First off...
I am neutral on this. I don’t know if he did or he didn’t. I’ll say this though....
There was a scandal like this that Stern broadcasted (for another singer) and you can here what he broadcasted below. The story goes that Enrique was lip-synching to the song during a concert and this is claimed to be a recording of what was actually going through his microphone as he pretended to sing:

the actual recording....

Enrique said to Howard Stern that the recording was more likely him messing with the sound-guys during a sound-check. He didn't deny it was him, though. I guess this is what fans expect to hear and they won’t be satisfied until they do.
If Augeri didn’t do it, then it’s easy to dismiss the speculation by issuing a statement. That puts the matter to rest. They have more to lose by not saying anything than saying something. If he did, well he can say nothing and take his chances that it won’t be found out. He will have to sing for the
entire length of the tour . If he has an off day or problems, people that are aware of this will make noise. He can't use a backing tapes at all. If he does and some sue happy fan see it (not Deano), or someone decides to turn him in, Journey can be sued. In Europe they may ask for their money back, but they won’t sue. In the US that's a different story. The whole situation is a big risk because it has made news, even in Canadian Classic Rock news!!!
Journey needs to say something.
As someone who is neutral on this, I will also say, this is a bad situation all around because I don’t like the idea of "outsiders" (none journey fans) getting a negative impression of the old and current line up. When they hear some of the garbage arguments floating around they will think we are all stupid, one way or the other.
Those that support the current line up trying to make this into a Perry/Augeri or Perryloon conspiracy-are beginning to look desperate. Perry ain’t in the band. He is not singing and he is not the sound guy. There are other people who have reason to see Journey go down. Anyone from an angry employee to an angry ex associate or someone who hates a band member. Perry ain’t the only person. Again the Perry/Augeri arguments or even putting Perry in this when he has left the band as a performer is desperate...at best.
Shouting at the Mod here for allowing the discussion, when he clearly has
not gone in favor of the theory, is stupid. He reported what is going on
only and asked that the band say something. In my opinion, he is more on the side of the band, but he had to report this as it would look bad if he did not. He did his job...end of story.
If people are angry that the Mod has allowed the discussions then don’t read the board. Go back to the official board where members want harp playing only- no meaty discussions on worthwile issues. You shouldn't come here and expect that's censorship- and it ain’t going to happen unless the band indicates that they are being slandered. They have said nothing. If some fans don’t like what people say (what the do) freely here, then don’t read. Everytime the complainers join the discussion you look like a hypocrite. You can't ask for censorship from the Mod but then expect that you should have your say freely. My only thing here is music, and the truth about what’s happening, that’s all.
Again, I am on no side, but my own and I want the truth. Whoever is lying should accept the consequences, be it the band or the fans that are making the claims. Gets no plainer than that.
These are just reports out there. Journey needs to say something...even if it’s simply “fuck off it’s all bull"! It’s makes no sense to have the fans abusing each other over this. If they like this from their fans then go to it....

Hollywood Dish - If You're A Coverband, Have A Coverband Name -
By Matt Iseman, Actor & Comedian
April 21, 2006
He's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack (Didn't think he was still with us, but Matt is back!)
I just went to see Journey live in concert and I was so excited until I got there and found out that they had fired their lead singer, Steve Perry, and replaced him with a new guy, Steve Augeri. Yet, they were still calling themselves Journey. Don't charge me Steve Perry prices to watch some long haired pretender do karaoke. Stop calling yourselves Journey because without Steve Perry you are not Journey, you are a Journey coverband. So take a coverband name: instead of Journey you could be A Really Long Trip. Or Didn't Stop Believin'. Or four guys whose names you don't know and a dude whose name sounds phonetically close to Steve Perry. I don't care how many original band members are left, nobody goes to a concert to see the drummer (except for the one-armed guy in Def Leppard who looks like he's playing Whack-a-Mole on expert level). Van Halen is the only band where you might justify keeping the band name while changing singers. But when Sammy replaced Diamond Dave, most people took to calling them Van Haggar. And even those that didn't know they were listening to a step-Halen: you still called them Van Halen, but they weren't your real Van Halen.
Look, I know history is rife with bands replacing lead singers and going on to fame and fortune: Genesis, AC/DC, Chicago, Anthrax, and Menudo. But I challenge the honesty of a brand that has gone close to 20 years since having a meaningful hit and then replacing the voice that got them there and still acting like you're the same band.
Steve Perry: I'm forever yours...faithfully.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I still bought the concert t-shirt.
