This talk about HUGO and Chalfant

Postby Eric » Tue Jul 18, 2006 5:47 am

I just don't get it, well I get Chalfant a little but...

They cannot go get a sound-a-like...it would be cheesey. Even Augeri wasn't exactly a sound-a-like.

I would accept Mickey Thomas, as he could cover the old material, and brings a presence into the band as well. He also sang some Arrival cuts quite well on Over the Edge.

I think if people don't support JSS then they maybe should either reunite with Perry somehow someway...or hang it up.

I guess ideally would be to find a young singer who could cover old material and sing differently when need be. Kinda like an Augeri or Calfant from the early 90's...with A LOT of voice left. But whoever it is needs to have writing chemistry with Schon and Cain. New material is the only thing that keeps a band relevant.

Good point. Also Eric Martin might work.

Still hoping for a recoverd Steve......

What happened to that one guy from Vegas, Deano?

Hasn't worked yet. New material in concert helps, but even new material cannot make a band relevant...unless they were to work hard at getting it heard on radio, TV, movies, etc...

Mickey Thomas????? No frickin' way!

We don't need another look/sound alike. And already writing is pretty much irrelavant, as they'd have to play it live. They rarely play anything other than the D.D., so what would make people think that they'd come out full force and start playing the new stuff, over what brought the casual fans out?

Who's not supporting JSS? Besides the obviious people, I mean.

I don't actually think Hugo sounds exactly like Steve Perry. Hugo's voice is not as deep/raspy although they share a similar tone. Whilst Hugo looks like Steve Perry, Jeremy sounds almost exactly like him!

Never heard Kevin Chalfant though I hope to soon.

A Hugo fronted Journey would be awesome to see especially if he was allowed to write for the band. :D

Kevin is a great singer, but it's too late for Journey. They had their chance and discarded him for Perry. I would love to hear what they did with him (musically) around 95. Probably great music. Herbie Herbert even said what they had going was gonna make people forget about Steve Perry. While we NEVER forget Perry I bet the music was dynamite.

Wow, Mickey Thomas is really good! I still rate Timothy Lewis (Departure) over anyone other than Steve Perry, Steve Augeri or Hugo to front Journey for me at this point.

Other than "I've got a lot to learn" on the Storm's first CD, I've never heard anything I liked from Chalfant. In fact, I couldn't even get through the Shooting Star clips that were recently on here.

Hugo is pretty weak in my opinion.

He is still touring as Starship. And he released a solo CD last year featuring several Journey leftovers.

You don't care for the songs you've heard, or you simply do not care for his voice?

Dude,

Hugo and Chalfant both can cover the old material well. I understand you your issue with a sound-a-like but I don't agree to some extent. I don't think Hugo or Chalfant are exactly sound-a-like singers but they do have similar range and tone. I don't see either Hugo or Chalfant any different than Augeri as vocalists. All can cover the old material well but have their own groove too. Hugo will continue to take a bad wrap because he looks like Perry. From my view, his vocals and writing talent are the best option for covering the old material as well as going forward. I give a fuck what the dude looks like so, cut his hair, color it blond, give him a nose job, or whatever; I want to hear Journey as it is intended to sound and Hugo can do it.

Hugo's writing talent is better than his vocal talent IMHO. Valentine completely kicks ass as do his solo efforts. Hugo writes better Journey stuff than Journey has since ROR. Journey could do themselves a favor by releasing Hugo's material under their brand and get back on the charts. I'm sure I'll take a beating for this but Hugo kicks complete ass and is the best option for Journey to go forward while also doing justice to their heritage.

Chalfant is also a good option for similar reasons. I think Hugo's writing skills are better than Kevin's which is why Hugo gets the nod in my opinion. Chalfant has an established track record as The Storm releases show. He kicks ass as well.

I'll hold my judgment on JSS until after I see the Indy show live. JSS is a great guy and a great talent, period. However, if the boots capture the groove properly, he is not the guy for Journey. From what I've heard on the boots, I could cover the material better. No bag intended towards JSS, I just don't think his voice fits Journey based on the boots but lets wait and see what the Indy show conveys.

Finalflight, you and I are on the same page. You must be cool man.

Abitaman, I'd REALLY love to hear your boots of Chalfant doing Journey. I'd be forever grateful if you'd would share you good fortune.

The songs. And his voice is no better than Augeri's and they've already gone that route how I see it...

I like all 3 choices.

I would reverse order, only because Mills is more polished than Jimi, and Jeremy might sound too much like Perry.

Anybody actually heard Mickey Thomas live in the last couple years? I heard him a few years ago and he was AWFUL. He used to be great with Starship, but he just couldn't carry a tune when I heard him.

I saw the Storm open for Brian Adams in '91 or '92 I think. Kevin and Gregg singing "Just the Same Way" Is the closest I've ever gotten to seeing the Journey I'd love to see. I also have Chalfant's "Running With The Wind" solo cd. It's a great cd, he's got great writing ability I think could really re-launch Journey.
