How would you pronounce this child's name: "Le-a"
Leah?? NO
Lee - A?? NOPE
Lay - a?? NO
Lei?? Guess Again.
It's pronounced "Ledasha" Oh yes...you read it right.
This child attends a school in Livingston Parish, LA. Her mother is
irate because everyone is getting her name wrong. SO, if you see
something come across your desk like this please remember to
pronounce it correctly. When the mother was asked about the
pronunciation of the name, she said "the dash don't be silent."

This is a real problem for teachers. When we call roll we get all kinds of spelling. The parents need to understand if you name your child an untraditional name, no one is going to pronounce it right till they learn it. You have 30 students to a room. Many with unusual names. You may have 5 periods a day with 30 students per class. The classes may change every year. You remember all those names, it isn't easy.![]()

My first name is very easy, but that didn't help the teachers.
Whenever there was a long pause in the roll call, it was me!!!
Surnames can be just as difficult to pronounce and are not easily changed!!
I love unique names.....just not stupid ones!!

"The dash don't be silent"???? Sounds like mom needs to go back to school herself and learn how to speak AMERICAN ENGLISH.

What makes it even weirder, parents mix names together and expect you to pronounce it. Anfrony, easy. Shereather. Xay, Shadonna, Sharonica, and these are the easy ones! LOL! The parent needs to understand a dash is a symbol not part of a spelling of a name. She should expect that most people would be unfamiliar with how to pronounce it on site. She should not get all put out. But this is what teachers put up with all the time.![]()

I've got an even better idea than that...we should all pitch in and build a school just for students with hard-to-pronounce names. That way they wouldn't feel neglected, or ridiculed. They could build it right between the school for homosexual students, and the other school for the fat kids. We'd just have to make sure that we had separate buses pick them up and drop them off...wouldn't want them to get picked on on the bus.
