OT:Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Evans dead

Postby Blueskies » Sat May 09, 2009 3:01 am

Cancer gets another....only 48 years old.....RIP...

Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist 'Ean' Evans dead at 48
COLUMBUS, Miss. – Bassist Donald "Ean" Evans of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd has died after a battle with cancer.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said Evans died Wednesday at his home in eastern Mississippi. He was 48.

In a statement posted on lynyrdskynyrd.com the band said, "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of longtime Lynyrd Skynyrd bassist Ean Evans. Ean put up a valiant battle with an aggressive form of cancer and he will be sorely missed by family, friends and fans."

Evans was born in Atlanta, but moved to Columbus after marrying his wife, Eva. He joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 2001 and had been touring regularly with the band until being diagnosed with cancer in 2008, when he cut back on performances with the band.

Survivors include his wife and two daughters.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

"He was just one of those guys who was always a dreamer and always seeing ahead. And he was the most positive person I've ever met," Mike Chain, a guitarist who was close friends with Evans, told The Commercial Dispatch in Columbus, Miss.

The Jacksonville-based band was formed in 1966 by a group of high school students — famously, it took its name from a physical education teacher they disliked, Leonard Skinner.

They released their first album, "Pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd." It became one of the South's most popular rock groups and gained national fame with such hits as "Free Bird," "What's Your Name" and especially "Sweet Home Alabama," which reached the top 10 on the charts in 1974. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

The band suffered a tragic loss on Oct. 20, 1977, when their chartered plane crashed in a swamp near McComb, Miss. The crash claimed the lives of six people, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Keyboard player Billy Powell survived the plane crash that killed three band members. He died in January.

In 2001, bassist Leon Wilkeson died in his sleep in a hotel room near Jacksonville, Fla., and Chain said he was with Evans the night he got hired by the band.

"We were spending New Year's Eve together when this Skynyrd thing was happening," Chain said. "It didn't look like it was going to happen. But he just set his feet in the ground ... and was ready to stand up and fly to the moon. And he did."

These guys might have the worst luck of any band. So much tragedy/death, way too young and soon.

What a very uncool, insensitive thing to post in a death announcement thread. What the heck is wrong with you? Who cares? Only family, band members, friends and fans.

Whether you love or hate the group, Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird are two of the most recognizable songs in Rock. It has almost becomes second nature to mimic Ronnie Van Zant and utter "Turn it up" as soon as the first few notes of Sweet Home Alabama start playing on the radio.

Exactly! I'm not a huge fan of the band but I do like some of the tunes and they made a big name for themselves in rock music. I've never been to one of their concerts...I had tickets to go see them once and the plane crash happened before the concert...it was very sad....Blue Oyster Cult came to play in their place but I didn't feel like going to a concert at that point. The band members and their families sure have went through more than their fair share of tragedy. Godspeed, Donald ( Ean ) Evans.

Common sense should have dictated that it would have been more appropriate to just not comment at all then rather then say something disrespectful . Who cares if you like Skynyrd music or not, the music isn't at issue here so thats not the point...the point is that a man died yesterday and it was an insensitive thing to say when there are people that do care and are saddened by his passing.

I'll leave this all here so you can read carefully. If you notice I said NOTHING about the dead guy. I responded to the question of who was left in the band. And I think it's up to ME, not YOU to decide what I do and do not respond to, whether you think it's tactful or not. Pick your battles carefully...thanks.

I started this thread to announce a death so pick your battles more carefully.. this thread was certainly not the place for you to express your distaste of a band. There is a time and place for everything and this thread was certainly not the place for that. If you can't stand the bands music then start your own thread and express that all you want but this thread is not about that. Or just go back to the b*tching thread..you know the one where you have been "venting" about how people act so inappropriately and leave this one for expression of a loss of a man from the music community....thanks.

Someone should point out the error of your ways since you are acting so inappropriately and since I started this thread then I am justified in doing so...you have been disrespectful,..and not only to the thread topic. I might also point out that I am not the one who has been " venting" about inconsequential nonsense in another thread....some trivial things that you should have just let go of instead of harboring them inside. It's obvious that you enjoy repeating the tales out of pride for you, yourself having and exhibiting a bad attitude in kind with people that you complain of... so that hobby is yours. You would have been less exposed if you had simply retracted and let it go in this thread instead of bearing your claws fully because you can't handle any criticism of your actions....yet you continue to exhibit inappropriate behavior. Try to have a better day...at least give it a shot, because life isn't all that bad to carry such a negative attitude. It's better to look on the bright side of things rather then to dwell so much on the negative...you are how you think so try to think more positively.....something that Ean Evans tried to do in his life. :)

This is a thread to give condolences of a death not for you or her to come in to "b*tch. Why don't YOU let Andrew monitor it instead of telling me I don't have the same right to express my views on a matter if I wish to. You said yourself that people " argue" here so it's a contradiction to say that and then proceed to tell me I don't have the same right to do so . If you say something and I disagree with it how is that any different then when you express a disagreement with someone? When you do ( and you know you have) have I been rude enough to come in and call you names and tell you that you aren't allowed to disagree with anyone on here and express it because you are ruining all my " fun"? Are you Andrew? Give me a break..if you, she or anyone else doesn't want or can't handle anyone disagreeing with them then you shouldn't post here.

WTF are you rambling about?! It was ASKED to share stories in that thread. Sorry YOUR life is so boring you have to BITCH about what can and can't be talked about or opinions given on a message board . Jesus, bitch, get a life!

By your self righteous little censorship crusade you have totally derailed your own sappy thread into something no one would have thought twice about if you would have just let me have my opinion and shut your cakehole and moved on.

Nice job.

hypocrite blueskies says: "Why don't YOU let Andrew monitor it instead of telling me I don't have the same right to express my views on a matter if I wish to"

and THEN:

"Give me a break..if you, she or anyone else doesn't want or can't handle anyone disagreeing with them then you shouldn't post here"

LMFAO!!! Whoo POT!! You go!

Okay. How's this sound? Whenever you start a thread, Angie, myself and everyone else will stay out of it and let you argue with yourself. But I'm sure that wouldn't keep you from entering threads started by others and "pointing out the error of their ways."

 I'm not the one that entered a death announcement thread to blast my hatred of a band inappropriately, now was I.

No, but you were the first and only one to bitch about it, but hey don't let it worry you. Everyone needs a hobby.

Nice job.

You're right, leave it to ANDREW.

I lead a happy life because I don't go around saying obnoxious comments to people I work with or to customers of any place I have worked. I'm not the one on here b*tching about what some customer may have said sometime in the past and then conveying how said something b*tchy to them in return. Nor am I the one b*tching about a bands music instead of simply being respectful enough to express a condolence for a mans death, either.

Sappy thread? Sorry, if a guys death is too "sappy" for you!
You could have moved on after I disagreed with what you said in the start instead of getting overly defensive about it, couldn't you. You also could have simply said, yes it was not appropriate to bash on a band in this thread when it is about an individuals death. I hope you wouldn't do that in public elsewhere....my gosh, I hope that if someone that was part of a band that you didn't like in your town were to die that you wouldn't drive past the funeral home and yell out that the band sucks to the morners.
