IF the shoes below fit then wear them and fall on a rusty spike ! All others ignore.

You fucktards that are saying JSS is a Perry clone obviously have no natural ear for tonality or music in general. This guy is so different from any singer Journey has ever had and he had quite the following before SS. This guy has sung lots of music in many genres. Well, I haven’t heard him do any country, rap or opera yet but I bet he could. How many singers can you think of that can nail Queen and Journey and while doing so maintain their originality? HE does what is commonly called “Serving the song” meaning he does what needs to be done to make the song sounds as good as possible. The only thing he cops is some of the Perryisms in regards to how Perry pronounced certain words while singing. He does this because its absolutely necessary. As a singer I understand this and as clueless non musical morons some of you obviously do not. This guy can sing any genre and that I would place a large wager on. I bet he could nail some old blue eyes if he wanted to. That’s called being a musician not a clone. He is doing what needs to be done for the job. Stop shitbagging him for crying out loud. Ya know, I hope that Perry comes back so you assheads can hear all the songs a whole step down (that means E becomes D and its lower) not that you would notice anyway. Will you ever be happy ? If you want to hear Perry put the old fucking records on. I WAS part of the no one can replace Perry camp and JSS has convinced me to move on. The latest boots I have heard sound fucking wonderfull. Journey has new life and is a new band. Get over it.

You're not being your own man if you're using perryisms. He's already singing the songs Perry's voice made hits. To copy his inflections is a bit much.

You're telling me that after he's been in the business for some 20 years and virtually unknown, he's going to become an overnight sensation by covering JGH with Perry overtones?

Sir Soto does a fine job at defending his own honor here.
He comes around cuz he chooses to and not you me or the
Queen could sway the choice he makes.
On the other hand he can make a difference in
what others think.....by continuing to give his all
and sing his balls off, those that are open to it will
take pleasure in the performance.
Those that are closed minded and only have tastes
for Augeri or Perry are missing out on the music that's
being crafted once again......they're loss.

Wouldn't worry about JSS; he seems to have an even keeled handle on the frontman's role especially with 8 years of observing what went on w/ SA. He prolly realizes we have a few nitwitted trolls who usually then betray their real motives by ranting and raving stuff like, "HA!! JSS READS MY POSTS!!! I CAN'T BE IGNORED!!! I GET THE BOARD IN UPRORARS!!!!"

"You're not being your own man if you're using perryisms"

That quote alone shows you are clueless. As JSS knows and any musician worth a shit knows you have to "Serve the song" 1st and foremost. I have an idea. If you read this JSS, next time a soundcheck is recorded drop all the Perry vowels and isms and post it or do your best Tom Jones imitation. You will then see why its needed. Ya know you could say that Deen is imitating Steve Smith just buy playing drums for Journey. WOuld it be nice if "He were is own man" and played double bass triplets all the way through Wheel in the Sky ? As a drummer I can tell he holds back and is way more aggresive on drums that Journey calls for. He holds back because it "serves the song". The song has to be served by all members of the band or the song suffers and as a pro JSS knows this. I know he can defend himself however, I feel inclined to educate the tonedeaf and clueless.

He doesn't have to be a Perry clone. He DOES have to be able to hit the notes.
With the Hollywood Bowl boot, it sounds like he's getting closer and better all the time. Cool. I was incredibly skeptical from everything I've heard. The HB recording gives me hope that this will be a good transition. Still some rough spots, but NOTHING like the little Elf that jumped out on Be Good To Yourself from ealier in the tour. THAT scared the shit outta me. (Sorry Jeff).

I haven't heard JSS copying the inflections. I have heard him do some of the standard Perry stage stuff

Anyway you Want it: JSS- "All Night" Audience "All Night"
Don't Stop Believing before the guitar break, he does the Perry "NEAL!"

Pretty miniscule stuff to be bitching about. Who cares? That's all I've noticed. I'll be happy if he hits the notes and helps the band to grow. I've been pretty skeptical so far just because his voice 'doesn't sound like Journey' to me. In fact, there are spots where he jumps into Metal Mode that I cringe at, but at least the notes are correct. I'm just not a Metal guy. I wasn't into Sammy when he first joined Van Halen either. It took me till the second album with him. I WAS into Augeri the second he joined Journey though. His banter, though subdued always felt genuine rather than the 'stock lines'. He also had more range and was smoother when he joined. He was like Escape and Prior Perry. Not Frontiers and Rough Perry. Seemed a much easier transition. Things change though.

It's cool though that THIS time, Journey is touring FIRST and recording later. That will give JSS a chance to iron out the kinks and find his niche with Journey.

Let him find his way...
I'll still be pissing and moaning about blown vocal parts live, but me doing that will change nothing. If things keep going as they are, things will be fine.

