Was SP's last song with Journey also the worst?

"Baby I'm a Leavin' You"

Seriously, was it a message to Neal? This song is horrid in every way.

I liked it too. The best two songs on that album (to me anyway), are...

"If He Should Break Your Heart"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIaBODKu ... re=related

And "Message Of Love" (otherwise known as Separate Ways part 2!) :D

Exactly, I love SP, but that song is awful. Let's hope it wasn't a preview of things to come.

Should have been called, "Baby I'm a Leavin' You.........Off This Album!". Seriously I hate this song so much. And there are a few Journey songs that I don't like, but I would still listen to if I had to. This is one that I cannot stand. This is one hidden track that I wish they would have done a better job hiding!!!

Of course it was a message. It's common knowledge that Perry's pet name for Neal was Baby. Neal's name for Steve was Petal.

People bitch about this song but it was just a secret track at the end of the album. A track that I have come to enjoy.

i like the song they added later, I can see it in your eyes...........rocky, fun, and energetic. I also loved Message of love and If he should break your heart..........beautiful. Songs will always appeal to some, and not so much to others. Journey always gave a variety of songs, that touched a broad spectrum of tastes. That is why to me, they were so unique. :D

I think Baby I'm-a Leavin' You was supposed to be a joke song. Kind of like how... well, I'm going to use a crappy example from my pre-teen years, but Green Day has a song called F.O.D., and once the song is finished... if you wait for a few more minutes, the drummer sings an intentionally crappy joke song called "All By Myself". I have no idea how I remember that.

I Can See it in Your Eyes, however, is ROCKIN'! I wish I could get it... damn Japan and their cool bonus tracks!! (The only way I can get it is if I buy the whole album on iTunes/Amazon... hate it when they do that.) Message Of Love and If He Should Break Your Heart are other great songs. Trial By Fire suffered from Too Many Ballads Syndrome (T.M.B.S. for short) overall, though.

I think it was also--it's more common than you think. Also, why it was a hidden track...

As far as worst? Homemade Love or Back Talk, with Can Do right behind (repetitive to the point of making me want to reach for an angle grinder...)

Lyrically, one of the worst songwriting attempts I have ever heard. Musically, I guess it's fine, but you have to search far and wide to get poorer lyrics. Sorry...

As I have mentioned before, I'm a latecomer to the SP/Journey fan-wagon .... bought Infinity to TBF all at once in 2005. Loved TBF the moment I heard it ... all of it, but understand why some consider it a snoozefest because of the predominance of ballads. However, if anyone hasn't bought the re-mastered version which included the previously Japan-only released I Can See it in Your Eyes, you have to run and get this 2006 re-mastered TBF. What a difference ... sonically. I guarantee nobody will think snoozefest again.

A criticism of the original version has been that SP sounded haggard ... croaky. Well, I dunno ... studio magic or what ... his singing has been cleaned up here ... to my ears, anyway. The whole album ... from the instrumentals to the vocals ... is "in your face" crystal clear. And, yes, ICSIIYE really rocks on this album ... whereas before, I only had a crappy bootleg version of this song.

I can't get enough of listening to this album now -- my fav by a mile.

I really can't argue with you there (and I'm a stickler for lyrics), it's just a fun(ny) little ditty that just cracks me up.

Haha, k-pubs and I think alike. I'm not a prude ... but those lyrics in HL made me cringe. Same with Can Do ... repetitive to death is right. There really isn't a SP-sung I don't like, but those 2 caused me to contemplate ... what could he be thinking of coming up with songs like that?

Honestly, I do not believe Steve Perry as we know him, was ever capable of having a bad song. Seriously, whatever this man touched it turned to gold IMO.

About this song:

Postby 4ever4Steve » Sun Sep 06, 2009 12:28 am

"Baby I'm a leavin' you". I don't understand how the "so-called" perfectionist SP could have ever let that be released! He sounds like a 75 year old croaky frog here, joke or no joke. The vocal ranks with the DSB at the White Sox game. It is truly horrid and even in '96 it should have been deep sixed!

Isn't that an old Sam Cooke song? Lora? Cyndy? What's the story here?

I personally like the song but it's definitely not your traditional Journey music.
