Trying to understand Neal

Postby Jeremey fan forever » Sun Jun 24, 2007 8:52 am

I remember Steve Perry saying great things about Neal's talent on many occassions, but despite Neal's very recent obsession with getting a singer who can replicate the Perry sound as much as possible, I don't recall Neal ever saying anything good about Perry's voice or his talent. In fact, I think the nicest things I have every heard Neal say about any singer that he has worked with were about JSS, when he called him "the real deal" and a real "camelion" because of his versatility. Ummm....Neal? :?:

I need to say something on Neal's behalf here.

We can all beat the living shit out of him, for some of his decisions and such, but this guy is that good on the guitar, and I have talked to him many times and believe me, he respects the talents of Steve Perry. He has told me plenty about Perry and he never ever spoke ill of his skills. There is a respect there to be sure.

Sure, but Journey can just get a replacement for him too. Maybe a taller guitarist.

Really? That is good to know, because as a fan that always bothered me a little. I thought, man that's the greatest singer in rock saying how tremendous Neal is (which is true) but why doesn't Neal realize how great Perry is?

I'd like to hear some of those compliments if anyone would care to share. I some how missed hearing them.

So why can't he publicly acknowledge Steve's talent and contributions, as Steve has done for him? He's low, and not just in stature. If I hadn't already known that from his lack of regard for Perry I'd know it now from the way he treated his personal friend and pick for the Journey front position, JSS.

If I still had any vestiges of regard for him because of his talent, it's gone now. He needs to form a support group with EVH called LEGS. It'll be for assholes with Lead Egomaniacal Guitarists Syndrome.

Sherrie, Neal has acknowledged Perry many times. He doesn't hold some 50 favourite Q+A thing yearly. If you listen to Neal, he speaks highly of Steven plenty. I am not trying to say Neal is Father Sierra, because he is a shit at times, but yes, he has spoken highly of Espee.

Perry by the way, gets his digs in at Schon if you read between the lines.

neal knows his place,, and hes fed up with it,, HE wants to be the household
name no matter whos in the way.. he deserves it because he is the most amazing
rock n roll guitar talent i have ever heard, but still ..

1. a fan walks up to neal anytime between 1988-june 2006 () and asks," hey
man ,, good show,,but when are you getting back with perry,, he was the best wasnt he?"

2. a fan walks up to steve perry's limo tinted BMW , taps on the window and asks
through the 1/4 inch crack.."hey man ,, when are you getting journey together and
touring?, i havent heard from your band in years!"

They've both praised each other highly, as well as gotten in plenty of digs. Both have been pretty shitty at times. What I've often read between the lines is that they're like brothers in a volatile family feud. Maybe it's just what I want to see, lol, but underneath all of the anger there seems to be some genuine fondness and respect of each other's talent.

And, damn, they were good together!!!!

one of the two, not saying who, wrote a song about the good times with the other. I'm still waiting for the other to return the favor.

I'll say this about Neal. When he's on your side, he is the best. The coolest, the greatest, and the one you want to party with...however, when he is on the other team, he is a dick.

Neal made himself crystal clear when he formed Soul Sirkus. It was going to be a vehicle where his guitar skills would be showcased so he could finally get the recognition he deserved as a rock guitar GOD (His words I believe, or something to that effect). He was always in the shadow of Perry and never got the credit in the press for how great a guitar player he is. So, after Soul Sirkus crashed, along came his buddy JSS to continue the Journey but guess what? JSS was getting all the accolades and his obvious ability as a great frontman turned Neal back into someone in the shadow. I think that's what this is all about. So, el stabo in the backo!

Neal can do ANYTHING. Any style, any approach...the man is a legend, no matter what has happened peripherally. In my mind, he's more talented than EVH - I mean, has Eddie ever segued into the blues, jazz, melodic rock, or fusion? No. He's like EVH, Santana, Eric Johnson and Wes Montgomery rolled into one. Think about it:

Santana (contributed about half the solos on his two records with the band)
early Journey (fusion rock)
Perry-era Journey (melodic rock / rock / pop)
HSAS (soft metal)
Schon/Hammer (experimental)
Bad English (power pop)
Hardline (melodic hard rock)
Abraxas Pool (blues)
solo material (every genre imaginable)

Name one other guitarist with a resume like that. He should ALWAYS be mentioned with the names of the most elite in his profession...especially for loser Nirvana-lovers who claim Cobain was "far more talented".

I wouldn't exactly call Neal proficient at jazz, but what a scary talented rock player. And he doesn't really
know any theory, it's all instinct.

He's still a dick, a bad businessman, and I truly believe he's capable of so much more than friggin Open Arms,
over & over & over again...nite after nite after nite. And all this lead singer bullshit, time wasted when he
could be creating new music.

But "old" music seems to come 1st these days.
