Nike considering Arnel and JOURNEY.

Postby Dzaek » Wed Aug 13, 2008 6:46 am

Just Do It Nike....

Had a small talk with Nike rep today, 0235hrs HKG time and gave the headsup about considering this concept of putting a Swoosh (Tom's term) on Arnel, and possibly the band. Good to know that some folks at Nike are updated and followers of JOURNEY.
Note: Had to delete Rep's name from original e-mail for privacy protection. cheers!

Hi Jack,

It is great to know that you are a fan of Nike and a huge fan of Journey. Arnel Pineda is awesome as a replacement for Steve Perry and I think the come back for Journey is going to do well with Arnel as the front man.

I have passed along your comments to our feedback data base for Nike departments to review. If their is any interest, Nike will be in contact with the band for more information.

Sounds like Arnel and Journey will be welcomed with "Open Arms" every where their tour hits on this road trip. Look forward to catching a show.

Take care!

Sincerely,

Nike

I saw a similar thread on the Journey official site and to be honest, I find it silly. Most of Nike's endorsers are big time athletes and Arnel isn't. Besides, any efforts to find a person to endorse a product should be done by Nike themselves and not the person much less a third party. Don't get me wrong dude, I am a big Arnel fan and I will be thrilled if he can get product endorsements. It just that I don't think this is the fans' business.

With all due respect, I don't take "If their is any interest" to mean this is actually being considered. It sounds like a basic reply that goes out, with the exception of the personal comments at the beginning.

I believe this has got to do with AP's jumping and turning antics on stage. probably he'll be endorsing the casual line of Nike. don't get me wrong, those kicks are comfortable to wear and look darn good at the same time.

He may not be a big time athlete, mdaemon...but for sure he could be a serious contender for the high jump category in rock concert history! You definitely need a high quality pair of shoes to support that kind of activity! His hips and leg/foot joints need to hold up! There you go! That's the shoe connection rationale, guys!

I can see it benefiting Arnel. As for Nike, I'm not sure what value Arnel can bring to them,

I'd like to see Arnel get all that he can out of this. He's a shoe-in for a toothpaste ad. What a genuine smile.

I can't picture a bunch of older guys, with the youngest one being 40, as the target demographic for Nike these days. Ross and Friga are pushing 60.

Heck, I've seen plenty of bag ladies with used and abused tennis shoes on their feet.

Well...don't you think some people who go to Journey concerts, especially the younger fans, could be potential shoe customers? Much the same way as RIP has been promoting Arnel t-shirts! That's what they call niche marketing---not really a huge market, but a new incremental market. :D

(I actually say all these things tongue in cheek...but maybe, just maybe...there's something here...)

Absolutely! I think it's cool, and it is amazingly similar to another idea I heard recently. It will be interesting to see what happens for Arnel, for sure.

They do! It is tough to look younger; so an option is to simply dress younger! It could be cheaper, too.

Alright! That photochop of him at the net with a basketball in one hand and the mic in the other really paid off. Good on you!

Yeah but Arnel does what most those others can't do, jump about twice his actual height, at least that is what it apears he is doing.

Actually its the job of their agent/manager to initiate and strike those deals. As cool of a concept as it may sound, I doubt AP has the name recognition that a brand like Nike would require.

All the younger kids who loves Journey and Arnel will need to go out and purchase the same brand that Arnel is jumping around on stage in. How many is that? A signature set of Nike's, much like that $75 dollar bottle of wine some months back with all the Journey member's signature on it that someone was peddling on this site. Guaranteed that there will be products with Arnel's signature on them, primarily in the Philippines I think though.

Your explanation does not make sense. I know you love Arnel to bits but this is really silly. Arnel is not an athlete and as Onestepper pointed out, does not have the name recognition a big time brand would require.
