My grandparents didn't celebrate Christmas, because it wasn't actually known that Jesus was born on that day, so they thought it would be presumptuous and insulting to guess. They didn't embrace Santa Claus because Christmas is supposed to be about celebrating Jesus, not Saint Nick. I understand their stance and reasoning, but that's way over the top in my books.
That is strange, most Church of christ people I know celebrate christmas, but just not as Christ's birthday. The reasoning for not celebrating it as his birthday is because that is not necessarily the day he was born.
They look at it as a fun holiday,Santa included. Don't know what kind of group you grew up in! That is not the norm around here. Don't label the whole by a few.
Sorry you had such a tough childhood.
