Was a treat to see Journey at the appollo last night, great sound, great performances by all a truly enjoyable evening, but a somewhat interesting one .
I havent read anything up on new singer Jeff Scott Soto as Id rather make my own mind up than go in wit preconceived ideas etc..

I thought Jeff came across as a super frontman, so full of life, energetic and a great performer, his voice is very strong and I thought was particulary good on "edge of the blade| and "after the fall" , he sang dont stop believin great too.
HOWEVER I really dont think he is a good choice for journey, A bull in a china shop came to mind, I didnt think there was enough sensitivity in his voice on any of the songs and didnt put across what steve perry or steve augeri did.

Steve Perry will always be the ultimate voice of journey, but if we cant have him, steve Augeri will do very nicely! If anyone hasnt seen the arrival dvd 2001 with steve augeri on vocals just watch it, brilliant. delivers all the spirit and feeling of journey!

PS Enjoyed Danny vaughan short accoustic set, but just who was that MUPPET on the guitar????

I liked your review and opinions...except for this part: "I didnt think there was enough sensitivity in his voice on any of the songs and didnt put across what steve perry or steve augeri did." Unlike Augeri, JSS was NOT hired to sound like Perry. He sounds ENOUGH like Perry to do the catalog justice....much more than "justice" actually. That said, he's here to give the band a chance at "now" rather than "then." Besides, Augeri's voice is fried and his standing with a lot of fans is NOT good.

Exactly St John, and I would also disagree with the statement below, but that's JMO.

I take your point JSS was not hired to sound like steve perry, good because he doesnt and no reason why he should, but I WOULD prefer to see him singing new material , if it has to be with journey, or better still leave journey as it is or was and call this something else. I think he would get a fairer shot out of it and there would be less criticism and comparisons being made like on here.

If they were going to do that, the time would have been in 1998. Many of us never thought Augeri sounded at all like Perry or did justice to the classics and much prefer Jeff's style on those songs.

Hi Milly and welcome.

A few questions for you,if you don't mind...Can you answer with Yes or No,please?

1.Did you honestly enjoy the show with JSS in Manchester?Did you sing along?Had fun, felt good?

2.What do you think about Jeff as a singer? Can he sing the classic Journey material or not?

3.You think it would be normal for Journey to change their name (considering that there are still 3 original Journey members in the band) and then go on tour with a setlist that will HAVE TO contain Journey material?
(Schon and Cain co-WROTE those songs,it's their career,so why drop them, you know what I mean?)

4.Are you interested in hearing new Journey material?

5.Would you attend another Journey show in the future?

Cherish the past, enjoy the present, believe in the future.

Yes 1998 would have been a good time to leave journey were it is and go and start a new project!
It must have been hard for steve augeri to try and replace steve perry, I dont think there is any comparison except both have fantastic voices and sing with emotion , both are suited to journey type songs. Whereas in my opinion jss just isnt!
I thought there were a few filler tracks thrown in last night which were upbeat ,fast and didnt require much vocal expertise etcc...such as keep on runnin, which in my opinion was one of 4 tracks that could have been replaced with a more classic song.

I was surprised that the definative journey tracks such as open arms & faithfully were passed to the drummer! never seen that done before and what a talent they have in deen. For me the highlight of the night was when deen sang "still they ride" heartfelt and so journey like.

I would go and see Jss again but not with Journey!

Well, I am hoping that they are working on new material. But to ask them to sing new material now is silly. They have to have time to work on the songs, tweak them for the best sound. And they need to be recorded. JSS just joined in December, and I don't know if they could get songs written and done that fast. I think some fans are asking too much already about doing new material now.

Journey will be call Journey until the band retires. Get used to it. :D

Ah, the old "they should've changed the name after Perry" shows up again.

Andrew, I have an idea for a new emoticon: like one that has one of the yellow heads putting bullets into a revolver, spinning the chamber, snapping it shut, putting it up to it's head, pulling the trigger and then slumping over with the tounge hanging out, ala Archie Bunker.

Could you imagine if your employer said, "you're doing a great job, but your hair looks like shit and you are a little too tall"? Even if you were doing an outstanding job of what you were hired for? I couldn't handle being in the public spotlight because I know my hair looks like shit 90% of the time, I would hate for people to criticize me about it on a daily basis.

i was kinda thinking about this as well,, i couldnt take it ,, well , if the money was there i might 8) ..journey fans are very opinionated, and complicated,, name another band with this kinda fan base that critiques everything from clothes to wordings of an interview that happend 15 years ago.. maybe kiss , but us fans of them fist fight over who had the best boots in '74,, journey , tom jones, elvis,, kiss, van halen , toby keith ,, all have fanatical fans,, its actually pretty cool 20 years after their heyday,,

One of the top 10 funniest posts of all-time!!! And I agree with it 100%. If they didn't change the name when they went from a fusion band to top 40, why the fuck would they change it now? And who gives a shit what they call themselves, isn't it supposed to be ALL about the music, anyway?
