New Remastered CDs Question

I’m sorry if this has already been covered, I know Journey is releasing remastered versions of Infinity, Evolution, Departure, Escape, and Greatest Hits but does any one know why Frontiers or even Raised On Radio are not on this list.

Also I would love to purchase remastered versions of Journey, Look Into The Future, and Next does any one know if there are any plans to re-release those?

My guess is more money later. Why give everyone everything all at once, is what I would say is going on. It's not like anything extra is really being released on the remasters. They've all (Perry era) been re-mastered at least once already anyway. The additional songs on the CD's were released on the Time3 pkg and Greatest hits CD's, and in case people in the music biz don't know, people burn their own CD's with all those songs on them already anyway.

Great points. If they wanted anyone to purchase these they should have done something like throw in 2 "never before released" tracks. Hell, I have all of these songs and albums. We ALL probably do. I think this is a big waste of their time. It's an insult in some ways. How many times can you repackage the same stuff? Look how many of the same songs are on different albums. Take "Don't Stop Believin'" It's on Escape, Escape re-mastered, Esacpe re-mastered AGAIN, Greatest Hits and The Essential Journey. THE EXACT SAME SONG. At least on GHL it was LIVE.

Only speculation, but I'm beginning to see a pattern here.
First we had the Houston 1981 DVD followed up by the remasters of the albums covered on that DVD.

Now I heard recently from someone who knows John Kolodner that a Frontiers DVD was possibly the next project, so maybe a follow up of a Frontiers remaster. etc...

The remasters are a Perry/Kolodner project, so not likely, but remasters of the first three albums are sorely needed.

Didn't Kalonder recently "retire" from the biz? I mean people have been known to do projects as independent "producers", but who knows.

I'd love a Frontiers era DVD, maybe Philly '83 or the whole Frontiers and Beyond project, those would both be nice. Don't know if either one will come about though.

Hope they eventually re-release Captured along with a DVD. There are songs that were left off that I think the Die-hards would kill for like "Patiently" & "Winds Of March". Those along with VIDEO for it...I'd LOVE to have that. Hell...I would've rather had that then the Escape DVD. lol.

John Kalodner put it this way:

Right now Steve Perry and I are repackaging (with original packaging and artwork) and bringing up the masters to the state of the art CD standards for the entire Journey catalog and Steve's solo records. They should be released in the Summer and Fall of 2006.

Five Journey albums have been remastered and expanded with memorabilia-rich album booklets for an Aug. 1 release via Columbia/Legacy. A handful of the titles have new bonus tracks, including 1988's "Greatest Hits," which will feature the 1996 single "When You Love a Woman."

1978's "Infinity," which marked the vocal debut of Steve Perry, and 1979's "Evolution" retain their original track lists, while 1980's "Departure" will include the bonus tracks "Little Girl" and "Natural Thing."

The mega-selling 1981 album "Escape" will include live versions of "Don't Stop Believin'," "Who's Crying Now" and "Open Arms" from the recent archival CD/DVD "Live in Houston," plus the studio track "La Raza Del Sol."

Did they get it wrong? I'm hoping they will be remastered as well. The Houston stuff sounds so great, I was hoping they'd make the same improvements with the reissues...


I'm really hoping that in the next round, if there is one, that they'll reissue Frontiers with Only the Young and Ask the Lonely. That would be something to be excited about, for me. And, I know, I could just make my own...

Frontiers and Raised on Radio were remastered a few years ago.

Anyone know where I can get a copy of the Video on VH1 classics of Any Way You Want It?

It is the only live version of the song that is not sped up to fast for my taste. I also like how Perry keeps the repeats to himself instead of handing off to the crowd.

Frontiers and Raised on Radio were remastered a few years ago.

Actually, they were part of the whole Perry-era catalog remaster and re-release effort to tie in with Trial By Fire in 1996. You'll find that a lot of CD's that came out as remasters about a decade or so ago are now getting another freshening up and getting released yet again. Part of this I'm sure is about generating new revenue out of catalog product by the different labels, but it is also true that digital technology has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade and so it's not necessarily a bad thing to do remasters.

Remember now that the majority of casual fans, or those that may have just seen Journey for the first time this summer most likely do not have the boxed set so those "new" tracks may be appealing to them. Also, these are coming out with all new photo booklets and liner notes and are going to be released originally as Digipaks.

Not trying to defend the remasters necessarily, but the fact that Perry, along with Kalodner, is overseeing the project gives it some credibility in my eyes. He did a stellar job on the two DVD's, especially the Houston project. The sound on that is as crisp as anything I've ever heard.

yeah TheOptiMystic, you bring up a good point about technology and newer casual fans, plus pkg. I guess I figure since I have copies of everything already at least once or twice, why buy this newer pkg. I also agree about that awful gap, that should have been fixed long ago. I ended up editing the songs together on the computer and making it one file, so it'll at least play the right way.

Most people that are younger than 22-23, don't have much of an idera what tjhose large black "plastic" things are that look like larger versions of their cd's. I have the albums, tapes (some cases tracks too) & at least one copy of each CD. It get's to a point where no matter how much you love the music, you can only spend so much money on the same stuff over & over.

Not the whole Perry era. Dream After Dream was not done, and has only been released in Japan with the same mastering job 2x (maybe 3).

Infinity has already been remastered three times - the normal remaster, the gold disc, and a special release in Japan in an LP sleeve which is a totally different mastering job and was released between the gold disc and the official remaster.

Well, if you want to get technical, then you're correct. I meant domestic releases, which Dream After Dream sort of was and wasn't. In the early 90's it was released in the States as a budget title on cassette by Sony. Wish I bought it then.

Like I said, I don't agree with companies trying to squeeze every last dollar out of reissues, and Sony is one of the worst of the lot. Do you know how many times Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" has been reissued? Special edition after special edition. That being said, I know that the technology has really grown quite a bit in the last ten years. Look at the amazing job Tom Scholz did remastering the first two Boston albums recently. And Perry has an amazing ear, in my opinion. Not too long ago I listened to an original 1986 cassette of ROR, and even that twenty year old tape sparkles. The production job is stellar on that album, and he did the same job on the Houston DVD. Therefore, I will likely pick up these new copies.

...and Whocares, I agree with you, man. I've bought this stuff on vinyl and cassette (and multiple times, I might add) as well as CD. It'd be nice if they'd really dig into the vaults. I mean, Infinity with the entire radio show that they did with the Tower of Power horns as a bonus CD would be something really worth owning. Perhaps there just isn't the amount of unreleased material that we think there is. Or maybe there is and Perry doesn't feel it's up to his standards, being a self-professed perfectionist.
