New sound clips up. Thoughts?

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Wed Jul 06, 2005 8:54 pm

"Butterfly" reminds me of "Kiss Me Softly", in the way Augeri is doing more reading than actual singing. Also, the way he is speaking the words in his sultry, low range is very redolent of "Kiss Me Softly". I don't particularly care for "Kiss Me Softly", not sure about this one either. Time will tell.

The repeating keyboard part on "Believe" is very catchy, if a tad on the simplistic side. Song fits Steve's voice well, that much is evident from the clip. He always excels at the soulful stuff. In fact, his delivery here reminds me of the Tyketto song, "Jamie". Steve just sounds very natural and at ease here.

So far, I think "Butterfly" is the most non-Journey sounding song yet on this album.

Then again, I have yet to hear Ross Valory's western melodic opus.

I like both but Butterfly does sound a lot like Kiss Me Softly. Believe is different and I think I am digging it.

So far the only clip I don't like is "Every Generation", which I might actually hate....

First off, when did Perry join "Queer Eye"? That pic says it all about his priorities...

I like all three songs. Butterfly needs a few more spins for me to cast my deciding vote on it.

I really like the Ross tune (I have the CD). The guitar reminds me of Dead or Alive, but overall it sounds like a ZZTop song. Very cool.

Having the CD, I can say that I really like "Butterfly". I do not compare it to "Kiss Me Softly", which I thought was one of the better moments on Arrival (because it was Steve, not some attempt to sound like Perry). But I can understand why it would feel the same...they are both very Steve.

"Believe", on the other hand, is not one of my top choices on this CD. It is good, but not as good as the others in my mind.

Funny thing about music, how subjective it is. I dig "Gone Crazy" with Ross' vocals. His voice is nothing special, but it fits the vibe of the song. I love the return to an all out bluesy rocker. Great energy.

And I really dig "Every Generation"! It has a completely retro 70's sound going for it. Love the lyrics and it just oozes 'cool' to me.

The one song that I don't "love" is "Better Together". To me it sounds like a throw-away from "Arrival". Too much of a step back to the wrong thing.
The other song that doesn't work for me on the CD as a whole, is "In Self Defense". I love the song, but Journey didn't really bring anything new to it. If you are going to remake a song, bring something new and fresh and different to it! Make it Journey (which it almost was already but...) Make it stand out. I am sure, for those who were not familiar with the song, it is a good song on "Generations". But for those of us who already knew the song.....

I think this is why "Generations" AND Journey are so good! They bring so many different things to the table that affect everyone differently. There are so many influences, and so much talent, in the band that there is something for everyone to appreciate.

Sings "Gone Crazy," dude. No clips available to my knowledge.

I'll be avoiding that song, "Gone Crazy." Sounds like a clunker to me.

I don't know about 'smart' or 'educated' but he is sly and sneaky. He is also transparant if you have been around for a while.

I like both the new samples although I would say Butterfly is my least fave. Sounds the most Tall Stories of all the tracks to me. But Steve does sound good.

Still waiting to hear Ross!

LOL... boy as they say, opinions are varied...

Totally agree with you here -- "Butterfly" is incredible. I got to chat briefly with Steve last weekend and he said that this song is really hard for him to sing because he's very emotional about it. It's a haunting image created and the vocal is strong IMO

"Believe", on the other hand, is not one of my top choices on this CD. It is good, but not as good as the others in my mind.

Where as it *is* one of mine. I find it very catchy and, being a total word junkie, I love the message!

Funny thing about music, how subjective it is. I dig "Gone Crazy" with Ross' vocals. His voice is nothing special, but it fits the vibe of the song. I love the return to an all out bluesy rocker. Great energy.

Agreed. Ross's sense of humor totally shines through this one, but I can see how some people really won't 'get it' -- it's the least Journey-like tune.

And I really dig "Every Generation"! It has a completely retro 70's sound going for it. Love the lyrics and it just oozes 'cool' to me.

And it's great live!

The one song that I don't "love" is "Better Together". To me it sounds like a throw-away from "Arrival". Too much of a step back to the wrong thing.

Another one we disagree on -- I can't stop bopping along to this tune. It's just catchy and fun!

The other song that doesn't work for me on the CD as a whole, is "In Self Defense". I love the song, but Journey didn't really bring anything new to it. If you are going to remake a song, bring something new and fresh and different to it! Make it Journey (which it almost was already but...) Make it stand out. I'm not loving this one. While I *have* Schon & Hammer, I don't listen to it much so this isn't a hugely familiar tune for me. I keep trying to get into it, but after as much play as Generations has gotten in my house the last week or so, I've found myself hitting skip when this comes up.

I think this is why "Generations" AND Journey are so good! They bring so many different things to the table that affect everyone differently. There are so many influences, and so much talent, in the band that there is something for everyone to appreciate.

Yup! There's an interesting variety on this CD and that's what's making it so enjoyable to me. While I love Arrival, there is a certain "sameness" to it -- they stuck very closely with a familiar formula. They allowed themselves to take a few side trips along other paths for Generations and I think the result is fantastic!

That, to me, is the biggest "return" to the Infinity/Evolution/Departure days...and that is what I LOVE about this CD!
