Howard Leese talks Perry

Postby Dano » Tue Jul 14, 2009 9:06 am

Don't know if this has been posted already, but ex-Heart guitarist Howard Leese has a new album coming out and recently did an interview over at classicrockrevisited.com. He is asked about a song that Jimi Jamison sings on, and mentions that he wanted Perry. Quite a good read. Here's the snippet:

Jeb: “The Vine” with Jimi Jamison was damn good. Jimi did a great song.

Howard: That is one of the only cases where the singer didn’t write the vocal. Jamie Kyle wrote that. She is a singer in Nashville. She wrote “Stranded” for Heart. She is a pro songwriter. We get together when she comes to town. She came over one day and she had a poem that was word-for-word what the song is. I sat down and wrote the chord progression right then. It only took me about an hour. She sang a demo of it and then Deanna sang a demo of it. I wanted to get Steve Perry for it but no one can find him and he doesn’t seem to want to do anything. He is also my wife’s favorite singer so I thought it would be great to have him on the album.

A friend of mine is a drummer who knows Jimi and he played it for him. Jimi loved the song and wanted to sing it. I told him I was hoping for Perry but that I would love to have a guy sing the demo. It is a high tenor type of voice that I was imagining. He told me that if I would pay for the studio time then he would like to go give it a try. He went in and he sent the vocal back and I knew that was it. I didn’t even try to find Perry after that.

Me too. I just thought it was telling that, for all the chatter we hear that he's gearing up to do something, here we have another musician saying that he couldn't be found and seems to be disinterested in doing anything musically.

Quite the list of vocalists on this CD: Joe Lynn Turner, Paul Rodgers, Jamison....

Perry would've been a great inclusion.

My two cents is if Perry is going to do something like FTLOSM, I would rather he didn't. Best to stay retired and be remembered for his days with Journey than some mediocre Solo albums with melodies on prozac. I treat Perry's solo stuff the same way I treat Journey's albums post Perry. Without Schon, Cain and Perry together, it's just not that great. Street Talk had its moments but with Randy Goodrum out of the picture on FTLOSM, it was just blah. The same with Revelation. Arrival had a nice little dose of inspiration by having Blades on board for a few tunes but after that, yech.
I listened to the clips yesterday posted about Pineda songs he wrote, recorded with the Zoo. His Songwriting makes FTLOSM sound like Appetite For Destruction. Pineda is Cain x10 in the sappy, uninspired lyrics department. No thank you.

Give me Schon,/Perry, Perry/Cain, or the three of them together. Otherwise, You got nothing.

I was embarrassed to say publicly I listened to those Pineda penned songs. He definitely cannot write for shit. I guess Jonny will hold his hand, write some more sap, Neal will act the tough guy protector, Ross will pop out of a garbage can somewhere, and They will sell out campsites again. Pineda can sing like a motherfucker, but there is so much more than that.

The songs written by the Monet guy actually would have a chance on Philippine radio but Pineda's stuff was just dismal. Best to stick to singing and let Cain give him a throw away credit on one of the new songs.

Well if someone is looking for Perry I think it would be best to check here.....between the Loons and the Tweeters someone always seems to know where he is...MR seems to be the information source for Perry's whereabouts these days......

Yeah, Howard is a big fan.

Perhaps not a bad move though by Steve here, as the HL CD isn't the most exciting I have heard. Review shortly...

Seems as though a pretty good source is quoting/rumoring Russ Miller as saying the new Perry material will be out by January. I wonder what Nostrildamus will say in this upcoming interview he has. And why was that thread closed that SP Fan In Oregon started?
