Has Sweet and Simple ever been played live?

Postby monster » Sun Aug 20, 2006 12:15 am

Hello all

Just wondering if Sweet and Simple off the Evolution album has ever been played live and if not, why do you think that is?

If it has been played, I would love to hear it, so anyone who has it ,would you be so kind to post it?

One of my all time favourite Journey songs, what does anyone else think of the track?

Thanks in advance

LOVE that song. It was mine and my 1st high school girlfriends "song"...everyone else was claiming OPEN ARMS as theirs. NOT ME , baby! None of that top 40 stuff ...it was an album track for us! :)

Yeah, I've not seen any boots including that song. I'm sure that'd be a tough one to sing live.

Well, I didn't go to see them until "Frontiers" - '83, so that's my "starting point of reference".

Here's my reasoning for your "if not" question:

One phrase - in the middle of the song:

"It's wha-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAT I liiiiiiiiiiiike doooooooooo-oo-oo-oo-oo yeah!"

Don't know how many times ANY singer - especially Steve - can repeat that "octave pole-vault" night after night...

GOOD LORD!

That's why I said it would be difficult to sing live. That part is amazing even in a studio setting.

In the studio,SP worked on S&S like the perfectionist he was.He went back on certain parts and re-recorded the vocals something like 34 times until he was satisfied with the result.

I love that song.

I'm almost positive Deen sang it last tour.

If it was played I doubt it has been since the Evolution tour itself.

Friggin' love this tune, too. Another flagrant violation of my no-ballade clause. But it's not a power ballade so I'll give myself a pass.

Sweet and Simple live

Postby tupchurch » Sun Aug 20, 2006 12:19 pm

According to the sources I have, it has never been played live for the simple reason already stated, it kills you vocally to do it or you sing it in a lower key and everyone is upset that it doesn't sound like that on the CD.

Will have to look, may be on one of my early Evolution boots. Want to say I have heard it, but wouldn't swear to it-ERIC

JSS formerly said that in his youth he was able to sing this song.
Now that age has inevitably taken it's toll, he can't quite get there!
It remains exclusively an album track, really.
Deen could prolly do it, but why bother.

Indeed he did. Not Perry but he did a decent enough job.

Come to think of it, didn't Deen tackle it during the Pre-Perry portions of the 30th anniversary tour.

A bit odd to put it in the pre-Perry part but that's the tour he sung it on for sure.

Tell me about it.
On some nights they even included "Gone Crazy" into the early portion of the set.
That should've been reserved for later.
Preferably after the curtain's been drawn and the custodial staff is cleaning up.

He did "Patiently" at the Indianapolis show and I don't remember hearing that they did "Sweet and Simple" at all on that tour.

Nah, I am pretty sure I read it in a few of the setlists.

LMAO! I like that song. Compared to the rest of Generations, at least it rocks! Still, too funny!

I'm just shitting around.
I actually like the song alot, too.
I just thought it translated very poorly live.
There were mass exoduses of biblical proportions in venues across the nation everytime Ross decided to open his mouth to sing.
I ducked down in my seat, I was so embarassed...Ross in his dinky little bluesman hat. So gay.

Yeah, quite embarrassing....Even Augeri bolted the stage, and if HE is embarrassed, then you know it's bad.

Well "Abitaman" commented that he wasn't sure if it was ever played even after u had already confirmed it was.
So did "ConversationPC".
