What are you guys rating higher, Never Too Late or A Better Life?

After dozens of listens I'm still going w/ A Better Life... it's moody, it's atmospheric. It paces itself well, amazing repetitive urgent rythym work by Schon and a killer, killer lead vocal. Perfect hybrid of Augeri and Perry. It's a sin for a band to have 2 singers this good and I want every successive record to have 1 Deen vocal, ala Keith Richards when he gets his 1-2 every album.
A Better Life carries the day at this time....

Some people say the Deen tracks exemplify the vintage 80's Journey sound that the band specializes in and should strive to always produce. Others feel it sounds too dated and it is a type of sound Journey is better off leaving behind in the past.
For me, the Deen-sung tracks are melodious high points in a sea of too much grating modern-ish hard rockin.
I like both.

Where would Pride of the Family fit in for you guys if it were on the album? I dont like ABL, and I'm not a fan of Pride either. Never too Late is a good song, dated or not. It's my pick.

I've said before, TPOTF would fit in swimmingly with the mixed bag that is Generations.

It is not part of the Sanctuary release because US bands almost always kowtow to the demands of the goddam japanese labels (middle finger for you, king records) who demand earlier release dates and exclusive tracks and extort the US buyer who's desparate (stupid) enough to buy their product. I still tip a beer to Frontiers in Italy for not pulling that crap with NTL when Sanctuary asked for a bone.

TPOTF and NTL should;ve been available to the Sanctuary buyer.

I've got the Sanctuary release, it has NTL.

I think it was originally scheduled to NOT be on the US release then was ultimately.

Yes.
It does have NTL. Sanc. asked and Frontiers played ball. Note to King: I stole POTF anyway.

No they shouldn't have.
Journey mngmt promised those tracks exclusively to foreign distributors. Then they tried to renege on that arrangement by making those tracks also available to US buyers.
That's not how you conduct business.
If anything, Neal should've followed thru on his empty promise of adding new materal to the album.
Then again, it prolly wouldn't have made any difference in album sales so why bother?

Interesting. I assumed that Sanctuary wasn't going to add NTL because they weren't too happy with the mix. Hence the remix.

I thought NTL sounded dated when I first heard it, but I like it now, though I prefer A Better Life.

I like both Deen tracks and if Journey is to ever release another studio album, they had better have more lead vox from Deen C! To be honest, I wouldn't mind having half Augeri, half Deen album. 5 songs a piece.

I personally prefer ABL, I agree with NIG, NTL sounds dated.

If Journey does ever release a new album, I'd like to see more duets between Steve and Deen more than Deen singing solo on anyone song. Now that would be cool. 8)

I wouldn't laugh at that.....it's close, but I still think ABL takes it.

Neal and also Deen's drums even more than his vocals rule the day on Never Too Late. How about when he goes way up to nail that "TO CCCHHHAAAAANNNNGGGGEEEEE!!!!"

No, No, No...
Deen can have ONE song. That would be cool. But this still needs to be Steve fronting the band.
As for duets, I think Deen and Steve's voices are too similar to make a duet effective. Jon and Steve could do a duet...but just one! Get back to Steve being the voice of Journey. It was fun on "Generations" but WAY OVERDONE!! They took a good idea and ran it into the ground.

I can see your point, but both Deen songs are very good, Neal's song smokes, Ross' song is kind of a throwaway, but fun, and Jon's tune is good. I think it makes Gens a special CD. I don't think they should do it again, but it certainly doesn't ruin the record, as many people claim.

Agree. All members NEEDED to sing for their own reasons on this album. And it works for this album. When Dave28 says it was run into the ground, I like to think he meant the novelty would only serve for this record, Generations.

Deen should sing 1 track from here on out and then maybe a Jon or Jon/Steve duet. Other than that Ross and Neal should (and I think will) hang up the lead vox for recording purposes. And now there's plenty of material for a live setting to give Augie a blow w/out doing say a Ross on WLAL. They've all got at least 1 of their own JOURNEY #s to sing, not a damn cover.

I agree, but I wouldn't mind Neal singing another rocker. I find myself listening to In Self Defense more than any other tune on Gens. #2 would be Out of Harm's Way.

Augeri needs to be the main singer, at least 3/4 of cd. Other can have a song, but a duet with the would be cool. If the tried to done one like Perry-Rollie, SOME would say they can't do anything new or trying to copy Perry are. But I would like to see Augeri sing with Cain or Deen-ERIC

I agree. Wouldn't MIND another ISDstyle rocker frotned by Neal.... not necessary, but I'll take it.

As long as there's a generous helping of AUgeri fronted fast material, as w/ Generations, we're cool on that.

I still LOVE In Self Defense.

Have Deen and Steve share the vox on an album - why not?
This era has yet to really define itself.
Why not have it be the era of competing tenors.
The more, the merrier, as far as I'm concerned.

Neal would never let Deen front the band. Havn't you people got it yet. Nobody but Neal is allowed to front the band anymore.

It would look more stupid than it already does to have Deen and Augeri share vox. Deen already covers the high notes and people are going to start getting wise when they see Augeri's scratching his butt with the mic, while supposedly singing his heart out.
