OT: Anyone Having Internet Explorer Problems?

Last Tuesday, I downloaded the newest security and OS updates from Microsoft. After they were installed, I was having problems getting onto many of my websites such as ebay and a few others. After a little swearing, I decided to look up what updates I installed, and sure enough, I found one for Internet Explorer. I went to my Add/Remove programs and uninstalled it and the problem went away. Easy enough.... What I didn't think about was many of my friends and family also updated their computers and of course, I got all the phone calls

Also, what they kinda forget to put in the article, is the number that MOST of the users out there would see. It's the update number that is most visible: KB942615.

BEFORE you click the 2 links below this, please read this part: I don't know why Microsoft bothers to give instructions to people to go into their registry to fix this problem. It was as easy as unstalling ANY OTHER PROGRAM from the Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

Open the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. On the top part of that box, you'll see an option that says, "Show Updates". Place a check in it and then wait for XP to load everything. The update you're looking for in XP is KB942615. Click on it, and then Uninstall it. Restart the computer

OK.... you've been warned. Now you can click these links. One gives a small explaination of the update, and the other informs the user how to EDIT THE REGISTRY to fix it, which I'd NEVER recommend to anyone who may not be computer-smart

And of course, here come the people who'll want to crab about Microsoft and Internet Explorer. If you use something else... That's fine. I put this thread here to help anyone who may be having a problem with their Internet Explorer and also using Windows XP

It's not a Bill Gates problem. It was a patch that MS released BEFORE they thoroughly tested it. Quite honestly, in all the years I've had XP, I can only remember 2 other times that I've had a security patch or OS patch that was goofy.

Wow, consider yourself lucky then. Everytime Microsoft would send down an update, it would screw up our company email.

Try to get onto ebay. I have the ebay link saved in My Favorites, and when I'd click on it, it would make IE close. If I typed it in, I could get to the site, and then it would error on me a couple of pages later

I haven't had any problems but, then again, I do 90% of my web surfing on Opera, about 5% on Mozilla Firefox, and 5% on IE. IE is terribly slow compared to the other two, especially Opera. Both are far better browsers.

I seem to be in a minority of people not so hopped up on downloading every security update on a non-public machine. I've seen way too many working systems not boot back up, or experience problems afterwards, to take that risk regularly. Plus, I'm highly skeptical of Microsoft's trustworthiness with my system anyway, as Windows Update has been responsible for supposedly "critical updates" such as Windows Genuine Advantage (MS spyware, phones home to report on the validity of your stuff), and the new MS Search (their version apparently of Google Desktop). No, thank ye!

Agreed. Opera and Firefox are leagues better than IE (we are talking about Iced Earth right?).

Seriously though I tend to use Firefox more although I am veering toward Opera. Avant is also very good.

Sorry it took so long to get back. I tried ebay and got there fine. I don't have a link to it though, I just typed in www.ebay.com and it worked fine. I haven't any problems with any of the links I do have in my favorites though, and that includes a wide range of places from music boards to financial management sites.

The easiest fix is to stop using IE. Either Firefox or Opera will work. Not the mention the fact that those two browsers are much faster than IE. Heck, you can even customize Firefox to make it even quicker than its default settings.

No offense intended, Monker. The subject just brought up the obvious debate.

CPC, It's been several years since I tried Opera, but keep hearing good things about it, and think I will give it another shot. I'm currently using Firefox 98% of the time, and IE only when absolutely necessary.

I did read just this morning that Opera has just about the fastest 3rd-party browser for smart phones, and also the only cross-platform browser for people wanting a unique interface between phones. I was using an iPaq until just recently, and while I love my new Samsung Blackjack, browsing in its version of IE is way much more of a pain compared to the iPaq, in which I at least could scroll long pages. It's just about killed my browsing of MR.com forums on the Blackjack during lunch. I think I'm going to try Opera on it, as well as on my PC.

Was IE just randomly shutting down? I have been having that problem and even did an update AFTER it started.

Just some websites would cause IE to crash for some reason. ESPN was one of them I heard. Ebay did for me... EVERY TIME. No problems now after uninstalling that update.

There was no debate to begin with. It was a thread to help people that may have problems with their Internet Explorer after the last batch of updates. Never anywhere did I say ANYTHING about Firefox, Opera, or any other sort of browser.

I just tried ESPN and still no problem T-Bone. Maybe there was something on your computer that wasn't on mine that caused the problem. Could it be something as simple as a particular cookie or temp file that wasn't compatible? I'm techno challenged so I have no idea.

The problem mainly happened with Internet Explorer 6. If you're using 7, that may be the difference

I don't generally have IE problems.....because I use firefox. I won't preach it...everyone's heard the schpeel about it...but it works good.

Well, I am sorry to say the work-around did not fix my problem with IE shutting down. Mine is very random - there doesn't seem to be a pattern to it at all. Not even sure how to LOOK for help with that one.
