Saint John's and Tito's Review of Revelation

Postby Tito » Tue Jun 10, 2008 7:35 am

It took awhile, but the long-awaited review is finally here.

Never Walk Away - Great opener and just an outstanding song with a catchy chorus. Soto departure pays dividends right away. Upon Soto being "sent away", Jeremey Hunsicker was brought in and during his audition he helped co-write this fine song.

Like A Sunshower – Another great song that could’ve been off the Infinity album. Not sure who they’re talking about, but somebody sure cares and stood their ground – as this line is used in the first two songs. Tito says, “When I first heard the title of this song and the sample, I was embarrassed. However, after hearing it, this has already become one of my favorite songs on the CD. I like the verses more than chorus.”

Change For the Better – Starts off with Van Hagar sounding riff. Cool keyboard in throughout the song as well. A very uplifting and inspirational song.

Wildest Dreams – Hard rocking song. Tito says, “I wasn’t sold on this at first when I saw it on youtube. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. With all the jamming towards the end, I had to ask myself, “Who are these fuckin’ guys?”

Faith in The Heartland – As with most, we questioned why redo this song. Cain said in the Rockline interview (paraphrasing) that Shirley thought they missed on it and wanted to take a stab at it. “If they wanted to take another shot at a Generations track, I would’ve like to seen them go at Better Life,” said Tito. However, they do a good job on this song. No material changes. It’s good song, one of the better off of Generations, but on Revelation it’s on the lower end of the food chain here. However, this could be a potential breakout song if one of the Presidential candidates decides to use it as a theme song. Can you hear us, Barack Obama? This may be your ticket to the middle-aged, working class honkies.

After All These Years – Another possible breakout song. It could be the newest addition to the soundtrack of peoples' lives. Get this song played at anything wedding anniversaries. It’s a great ballad, one of their best. Homerun for Jon Cain.

Where Did I Lose Your Love – One word: WOW! This may be their best song in over 22 years. Instant classic.

What I Needed – If fans ever wanted to know what Kevin Chalfant would sound like in Journey, listen to the chorus of this song, it’s totally Chalfant. A great dark sounding ballad. There it is again, not exact but close enough, “You cared enough and you stood strong.”

What It Takes To Win – A Linkin Park sounding intro starts this gem off. Very modern sounding. I don’t mean to overuse this word, but this great. Again, another possible breakout. Tito explains, “This pains me as a White Sox fan to say this, but if the Cubs make it to the post season (and go all the way), this would be a great theme song for the Cubs." “When you learn to lose, you’ll know what it takes to win.” If the Cubs win it all, it will be one of the biggest, if not biggest moments in sports history. If they can get this song attached to that, look out.” We hope Azoff is getting these songs (FITH, AATY, and WITTW in the appropriate hands). Although used in a different context, there’s (part of) that line again, “Stand your ground.”

Turn Down The World Tonight – Outstanding (how many times can we say this word also) ballad. Very powerful vocals. Since a lot of people will skip the final instrumental, this is a great closer. Cain outdoes himself again.

The Journey (Revelation) – Nice instrumental. Tito says, "I like how they incorporate a couple of old songs in it. A slowed down Better Life solo early in the song and a little bit of Lady Luck, right as Deen comes in."

The Re-Records:
The best - Only The Young, Wheel In The Sky, Who’s Crying Now, and better than the originals - Lights and Open Arms. We will admit; we’re not that crazy about some of the background vocals. But, good enough job.

Overall, they outdid themselves big time. We have to say, this is their best work since ROR and maybe even Frontiers. Neal and Jon proved they are great songwriters, they’re not missing anything. Arnel is the real deal, Ross’s bass never sounded any better, and they finally let Deen loose and let him show his strength.

In the liner notes, we find out who was standing their ground – Lori. Good job. Also, Neal thanks PAST (read again Soto fans, to a lesser extent Perry fans, and to an even lesser extent Augeri fans) band members. He continues, “You are not forgotten and go on being appreciated” (translated for Soto fans, Thank you! But, our lawyers won’t let us say anything. Perry - pick up the fuckin’ phone). Deen sends out a shout out to Steve Augeri as well. The band members take time to also thank each other. These are good people.

The legacy sound is back with a bit of a modern twist at times. But why mess with a winning formula that is timeless. Some would say this is paint by numbers, we totally disagree. They painted, but what they painted was a masterpiece. Two thumbs up.

Overall Grade - 97.5

That is an interpretation that you are making. You have no knowledge he was addressing Soto, his fans or anyone else. I personally think it was more directed towards Perry exclusively. I don't think he gives a rats ass about SA or JSS. My opinion only.

Nice review guys.
This album is THAT GOOD!

But I disagree w/ your assessment or "translation" of Neal's comments.
He coulda gave some specific thanks to guys like Sotot and Augeri.
Lawyers had nothing to do w/ it.
Deen gave a specific shout out to Augeri...

