Revisiting Jeff's "Lost In The Translation" Album

Postby Carlitto H@kk » Wed May 02, 2007 6:58 am

Since I got "Lost In The Translation" from iTunes last year,
I had taken in the majority of listens while driving in my car or
while doing things at work. Because of that, I never really "listened"
to this album... until recently.

Lately I have been truly listening and absorbing this album thru my
Bose Triports while doing lawn work or at the gym and have discovered
a few things that I just thought I'd share. I'm curious as to what others might think.

First off, this album is more amazing than I originally thought. And it's not just
the songs or the production (all killer, no filler). It's even more amazing now
because I can almost hear where Journey has the potential to go.
I could hear songs like Find Our Way, If This Is The End and, of course, Believe In Me
on a future Journey release without losing any of their freshness and edge. Hell, anyone else
notice that you can pratically sing AWYWI to the chorus of High Time?
Anyone worried that Jeff can't write Journey-Style tunes take notice.

Secondly, the musicianship on this album is incredible. Now, since I got this album from iTunes,
I don't have the liner-notes to know who's playing guitar on each song. I know Neal is on BIM.
But how are the guitar duties/parts split up between Gary and Howie? There are some really amazing
riffs/solos throughout this album. And I guess I had no idea that Jeff was as talented on the Bass as he is.
You can hear many influences throughout this album as well; Journey, Queen... But one influence or
'comparison" I heard was actually a real treat. Some may not like this or agree with what I
think I heard but...

My third discovery was that alot of songs, melodies and guitar playing on this album
reminded me of one of my own favorite albums of the early 90's:
Extreme's "III-Sided Story". Some of you may take that as a diss to Jeff if you hated this band but
I mean it in the sincerest form of compliment. There is some riff-age and solo work on this
album that harkens back to some of Nuno's greatest playing. Anyone thinking that comparing some of
Howie and Garys' playing to Nuno's as a diss is out of their minds.
And the big vocal harmonies and lead vocal work; I could hear Cherone singing some of these tracks.
Again, I mean this in the sincerest for of a compliment.
I just wonder if Jeff, Gary and Howie were ever big fans of Extreme or this album?
Heck, Sacred Eyes is very remeniscent of Hole-Hearted.

Anyway, those are some of the things I've re-discovered about this
amazing album and just wanted to share with you all.

Hey Carl! You may be the only one who cares, but I love this cd. I think it showcases JSS's talent. I think it falls more in line with Soul SirKus (which for the record I also loved) than Journey, however. :)

That was the first solo cd I got of his. And it's still my favorite, gets more airplay than Prism, Essential Ballads or any of the others. It's one of those cds you can just put on and let play without having to skip over songs. Agree with your take on Sacred Eyes too, it does. Actually had Dulce Lady and Soul Divine (a couple favorites) just blaring yesterday. :D His solo and the Journey sound is going to mix soooooooo well.....can't wait!

I noticed on the JSS site, he has a little bit about what each song on Talisman 7 is about, I like reading that kind of stuff. One of my favorite Perry interviews I heard was one where he talks about where each of the StreetTalk songs kind of came from. Hey Jeff, would love to hear about some of the songs on Lost in Translation, any where on the web to find that?

That would be pretty cool. I wonder if High Time's
AWYWI-sounding chorus was accidental or on purpose?

Thought you were talking about the bill murray movie. GOD what a waste that was...
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

"Lost in THE Translation" is one of the better albums I've purchased in the last few years. I love it, especially the songs you mentioned in particular.

I like what one reviewer on amazon.com said about the album in their closing paragraph...

If you long for the days were musicians actually sang, played their own instruments, wrote catchy songs, and played in standard tuning; look no further then Jeff Scott Soto.

LIIT is definitely one of the best albums out there,I was really impressed and it didn't have to grow on me or something - loved it since audition #1.
"Believe In Me" is the BGTY of this album! What a song!
If that's a proof of Jeff & Neal's writing chemistry,I can only expect a killer new Journey album! :D

Btw,you're right about Sacred Eyes,Carlitto..Extreme is what popped in my mind also and loved it (I also love Extreme, always did 8) )

So can you hear what I heard, in regards to alot of Nuno-esque guitar riff-age
and vocal melodies/harmonies reminiscent to the III-Sided Story album
throughout the entire LITT album??? Listening again today I even noticed
that Find Our Way has a little Color Me Blind feel to it...

You have good ears,Carlitto... :) "III Sides To Every Story" has a certain kind of feel to it and I can sure hear some elements from it on LITT.
However, truth to be said - and I'm not saying this because Jeff might read this - I like LIIT much more that Extreme's album.
"III Sides" has a few powerful songs that stick in one's mind, but otherwise is a mish-mash of ideas (love the all the solos and guitar work on it,tho,Nuno is genius ),while LIIT is a very well thought out album from the 1st song until the last.It has a great unity and there really are no fillers on it.

Yes,I hear the "Color Me Blind" feel on "Find Our Way",but just like the whole album,I like FOW much better - that chorus is just perfect!
Jeff's and Cherone's vocals are somewhat similar,I like both on those 2 songs, can't decide...

Like someone said sometime ago here,a "Hole Hearted" style song written for the new Journey CD would be great.
Jeff would do a great job on it and I'm sure it would sound Journey-esque enough but fresh at the same time.Just a thought. :)

p.s. I have to log out now,but I'll be back later to tell you if I can sing AWYWI to High Time... God have mercy on my neighbors.

LITT is my fave of Jeff's solo work. I really like "High Time".......kind of an anthem like chorus....reminds me of the good old arena rock days! As much as I am chomping at the bit for a new Journey disc, I do hope sometime in the future we will still get to hear some of Jeff's solo stuff live. *ducking*
