Yes I am biased however as a musician I think that I can take in everything I have heard and be objective. After watching the Escape Dvd on my NEW Harmon Kardon/Bose setup in 5.1 I have to say that Mother Father from the Escape DVD is the the most fucking soulfull, fucking ungodly powerfull, fucking pitch perfect live vocal performance out of everything I have ever heard before. You can say a lot of things about Journey when they are compared to thier contemporaries however above all else as a vocal band with the empashis on harmonies between the singing members there isnt one better. The Eagles may equal them on the harmonies however Perry's ungodly fucking true crystaline tenor adds the perfect filet migon to an already satisfying musical meal.

I think I am becoming a loon. Funny thing is that I have known about Journey since Escape was big and even though I though they were cool tunes its just recently that Journey's music has revealed that it is timeless. In my mind that puts them in the same league as the Beatles, Pink Floyd etc because 20+ years after the release of their best material is it revealed that it has only grown better with age. Cant say that about any of their peers from the same time period can you ?

Despite what happens with the whole singer thing remember that these guys have written some of the most endearing, timeless tunes in rock n roll. Hate Fro and Geeky Anal fairy piano dude all you want for the recent bullshit but the fact cannot be denied that they were directly responsible for this acheivment.

The Beatles re-defined rock and roll and roll.... and influenced the way people think about social issues around the world.... Journeys music has been successful and band members do have a record of philanthropy .... but nowhere NEAR the scale of the John, Paul, George and Ringo....

this is raw,, no fun stuff on the vocals,, folks have no idea what it takes to pull this off.. hearing yourself through a monitor .. and keeping pitch,, its confusing to play an instrument , hear yourself , know its you, and still do everything right.. but vocals????? a live show can be terrifying.. this performance is top form.. ..... this is not singing in the shower.. real pro's..

I like your last line! LOL!!! I agree with you on how great they are. It amazes me that they haven't been inducted in to the Rock and roll hall of fame. I've read that it's all political, but how the hell can they justify some of the bands they've inducted, yet neglect Journey who's put out so many millions of albums??? Pisses me off!!!

They ARE timeless as well! I'll go weeks or months sometimes without listening to Journey (Don't shoot me down!!!), but everytime I bust out a track, it's like it's fresh and new. I have to admit though, that while I was playing with Frontiers, some of the songs started sounding repetitive! I had to listen to them a lot while I was rehearsing for the gigs, and I honestly thought I might get burned out on Journey at one point! I have to add though, that every time I played the stuff live, that feeling went away and it was just an amazing experience!!! Those songs are a keyboardist's dream to play!

Sorry, I started rambling there...just had a flashback! And NO, I'm not stoned! Won't be able to do that 'till I retire at 43 years old. Got a few more years to go!

My vote however, goes to "Patiently" live in Houston, 1980 on the Departure tour. This is a fairly well recognized bootleg, (sometimes called "Texas Departure")and though the entire concert is stellar, "Patiently" is just insane vocally. The acrobatics that Perry demonstrates at the end of the tune are mind blowing.

I remember playing the Patiently track to a friend who's an opera singer and she was amazed about how smoothly he goes from one note to another without any noticeable effort.

I believe that the very short clip of "Patiently" that they show on Behind the Music is from this same show (they only show a couple seconds). I guess that means that somewhere there is video footage of this whole show floating around. I've only seen footage of 3 or 4 tunes, but hopefully the whole concert will surface on DVD one day.

There are many vocalists that ahve such fantastic voices....so I couldn't say..although I will say Klaus Meine of Scorpions has one heck of a voice for a rather dimunitive fella, got a CD they did with the Berlin philharmonca, and he has such a powerful voice..just brilliant to listen to.
Having said that there are so many others...ooooh i hate having to make choices like this....

I agree with everything you have said BUT this performance of “Mother, Father” and a few others from the Houston '81 show are better than anything a lot of bands have put out including The Beatles, performance-wise anyway. This is truly one of the best rock vocal performances of all time as LD stated but he went overboard when he tried to put them in the same league overall as The Beatles or Pink Floyd. I forgive him though his mind was slightly altered.

John lennon was a very good song writer as is Sir Paul McCartney, as for drug induced I think many people of that era did, as well as some of our greatest Rock legends that we rave about, so I don't think one can really use that as a reason for not liking someone from that era, it was prevelent at the time...
He did not hate everything in the world he looked at the world through the eyes of a typical lancashire lad, who was bought up in a single parent family, and had to work hard to get where he got,and I think he did well for himself...if you don't mind me saying so. Liverpool can be a tough place to live ,
