The Good Old Days (To be "Only The Young" again)

Saw this clip and wished I had a time machine. The 80's and seeing Journey live was a great time.

Also, with Augeri:

With JSS:

With Jeremey:

and the original track (not original vid):

After watching this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf9de0uYuXU

I cannot blame Frigga and Fro for hiring Augeri. It was better than having no Journey at all. Let's face it - they waited over two years for Perry to plan a tour for TBF. We all wanted Journey to do something, and they did. It wasn't Perry, but it did have its good moments.

It's really too bad that we won't get to see Jeremey with Journey:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38_LQBbFfo8

Jeremey has the look and the sound that could have brought back the Perry feel to the band... much more than Augeri, JSS, or Arnel could have. Jeremey has the Perry-ish passion and energy... that's a fact. I just don't understand the logic they are using. I could have supported this version of Journey.

I'm noticing that JH sometimes sings too much "in the back of the throat", some remark this as "shrill"ing, etc. Man, if you listen to alot of JH, he seems very inconsistant in his Journey singing. Perhaps he's performing too much?

Check out Augeri singing "Any Way You Want It":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XWM6xRQ3Ns

The only way it can get better than that is with Perry singing. Augeri had the goods.

He's as good as Augeri or better IMO, and he sounds more like Perry than JSS does. I think he has much more soul and depth than Arnel does, and more passion. Let's face it, the politics wouldn't let it happen. Our loss.

Steve Augeri sounded absolutely great on that clip. Very melodic.

I've heard nobody sing Journey as close to the way Perry sang it as J does, except maybe Jason Kelty. Obviously, Journey thought so, too.

I never noticed that. I think I hear it at 00:39. Or is it Perry's backing vox?

I thought it was Deen. :?

Love it, my second favorite Journey song after Still They Ride. :D After watching those, I still maintain Perry and JSS were the best thing to happen to Journey, the 2 most unique and powerful vocalists/frontmen. :(

Jeremey's voice sounds thin in this clip, almost tin like.

Nothing against the man himself, but Jeff has a lot more depth to his voice, it is stronger.

And Augeri STILL sounds to me like he was always hoarse.

I suspect it was Deen. Deen had to help Jeff on a lot of the high parts.

Yeah. It's almost a voice between head and falsetto.

He's a really good singer, but I'm not crazy about the "throat/sinus/falsetto thing.

And here is Augeri in 1998..in his "prime" with Journey. He misses note after note after note. And the ones he does hit are all flat. There were better guys out there, they just chose not to look hard enough.

Augeri could not hit "with every heart beat" or "ask the lonely" in that 98 clip. Too much for his range.

Always straining, and always sounded hoarse. Never sounded comfortable and in control of the songs.

To be fair, Soto strained on "generation" in that short clip. You can't hear him in the chorus as he's blended in to know if he hit the notes or not.

I don't know who wouldn't. I'd wind up shitting myself trying to hit that note.

Look? He's just an average looking guy to me. He looks a bit like one country singer whose name escapes me. He's in one of the Fruit Of The Loom commercials. Sound? He's too shrill and pushes so hard he almost grunts. Passion and energy? I don't feel it. Sorry.

From my understanding Jeff did not require help on songs in any way. Deen contributed on Dead or Alive, improvising if you will. Jeff could have and would have sang the entire set if required.

I'm fairly sure, but not positive, that he needed help on the high parts. I actually saw Deen come in on high parts at shows, but as Larry said, that could just be him complimenting Jeff.

If I'm not mistaken, Jeff sang Dead or Alive at the concert I was at - I remember thinking, wow - they are doing some different songs!
