I was trying to put myself in Steve Perry's shoes and reflect on his life. First, he was with this band and they were about to get their big break when there was an accident and the bassist was killed. Next, he joins Journey and he is writing Patiently with Neal Schon, but Perry wants it to be a beautiful heartfelt song, but Neal inserts a hard rock part. He probably went to Herbie Herbert to complain, but I can picture Herbie saying, "Let me hear what you got." And Herbie loved the song the way Neal had it. I know that had to hurt Perry to his core. The songs he writes are like his babies. Maybe none of this happened, but I could see Perry wanting the songs one way and either other band members or management or the record label telling him to change the songs. All of that would be torture.
