I'm going to put together a Journey book...

Postby Andrew » Mon Jun 16, 2025 7:51 pm

I'd say 'write a Journey book', but that's not true as such.

I'm going top put out a book featuring all the Journey news, interviews and reviews from my years running MR. Plus a new foreword and additional post-fact commentary, plus whatever else ideas I come up with

But I thought it would be cool to put some of the funniest/most bizarre posts from this very forum in there. Not the abusive or inflammatory stuff...but some of the genuinely funny stuff if anyone has any particular memories and can locate such things amongst the decades of crap here :)

Ed or Deano or others used to post Journey celebrity look-alikes (ex. Willem Dafoe as Ross, Jack Nicholson as Neal). Those threads were always worth a laugh.

Deano's posts about playing basketball with JSS or getting on the tour bus should be documented. I have often given thought about documenting the origins of Tapegate in some fashion. Maybe a novella.

I don't know if this will fit into what you want for your book or not? But I always wished that there would be a book that quoted musicians from bands other than Journey where they express their admiration for the talent of Journey's band members.

For example, quote Steve Lukather expressing his opinions on Neal Schon's guitar playing, or on Jonathan Cain's keyboard playing and song writing, etc, etc.

I unfortunately do not have the magazine, but back in the very late 1980s there was one of these Rock magazines that was asking Dave Murry and Steve Harris from Iron Maiden their opinions on different bands. They were asked about Journey, and they both said great things about Journey. They mentioned how they consider Journey's first album to be one of the greatest albums ever made. They mentioned that before one of Iron Maiden's concerts in the late 80s they were playing Journey songs over the PA and that their fans were yelling stuff like that Journey sucks. But they then said that they couldn't understand why their own fans would say that Journey sucks, and that they consider Journey to be a great band and that if Bruce Dickinson could sing songs like Open Arms that they would record songs like that themselves.

Jimi Jamison and Jim Peterik have expressed their admiration for Journey's music and the talents of the members of Journey.

Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis have often been quoted on their admiration of Schon and Journey as well.

Paul Rodgers and plenty of others too.

Didn't Randy Rhoads once say to NS that he liked Stone In Love?

I had never heard that. But you may be right?

I know that Billy Gibbons said that Schon's guitar solo in Walks Like A Lady was one of his favorite solos by another guitarist.

Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Ted Nugent, Paul Gilbert are some of the other musicians that I know have said great things about Schon's guitar playing that I didn't mention in my other post.

There has to be a chapter about Deano. Maybe many chapters! Miss that guy!

Just my thoughts on this, after thinking about it off and on for a while now...

It seems this is less a "Journey" book and more your "Journey experience". Meaning, it is not about the history of Journey or new facts about Journey, or things like this. It is more about your interactions with Journey and their fandom. So, that makes it a bit unique.

In my opinion, I would include a long chapter, or maybe two shorter chapters, that talks about your experience with Journey fandom. Write about how the fanbase reacted to various events, like after TBF, the hiring of Augeri, the releases of the various albums, the firing of Augeri and hiring JSS and his firing and the hiring of Arnel...the band "events" and how fans reacted. Then get into some fandom specific things, like; PerryHeads/Loons vs Journey fans, "Tapegate", the "forum wars", BT refugees showing up here and maybe their hazing, maybe talk about the craziness of Joe and how you had to deal with him, the times you shut down the forum and why. I'm not sure I would get into specific posts because so many of those posts had their roots in insulting or demeaning other people (ie: the treatment of Rich, or posting pics of BT girls and making fun of their looks, etc.) I'm not sure I would have a chapter specifically for Dean because his history could be included in the telling of the history of the forum and your experience with it. I would try to talk to Lulu about it before writing about Dean, maybe have her read it before you add it to the book...just so it is not a surprise and to ensure she is OK with it....maybe do the same for other people, too...just to be safe. These could maybe be two chapters and split between "band events" and "fans gone crazy" :). I suppose there could be a third chapter if you have anything outside of the forum that relates to fans that you could talk about...maybe fan meetups or something, I don't know. I think it should be about YOUR perspective on things because it is unique compared to forum members...don't try to tell our story on the forum, tell us YOUR story about the forums and YOUR thoughts and feelings as the forum owner about what was happening. In other words try not to say things like, "....this caused the fans to feel..." Instead say something like "...as I read how the fans responded, I felt....." That is something we really do not know or completely understand...so it is new.

Anyway, that is my thoughts on things.

That’s the angle I’d already planned Monker. Not interested in writing a new history of. Much of it will be material already published online here/MR.
