First Power Ballad

Postby styxman » Sun May 20, 2007 8:38 am

Read an article in Rock Magazine yesterday, the journalist said to the Night Ranger members that Sister Christian was the start of the Power Ballad but to their credit both Keagy and Blades stated Journey were the first to introduce this...discuss

I think Journey's first "power ballad" was Faithfully. Open Arms didn't have "power" it was just a ballad. You need more drums and guitar....hence the "power" part.

I think Open Arms was the first ballad to be catagorized as a Power Ballad but the nature of the catagory changed as more bands jumped on the wagon.

Wrong.

If you listen to Open Arms, it does have some chops, and a omni guitar chord. OA live sounded really powerful when Perry sang it, and then again with Deen.

Journey pioneered it, then Dennis DeYoung heard it, pulled down his pants and started to feed the geese....and fed em until he wrote Babe....Then Kevin Cronin, also heard and he already had his cock in his femenine hands and he shot a ballads load worth all over the music sheet and you had Can't Fight this Feeling. Then of course BA got into the act and wrote the biggest song ever, Everything I Do, I do it for You.

Journey not only pioneered it, but perfected it. It haunts them to this day.

I'm on the fence on that one. More of a "mid-tempo" to me than a power ballad.

Keep on Lovin You was in 1980, and OA in 81, but perhaps KOLY was seen as a mid tempo ballad?

Several things.

1) "Everything I Do...." is more rancid than 2 year old cum in dog's ass. (Though it was successful)

2) What about "Unchained Melody" as the first power ballad? And that song was Top 5 over 30 years apart. BTW, it blows away BOTH Open Arms and Everything I Do.

I guess it's not a "power ballad", but Beth by KISS was the first time a hard rock band came out with a ballad, wasn't it?

I love Styx but Babe wasn't a song just a waste of space...period. When did the word Power Ballad first come in to circulation?

"Beth" is a shit stain of a song. Criss couldn't write, play, or sing. I love Kiss live, but they're a bunch of no-talents. The stage show is second to none, though.

I kept thinking about that when I was posting before. I guess it comes down to that ever-changing definition of ballad. To me Open Arms was the first song slow enough to be a ballad but powerful enough to be a "rock" song.

What about Nazareth's "Love Hurts"? 1976. Is "More Than a Feeling" considered a power ballad? I think it's one of the 10 greatest, most enduring rock songs ever, but I don't know how to classify it.
