We all know what needs to happen. Steve and Jon had an unrivaled writing chemistry. It doesn't even have to be Journey. Trev needs to get these guys together and they will come up with something incredible and beautiful.

The only thing that I could see possibly happening would be a storyteller situation, like what he did when he appeared with the Eels.
Sharing stories, singing abbreviated portions of the more challenging songs if needed. Easy and manageable. And the most realistic situation at this point.
Doubt this would even happen, but if it did I'd be ok with it.

Based on everything we know about Perry's side of things, I doubt he wants anything to do with Cain on any level. I get the feeling that the phone conversation back in '98 between the two of them is still a point of contention for Perry. In Jon's book he basically said it ended along the lines of Perry telling him to "lose his number" though I'm pretty sure the language was a bit harsher. Also, outside of Steve's speech at the HOF induction I don't recall seeing any kind of reconnecting between them like old friends reuniting as opposed to the hug-a-thon that was going on with Neal. At least that garnered the whole ill-fated "cup of coffee" thing.

I think it is simpler than that. It seems to me that Perry simply does not want to work with anybody involved with Journey ever again. That stone has been cracked.

I'm inclined to agree with you....even if it wasn't bad blood from the old days, they aren't exactly a beacon of healthy business practices nowadays, I'm sure damn near everyone is leary of working with them at this point.

A quick side bar here regarding Cain's writing. Not sure if it's been mentioned on this board or not, but there is a documentary that came out in 2020 that I just recently watched called "It All Begins With A Song" about the song writing industry in Nashville. Cain is featured in it somewhat. He talks about the writing of DSB and a few others, and they play a short vid of the band playing live. The doc is primarily focused on country songs, and the people behind the writing of the songs that live and work in Nashville. They do get into a few other genres as well. Really well done. Anyone that really likes to learn how the song writing and publishing process works would enjoy it. Amazon Prime.

I agree that Trev could be the mediator to make something like that work. He seems to have a great relationship with Perry. But the other side of that is all the legal stuff going on, not sure if I'm Perry I'd want to come anywhere near that drama. I have no idea how to read Cain anymore.

Not that I think for a moment that it will ever happen. I'm certain that it won't happen. But hypothetically, Schon and Cain could write the music for a song together. And then Perry and Cain could write the lyrics together. Schon and Perry wouldn't ever have to be in the same room.

But as has been mentioned, Perry seems to resent Cain over Perry's firing from the band.

He did the first leg of the ROR tour 38 years ago and part of his solo tour 30 years ago. I'm not expecting much.
