Definitely stronger and more confident. I'm finding myself really enjoying seeing the pure joy in his performances, I have a feeling he's missed that more than he ever realized.

He looks like he's very comfortable.
Way better than the first time, even the second time out.
He's shocking people now.

He sounding better and better! JSS chimed in too on Facebook with a really nice piece:

Ok, I’ve sat back and watch the cheers (and jeers), the big hype, the fatuous rumors and lastly, the criticisms of what once was and/or isn’t anymore so now I’ll chime in…as I do!

Being a member of the legendary Journey for all of 11 months, I have my own thoughts about how I feel about this monumentally influential band today…but how I still feel about the phenomenon that is Steve Perry!

Mr Perry has resurfaced recently performing with The Eels, and I will admit, regardless of all the hoopla made out there, I personally just enjoyed hearing THAT voice again…in any capacity! The words ‘aged, husky, raspy’, even ‘too rested’ have been thrown out there but to me personally, that ‘tone’ is still there, the one and only thumb, or rather, voiceprint, still exists and I couldn’t be more excited to hear it again!

A few weeks after the 1st earshot of Steve’s voice rang out, quite possibly a reality check in that YouTube is the end all be all in one’s humble beginnings or belated comebacks, and he’s seemed to spring back even more into his ol’ form. Sure, the Journey tunes he’s doing are a key or 2 lower give or take, but JESUS CHRIST, that tone, it’s there, it’s STEVE F-ING PERRY! If you don't believe me, here's what I am talking about from LA, I believe just last night.

So as I shake off the cobwebs of my own memories with this band that ended 7 years ago, I revel in the (hopeful) return of this monolith who was one of the reasons I could see R&B & Rock be plausible, the man who influenced me in so many ways and now after a 20 year absence, continues to do so…thank you Steve Perry!

Awesome to see him do "Lights"! Would be great to see him do "Faithfully". Always preferred that one anyday over "Open Arms".

"Lights" was pretty good, but I'd still take Pineda in a heartbeat.

Fortunately we are all adults now and don't have to feel like it's one or the other like we did in high school. For the moment's Steve performs, we actually get to have both. And we can enjoy both if you choose. And you can enjoy one or none. Or you can ignore all that and compare.

Sorry - tired of hearing the "I'd rather have..." conversation when no one is putting any choices in front of anyone.

Indeed we are all adults. Which is why I should be able to say "Perry's good, Arnel's better" without reducing you to tears. We've been through this. Comparisons have been made between these singers ad infinitum; where were you then? Or do you just speak up and cry foul when the comparison isn't flattering for Perry?

I think a comparison of whether or not Arnel fits in Journey is fair. And it would be fair to discuss whether Perry fits with the Eels. But what is the point of saying you like Arnel better, as if you have to choose one. There is not a battle for the singing spot in Journey. No judging necessary. So it's ok to like Arnel and it's ok to like Perry and we don't have to worry about which one anyone likes more. That's the beauty of this scenario.

I loved how he sounded on the Journey songs on this last outing. Listening to him on "It's a Motherf*cker" & "Only 16"... indescribably incredible! I'd love to hear much more along those lines from Steve. A huge part of the pleasure of seeing Steve on stage again is in witnessing his enjoyment of performing again. It's a visible, wonderful thing to see. Let's hope this is a warm-up for him, sort of his testing to see if his love of being onstage is still there, and the reaction from the public. Watching the performances and reading the reviews, I'd say he aced it on both counts.

It's hilarious how whiny you all are in defense of Perry. I'm not dogging him, not dissing him. Just calling a spade a spade. If this were Schon or Pineda, you'd be doing the same. I'm not a cultist or delusional. Perry has my respect, not my fanatical devotion. Time to pull your head out of your asses. He sounds good; Pineda sounds better; prime!Perry sounds best of all. If you can't handle opposing opinions, fuck off.

No nerves hit. People shouldn't take themselves too seriously. I'm just saying that a phrase such as "I'd take Arnel in a heartbeat" sounds like words from a playground in elementary school since you know, one has nothing to do with the other. Steve's performance is not causing anyone to have to choose anything. That's all my point is. Carry on.

Look at the bright side folks... with Steve Perry on his own and apparently working and album, along with Journey working on a new album, we're going to get two albums fronted by two very good singers. Where's the problem in that?
