Perry Final Show -30 years ago today .

Postby JohnH » Sun Mar 23, 2025 2:24 pm

Steve Perry played his final full concert 30 years ago today - March 22, 1995. He appeared unannounced with The Eels on a few songs in 2014, but 1995 was the last time it was possible to buy tickets to a full scheduled concert.

And that will still stand as the final show too, Perry will play his next full show when pigs fly.

I can't believe it's almost 11 years since The Eels shows. What a waste of a great talent. It's sad that he hasnt felt capable at any point to at least be able to do a couple of stripped back shows.

Good lord, people are still talking about Steve Perry performing? He’s 76 years old for god’s sake.

Eh, I was just watching a Lionel Ritchie concert filmed in Philly this week. He's 75.

For a myriad of reasons, Perry lost the hunger sometime after Frontiers and ROR. There's clearly more going on than just his age.

Johnny Mathis just hung it up this week and he's 89!

I agree. There's something else going on here. Perry could tour with a bunch of other classic rock singers. He could sing eight songs or whatever, but he is having too much fun eating ice cream.

Guys… Steve Perry hasn’t performed live in almost 30 years.

You can’t just go up and sing again after 30 years, especially at 76 years old.

The people you’re mentioning here have been performing consistently their entire adult lives.

Perry retired around the age of 50. That was a long, long time ago.

It’s like expecting Michael Jordan to come back and play for the Bulls.

Thanks for the comments Jeremey and everyone . That was pretty much the point of my post. Since it's now at 30 years , there certainly won't be any more concerts . And the people that shout on FB and elsewhere " Bring back Steve!" Are living in some kind of alternate reality world. The songs would have to be tuned down so many whole steps they would be unrecognizable.

Steve is smart , he must have known he was at the end of being able to do a good job , so he quit on top, instead of embarrassing himself. His legacy is intact.

Sadly, there are a lot of people who would rather have the corpse of Steve Perry on stage with Journey as the singer than anyone else.

YouTube is loaded with ignorant people who still make comments about Journey not being Journey without Steve Perry and other bullshit like that. Journey were a band before Steve Perry. And they're still Journey way after Perry.

Perry can't pull off a tour at this point in his life.

Right? If Perry pulled a Frankie Valli and just lipped synced to 1994-5 recordings , there still would be people that would think he " sounds great! " For as many people that aren't fooled by a 90 year man that perpetually sounds like 1997, there are still others that think that Frankie Valli is singing great. There's a fool born every minute.

That's the state of the world right now. Endless morons who believe every fake thing that they hear on their TV.

If people love hearing fake things all they have to do is turn on TV "news" every day.

There are countless people who don't know what they don't know!

No, but you can prepare for it and get in shape to do it. I have no doubt SP prepared for those brief Eels appearances and he sounded basically as I expected. Given his age and extended hiatus, I thought it was good.

At the end of the day, if he wanted to be on stage, he'd be there. Lou Gramm is back on the road with Foreigner as guest vocalist. He survived a brain tumor and has been working on his voice every year. What's Perry's excuse again?

I don't have any expectations from Perry. I am not going to make excuses for him either.

Well, anybody who can "talk" can sing...anybody, at any age, at any time, with or without preparation. That doesn't mean they will sing in a way that people want to hear, or that people will pay money to hear.

No, Jordan would not be accepted into the NBA. But, if there was a "senior" league, he could. Who would not pay money to see Jordan, and all those guys from back then? Maybe have a 3pt contest at halftime so Bird could show off. It would be a lot of fun.

But, Perry would not even do that. There was talk of Perry touring with Dennis DeYoung. Dennis even mentioned it. But, Perry turned it down. The problem isn't that he "can't sing"...nobody would ever expect him to sing like it was 1983. The problem is he doesn't want to.

If you think back to after ROR, he had to scrap the entire 'Against the Wall" album because Sony did not like it. Then Sony made a deal with him to release a third single from FTLOSM if he would agree to rejoin Journey. Well, Sony did release it but did NO promotion for it. Then the entire Journey stone was cracked. Then add on top of that, his breakup with Sherry, his mother being sick and dying, all of the "my face entering the atmosphere" stuff that he always went on about. Go listen to the Dan Rather interview. He simply lost interest in singing at all. I think he lost interest in the professional side because of all of the business shit from ROR through TBF. He said that it he did not want it to be the only thing that sustained him...so he let it go and it became more of a "hobby" than a profession. Then Kelly Nash came along and seemed to have the same affect on him as his mother did...and sorta convinced him to start singing again and not stop this time. But, he has done it on his terms...not the fans terms, not a record label's terms, and not a bands terms...his. If his desire is to release another Christmas album, he will. If his desire is to release an R&B covers album, he will. If he desires to guest with a band and perform a few songs, he will. He does what HE wants to do. Right now, he does not want to perform live. Accept it.

That is where he is in life....and I have no critique over it.

I agree that Perry doesn't want to tour. If he wanted to do it, he would do it. He could get in shape in six months. By October, he would be good to go. But it won't happen because he has no desire to do it. He is a shy person. Maybe he doesn't want to be in front of an audience anymore.
He claims he cannot stand for over an hour, but he could do it easily. Start concert with No Erasin', Stone In Love, Who's Cryin' Now, (Let the band jam for 15 minutes at the end of that song while Perry sits down off stage and rests), Separate Ways, Send Her My Love, Be Good To Yourself, (Let the band jam for 15 minutes at the end of that song while Perry sits down off stage and rests), Only The Young, Lights, I'll Be Alright Without You, (Let the band jam for 15 minutes at the end of that song while Perry sits down off stage and rests), Wheel In the Sky, Open Arms, Lovn Touchn Squeezn, (Let the band jam for 15 minutes at the end of that song while Perry sits down off stage and rests), When You Love A Woman, Girl Can't Help It, Any Way You Want It, (Let the audience cheer for an encore for 15 minutes), Oh Sherrie, Faithfully, Don't Stop Beleivin.
That could be the best concert ever. But it won't happen because Perry won't do it.

Pete Townshend (79 years old) just had knee surgery and he is excited to get back touring. Steve Perry could tour if he wanted, but he doesn't want to tour.

To fair, there’s a big difference between Pete standing on stage playing a guitar and Steve trying to pull off some of most vocally demanding songs in music for a full set at his age. Arnel is 20 years younger and he struggles at times.

Never have I ever…attended any of the Perry shows! But didn’t he say, I do believe; he gave a head’s up of 10 years! Such a big THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS of a job well done. And if he ever cause I never say never; I’d appear!