In the words of Steve Perry: "Playing live means never having to say you're sorry!" True.

Good point, He plays all the the same basic fills and rhythms because thats how the songs go...No one ever had a problem last year with Jon copying Greg Rolie....He plays and sings all the same parts Rolie did in the Infinity/Evolution/Departure days....Jeff is just doing the hits the justice they deserve. Deen Obviously tries to sound more like Perry when singing the older stuff, a fact made even more obvious by the fact that he really doesn't sound like Perry on his Generations tracks, But no one bitches about that...People just want something to bitch about, and JSS is the only new thing to happen lately, so he takes the brunt of it...

Its about time someone posts this. I too was part of the Perry IS Journey era, and I'm proud to say that I have moved up in my thinking. I'm glad JSS has taken the reigns because frankly, its sad to sit around and wait for an icon to poke his head up every once in a while, gets his fans all excited, and then nothing. I know Perry has a life, I just wish it involved the stage. JSS has revived Journey. Stop bagging on the guy for doing what you all wish you could do. Hes a wanted man, hes an envied man. Hes a rock god. Like it or not, he's never going anywhere!!!

If JSS is a "Perry clone" does that make Perry a Mercury, Hagar, Cooke clone? I mention these names because I've heard JSS sing songs and sound like all three of those guys mentioned. Hell on the Soul SirkUS song "Peephole" before he starts singing the chorus JSS sounds like a dead ringer for Hagar. If I'm not mistaken Perry has said he's used some Cooke'isms in high vocals, so I guess that makes him a Cooke clone.

If JSS sings the Journey songs a different way then he is lambasted and then "trying to rewrite the matierial" if he sings them the way they were written (which they should sound similar) then he's a "Perry Clone" even though his voice doesn't sound like Perry's and if you want a Perry clone then start talking about the fraud known as Augeri. Anyway you want it JSS can't win on some of these discussions, pun intended

I'd rather have JSS singing for Journey hitting the notes live that Augeri couldn't hit with the help of the tapes, then not having Journey around at all. Perry even if he were to come back as much of a miracle as that would be wouldn't even be able to hit those magical notes that he was able to hit during the 80's. The only reason he would be back is for a very nice piece of change, and I think that time passed when "Trial By Fire" was released and they didn't tour for it.

I attended the Journey concert in July and I can attest to the fact that JDoubleS sounds nothing like Steve Perry. Even if he did inflict some type of emotion into the song to make it 'perry-esque' - it was JSS singing and no one else. He made the songs his own.

'Nuff said...

Have a wonderful day and peace to all!

A rock god, catherine  He's a cool guy but he ain't in the Plant or Hendrix league just yet...keep that term for a few more years down the line  As for not going anywhere,I pretty much guess he could pave his own future with or without Journey. The music biz is just one big vehicle designed to jump on and off when the moment arises. As for Perry I still maintain a Rod Stewart type of comeback...Perry covers Cooke would make commercial sense and it would bring a stunning career to a fitting end.

If nothing else, if he doesn't feel like writing new R&R songs, he should do this. However, I'd like to see him keep it to rock/R&R. If he's gonna pull a Stewart, I hope he goes the route of Stewart's LATEST covers album which drops the oldies and covers rock and roll songs.

I look at it this way...

For 25 years I have been singing along to Journey tunes in my car, at home, in the shower and, when I do, I use the same inflections and Perry-isms too because THATS WHAT I GREW UP LISTENING TO 1000 TIMES. Granted I sound like shit because I am not nor never will have the vocal powers of Perry but you get my point. Those "isms" just become natural from listening so many times and being a FAN.

Jeff has commented time and time again that Perry was a HUGE influence on him and that he has nothing but the upmost respect for him. He is a FAN... has probably sang along to these tunes in the car or in the shower 1000 times over and, like the rest of us, the so-called "isms" are probably just natural.

Just my 2 piddly cents :)

I've been listenning to Cooke for a few weeks now, there's some shit hot tunes needing a new airing and Perry should consider applying his own style to them...rock and roll covers wouldn't do it for me as I'm certain Sam's songs would shift CD's in the shed load for Perry.

Agree, I think a covers record of any kind would move more units than an original record unfortunately.
Stewart saw the light after the Human bust and he's guffawing all the way to the bank now, 5 covers albums later.

If you've got a Cooke CD, put on Rome wasn't built in a Day, and think of Perry singing this, fuckin' fantastic it would be..honestly

Cmon Nig he's/she's tecnically right about this point,Soto never made it in the states in 20 years the only reason most of us here know him is because of Andrews site and the people in the states that dont know about Andrews site have no clue who Soto is