I could care less either way.
I just wanted to shoot holes in your theory

BTW,
Does anyone think that, after readin Neal's liner notes and
reading his recent interviews on his sobriety, CFTB of WIN
are 2 of the most personal songs Neal has written in a while?
Welcome to Terminus... You hungry?

Agreed. I think this album was a means of therapeutic reinforcement for the 3 people in the band that are in recovery (Arnel, Deen and Neal). Best of luck to all 3 them. 8)

I agree they are not "good people" More like greedy people. Nice Cd out. If things go wrong Arnel will be dumped in a a heartbeat. Tito, You know nothing at all about these so called "good people" They are a business and will fire and replace anyone that cant do there job,the next night, and dont think they dont have a replacement {just in case} They did it 2 years ago.The only "good" about these "people" is there music, nothing else. Loyality, honesty,is not in there vocabulary. great musicians, dont set yourself up to be let down. Not "good people" Why else would I have a gay Friga as my Aviatar.

I have been a memeber for a good while, but very rarely do I post. I have to absolutely agree with the fact that these are not what I would consider good people or loyal bandmates. I have really struggled with my support of this band since they dumped Augeri like they did. I was never a fan of Soto's vocals, but they really treated him poorly as well. Like them or not...Def Leppard is a great example of what a true band should be. They are loyal to the core, and would never treat one of their bandmates like Journey has treated theirs. This is not a statement about musical taste...it's about sticking by your mates when they are down.

That being said, I do think the new album is decent. It is not however anywhere close to anything from the Perry era...no matter how much people want it to be. The re-recordings fall very short in my opinion...I enjoyed the Chalfant versions much better. I think Arnel has a great voice, and I am sure this is an exciting opportunity for him...he had just better hope that his voice holds out, or he will be tossed aside like the others.

Don't know about RV or DC but I doubt Jon or Neal considered Augeri or Soto "bandmates" at any point. Hired guns is as far as I'd go. The 2001 DVD shows hardly any chemistry 'tween SA and the others. Surprised they stuck with him when his voice faltered. Maybe stuck with him is the wrong assessment here.

Anyway, it was weird to grab Soto, announce him "official", only to dump him just as quick. Maybe KC turned them down IF he was offered to save the tour?

Steve A was was a real member of the band for 8 years ,weither neal or friga liked it after 2 years is a debate.Im sure they made Soto "official" so he would be accepted ASAP. They cover there ass,and try to make things look good.Again I love themusic, but the band personally sucks

I totally agree, if something does go wrong with Arnel, he will and should be replaced. You are correct, they are a business and they will and should replace anyone that can't do there job as any business would do. At least they would be replaced because of just cause and not by one man's opinion i.e. Smith and Valory firings. You are probably correct, that they have a replacement in my mind if they need one. Like I said a few weeks ago, the Chicago Bulls former G.M. Jerry Krause said years ago, every G.M. has an oh shit list. If something unexpected happens, you have a list of people you can go to. Most big companies have that. This is a smart move on their part. I think they were loyal to their singers by waiting for Perry all those years and sticking with Augeri, when he wasn't up to par. If it wasn't for some on this board, who exacerbated the situation, Augeri may still be the singer. I keep it real, I won't be let down regardless of what may or may not happen with this band. Level headed.

I don't know why you have a gay Friga (it's Cain) as your avatar. That's something you have to ask yourself. Maybe it's lack of respect or class. Maybe guilty conscience. I don't know.

They had no choice in the Augeri situation. He wasn't fired right away. They put him on the D.L., apparently he did not get better, so they may a change. Even if he did, considering how much abuse he took on this board, how could they go back to him. How do we know how they treated Soto? Were we there? From this outside observer, I think they treated Soto well and did wonders for his career.

I disagree with Def Leppard. They replaced one guitarist, Pete Willis, and were probably ready to replace Steve Clark. If Rick Allen wouldn't have made that remarkable recovery, they probably would've continued without him too.

Good people??? WTF...They are complete fuckin lyin assholes...I would rather eat my own fuckin turd than have a conversation with those two, cause all you'd ever get was shit. All that ever comes out of them is bullshit.
And he (one of the assholes) has the fuckin audacity to ask why Perry won't pick up his phone and talk to him.

Great music, great album, oh and great review apart from that bit in the last paragraph.

sorry my post would go thru, to complete my point, no one here was to blame for Augeri lipping and the band encouraging it.If they took a break in 2003 Augeri might have still been the singer but i Doubt it.You maybe level headed, or you just dont give a fuck who sings or plays in the band I do.I followed these fuckers arounf for four years cause I like the music that much .Friga call the people that exposed the truth hear a bunch of drunks..Thats another reason for the gay Friga
