Then Howard says when he was a DJ in 1980 Journey came into the studio and Perry called him Big Bird-Howard and his guys says SP is the biggest douche theyve ever met....

Stern never questioned Perrys talent-in fact praised it but said he was the biggest asshole hes met. Said the whole band thought so even back in the glory days. I dont claim to be a die hard Stern fan. I listen to different shit every morning, mostly ESPN radio in my office. But sometimes Ill leave Stern on if hes got an interesting guest. That shit is funny ...

Very true!!! It'll entertain you when your in the office. Thats exactly what Stern said also, it was back in 1980. They did say if perry would quit being such a douchebag and Journey would get back together with him it would be a phenomenol money making tour. Also said Journey has a "Beatles-esque" fan base and many are very devoted and rabid....which is why they still pack 30,000 people in a venue with a new singer...

Yeah, he's told the Perry story before. Two things I remember him saying (when he was on terrestrial radio) was:

1 - Stern had to introduce the band on stage one night and was surprised to see Perry walk out of the trailer with a smoking hot blond on his side (Sherrie, I'm guessing).

2 - There's a scene in his movie where someone in the studio (another DJ?) is calling him Big Bird, or something like that. It was the Perry incident that influenced the scene.

At the time perry(or anyone else for that matter) even knew who Howard Stern was. He was a newcomer and an unknown. I'm sure perry is a nice enough guy these days maybe, of course according to Schon he still has issues but there have been countless stories from the 80's that suggests he was a major jerk, even stories from the band themselves. Now none of this diminishes the fact that he is/was/always will be the man and probably the greatest voice of our generation and I would be the first to purchase a Perry concert ticket-whether with Journey or by himself. I just found it interesting that Howard went on about a 10-15 minute talk about Journey. And by the way-he had nothing but good things to say about Arnel and his talent. He joked about Arnel wanting to go home and the band not letting him....

We can only guess at what some of those things might be.. I would guess that the line between being a jerk and being protective could become blurry very easily. Some people just dont hit it off. Hell, I dont know but it obviously bothered Howard. Nearly 30 years later he still talks about it and included a version of it in his movie. Gotta remember-at the time Howard was not a celebrity. I dont think he had gotten into the radio personality that hes used since....

After the break we heard a prank call that Sal and Richard made to a woman where they kept asking how she was doing. Fred played some Led Zeppelin ''Kashmir'' as they were coming back. Howard said that was one of the greatest songs ever made.

That led to some discussions about some other bands and Journey came up. Howard said that they have a guy who sings like Steve Perry and he was complaining that they wouldn't let him go home. Howard read an article about the guy and how he's only doing the job for his family. He apparently cries a lot thinking about the whole thing. He said it's actually a curse that he sounds like Steve Perry.

Artie said that he knows what the guy is complaining about. He said that he's been to just about every major city in the United States and he's only seen a lot of hotels.

Fred played some Journey and Howard talked about what a douche Steve Perry was when he met him. Fred agreed with him on that. Fred also said that he was such an asshole that the rest of the band refused to work with him. Howard said that in his movie they had a DJ who called him Big Bird. It was actually Steve Perry who called him Big Bird.

Howard said that Journey was huge in Detroit when he was there and it was a big deal to get Steve Perry on his show. Howard said that Brian Phelan went to see Journey recently and there were 30,000 people at the concert.

Howard went on to say that back in about 1980 he was working at WWWW and Steve Perry was going to be on his show. He asked his program director who the Big Bird looking guy was. Howard said he heard that and wanted to unload on Perry on the air. He said that he knew that he'd get his chance to do that some day.

Howard said that he got to introduce the band on stage at a show they were doing and Perry was making out with the hottest blonde he'd ever seen. Howard said that motherfucker was goofing on him and making out with the hottest chick ever. Howard played the ''Suck My Dick'' song and dedicated it to Steve Perry.

Howard said that they had some audio of this singer that's with the band Journey now. It was a report about the band coming back with that guy and the guy really does sound as good as Steve Perry. In the clip the singer has a heavy accent when he's talking but his singing is amazingly clear. The guy is from the Philippines.

Goodnesss people; the truth of the matter is that sure there were plenty of times when Mr. Perry was a lot less than this angelic creature some people characterize him to be; and surely most know that Mr. Stern has always been the man others like to hate and love to debate. Both are probably a little more and a little less than you think they should be. Painting someone with a broad stroke of the brush only makes the canvas and picture distorted. I'm sure each and every one of us at one time or another could be characterized as a "jerk" or Sesame Street or Charlie Brown character. Still, Howard did a very funny interview with McCartney once. It was one of the few Paul interviews where there were actually different questions being asked than the typical interviewer.
