Kevin Chalfant singing "Separate Ways" live, 2009!

Postby G.I.Jim » Sat Jul 11, 2009 8:39 am

Just thought I'd post this after I stumbled on it. He really sounds AMAZING (and so does the backing band!), but unfortunately this clip is barely listenable. The quality is shitty as hell! :x You can still hear enough though to tell that he kicked ASS on it. :D He did skate around the highest note of the song, but considering his age...I'll excuse him for it.

Here it is...

I'm now going on a hunt to see if I can find a better quality recording. Whoever recorded that needs their ass kicked!

That was just me...sorry!  I can't find any other recording from that show, but how about I just post the best song he ever sang on?

Here's The Storm's "Show Me The Way". This sounds so much like Journey that it's just scary!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKj9Xr1m ... re=related

While we're on the subject of The Storm, I HAVE to tell this story...

I spoke to Josh Ramos several times regarding having him play on my project a few years ago. While we were talking, I happened to mention that I found a cd in a record store that was the A.C. single of "Show Me The Way". I bought it for like $3.00. I told him there were pretty much NO guitars in this version, and they even took out the solo. He had never heard of this version and had me send him a copy. We were laughing like hell over that!  Sorry...I guess you had to be there, but it WAS funny at the time. :D

Josh is one of the nicest, most down-to-earth guys you could ever talk to. I hope we do get to work on something together someday.

Thanks for posting that Jim, KC kicked ass on that clip. I didn't hear much dodging, sounds like he went above and beyond in a couple of places, and that is in the original tuning. Pretty freakin impressive. Especially, like you said, at his age.

Jim - I have to disagree with you here. This is Chalfant doing Chalfant. a great singer in his own right. No Journey/Perry inflections in the vocal at all. Great track, but pure Chalfant, not Perry.

I believe he sings them because...

1. He sang for "The Storm", which was half of Journey.

2. He sang with Journey during Steve's absence, and was in the running (at least I've heard as much) to replace Steve. this is of course before Steve returned for the trial By Fire.

3. He sounds a LOT like Perry vocal-wise. Maybe not as much as a few other singers, but still very similar.

4. Because I told him if he didn't get his ass out there and pimp some Journey songs, that I was going to kick his ass!

I’m glad the band finally struck lightening again with Arnel, but Journey fans can’t help but weep eternal over the Rolie/Chalfant lineup that never came to be.
Starting around the time of Frontiers, Herbie’s executive guidance became ignored.
This reached its peak with the firing of Smitty and Valory, and the change in sound for ROR.
The passing over of Chalfant is probably the band’s second biggest mistake.
In light of what little was accomplished with the non-starter eras of Augeri and JSS, the Chalfant/Rolie lineup looks all the more like a missed opportunity.

Here's "I've Got Alot to Learn About Love" from the same show.
I swear, Chalfant has barely lost a step over the years.

Kev still has the pipes.
Now he just needs to get himself in a band worthy of his talent.
Shooting Star was def. not that.

I agree with most of your post. Journey probably should have grabbed Chalfant when they had the chance, and never looked back. My concern is how Rolie would have (realistically) fit into a revamped Journey. When Rolie made his exit, Journey shook off any pretense of its prog-rock past and became a full-fledged pop-rock band. They became a band that was current, relevant, and most important of all, "radio friendly". Upon his departure from the band, Rolie commented something to the effect that he did not like the direction the band was headed musically. He then went on to front his own Santana-esque/prog-rock band - something apparently more to his liking. IMHO, going with Rolie would have been a step backward for the band. It didn't appear Rolie had any interest in the pop/rock band that Journey had become, and the band certainly couldn't return to being a 70's-ish prog-rock band (not if they were interested in any measure of sucess). And oh, by the way, what would have become of Jon Cain? More rhythm guitar work for Cain, perhaps?

I think it's an oversimplification to pigeonhole Rolie as some meandering latin jazz fusion artist.
During his time with the band, there was a share of radio friendly stuff: Lights, Wheel in the Sky, Any Way You Want It, Feeling That Way, Where Were You etc.
Saint John’s opinion notwithstanding, that stuff holds up to anything that came after him.
In fact, I’d go one further, and say it holds up better...
Unlike the contrived saccharine torch songs of Cain, I think Rolie’s writing came from a place of genuine artistry.

Rolie's later work with The Storm would seem to dispute this.
When the AOR bug bit him, he had no problem getting right back in the saddle.
The Storm doesn't sound like rambling hook-free 70's prog-rock, it sounds as commercial as anything Journey put out - just maybe a little less 80’s synth-heavy.
It is true, however, that Rolie has no interest in making this type of music RIGHT NOW.
Jubilee wrote:And oh, by the way, what would have become of Jon Cain? More rhythm guitar work for Cain, perhaps?

That's for the band to work out. Other groups have done it.
And if you believe Chalfant, the Rolie-Cain lineup came as close as writing together.
In fact, when Chalfant played with the band for Herbie’s birthday in 1993, not only were Rolie and Cain in attendance, but so were Dunbar and Smitty!
Would love to know how that worked out.

Not sure I've ever seen a bass drum that big...except maybe in a marching band.
Oh yeah, that hairy guy can really sing too.

No shit... I was waiting for some hot stripper to come popping out of the huge bass drum. You could hardly see the drummer's head over it.

I don't know... he definitely was capable of making his own hits.

Here is his best effort in my opinion - A song called Megaforce from when he was in 707: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GeoilEjD5I

Yep I love that song.

If I ever got to see KC then I'd be dissapointed if I heard any Journey songs. There is enough on just the two Storm records for a great show.

He should have been Perry's replacement, and should most certainly be singing with the band right NOW....

like that, soaring vocals with passion and heart. Thanks for sharing. Just blew me away... A great start to my Saturday. :D :D :D :D

I have always thought Kevin should have been in Journey. I do believe they would still be making music with today. Kevin would have told them to slow down too if he was having vocal problems. He would not have indured all the crap Augeri had to put up with.
