A Thank You to Journey...My Story

Hey everyone, I have a story I really feel that I need to share regarding how much Journey can affect our lives.

This is my first post here…I’ve been reading this board for years, but really never have anything of value to add, so I just lurk.

I’m a 31 y.o. guy and have been a huge Journey fan since high school, unfortunately too young to remember their glory days. I’ve seen the band 4 times with Augeri, and will be seeing them again this summer.

A few months ago I began talking to a girl who I subsequently developed a bond with. She is my age and also a huge Journey fan. On our first date, DSB came across in the background, and when I mentioned the song to her, we really began to connect.

Fast forward to the week that Revelations was released. We listened to the album on the way to dinner, commenting on how great it is. After dinner and drinks, we had a 30 minute drive back to her place. She put her arm around mine and held my hand before falling asleep on my shoulder. As we pulled into her driveway she awakens as Turn Down the World Tonight was playing. At that moment we shared a kiss that I think will stay with me forever. It was one of the sweetest, most affectionate moments of my life. Talk about being caught up in the moment!! And for once, I could claim a Journey song as my own. Perfect song. Perfect lyrics. Perfect moment.

Unfortunately, I knew things were only short term. She had to move away last week due to her job. My heart still hurts, knowing that it wasn’t meant to be. I still have trouble listening to that song, because the lyrics were hauntingly prophetic. On a happier note, we will be seeing Journey together later this summer.

I know some of the band lurks here on occasion, so if they read this, I just want to say, thank you Journey, for being a part of my life. Neal, Jon, Ross, Deen…you guys still have it after all these years (stupid pun intended). Arnel, thanks for bringing it all to life.

Flame away, if you will. Call me a pussy if you have to. Just know that Journey connects with a lot of people in very deep and meaningful ways, and that is the reason I think most of you probably post here. Think about that. And thanks for letting me share my story. Peace.

Sorry to hear the girl is moving away. Might outta try to keep that one. I've been married 3 times and none of my wives liked my music. That shouldn't be an issue, and it really isn't, but music is a very big part of my life.

My first concert, ever was the '81 Journey Escape tour show. I had a date with me that was way out of my league, but you couldn't have asked for a better night. 10 years or so later, an old voice from the past called telling me about that girls death from an overdose. Another 10 years later, I'm driving down the highway with my daughter in the car, and Open Arms came on the radio. For some reason that girls memory flooded my mind and I just started crying like a baby. My daughter was probably 8 at the time, didn't know what the hell was going on.

Music is a very powerful thing, and if you've found someone that enjoys the same music you do, that's really pretty special. Especially a band like Journey. People just love to hate Journey. My wife says if she never hears another Journey song, it'll be too soon. And I can't listen to her music. Country. UGH!

Think about sinking some claws into that girl and keeping her. There are jobs in every city.

My first concert was seeing Journey open for the Stones at JFK in 81. As soon as I made it known I was there for the Journey show (NOT VERY SMART ON MY PART), People really let have it and not in a good way either. I got to see them later that year at the Spectrum. I was in seats behind the stage with my back to the wall but since perry spends half the show facing that way it was all good and we could pass the toke around back there with no hassles from security

I was 14 when I went to that Stones show in 81 so i'm not that old
I think being outside all the time when I was S.OPS in the service might have been pretty good for me, not to mention I spent 6 years in Asia and eating the local food may have helped (I mean look at Arnel, the guy looks like a stripling next to the other guys in the band and he's a little older then me), Oh and good genes from my parents

It's funny you mention how music can mean so much in our lives. My buddy always jokes that for a girl to pass my litmus test, that she would have to like Journey. Must be some truth to that. I think the fact we had the same passion in music (and ironically, baseball) gave me a lot of courage with her at first, because she is really out of my league.

And you all are right about the distance thing. Maybe I shouldn't make it an issue, she's only a few hours away. Plus we both have really good jobs that would give us the freedom (time and money) to probably see each other somewhat often.

This is making me feel better. Maybe it's not over. To quote the great Belushi, 'Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?'
