Overheard in quarters today ...

About how he wants to get all the time frames of Journey on stage -- and "some" members of his band aren't into that -- and that he was leaving it alone "for now", but it sounds like he's not letting it go.
My interpretation of that is it has less to do with Perry and more to do with Gregg Rollie. Sounds to me like Neal wants Gregg to join them to do his era of songs, and JC would do his era of songs -- but JC is against the idea.
Assuming my interpretation is right, I'm loving where Neal is coming from. I hope he makes it happen.

I'm thinking that's what Neal is talking about, but it's a pure guess of course. Go and listen to what Neal said in the interview and tell me what you think he meant. Who else in the band would object to different eras of Journey? It doesn't affect Ross. It doesn't affect Smitty. Certainly not Arnel, because there's no way Perry joins -- so that leaves....?
As to what I'd like to see -- well, yeah, I'd love to see both the Rollie and Cain era's jamming out on stage. That's really up to the guys to decide, but, in the end it depends on what Neal really means by his statement. If it's about a walk on to recreate the lineup that recorded a song or two being played in the moment, then yeah, why not let Cain take a breath? I don't think it diminishes him or his contributions to the band.
If it's about Gregg joining the tour for a set full of his era songs on a regular basis, well I could see Cain's objection -- but a compromise is to have Cain stay on stage and play rhythm guitar when Gregg is on the keyboard. Let the group dump the click track and jam out a bit -- like they USED to. That would be a celebration of Journey's history to me.
As for Perry, well nothing would make me happier than to see him bury the hatchet with Neal and work on new stuff together (per Carlos's suggestion) -- but I'd also love to win the Powerball Lottery, and I think the chances of either happening are pretty equal.

Ross and Smith would object to the Raised on Radio era, one could think. Maybe that's why the band rarely plays material off that album other than "Be Good To Yourself".
Gregg has joined the group onstage a couple of times since 2009, and Cain stayed onstage.. I don't get why anybody would have a problem with doing this again for a couple of songs with these Journey/Santana shows.
We need to consider Neal was saying this. I've noticed that he tends to exaggerate when he talks. For example, during the fall of 2015 he commented on a Facebook post and said that ABC was going to air a documentary on him in early 2016. He made it sound like this was going to air nationally. Obviously that didn't happen and it only aired on an ABC affiliate in Utah, i think.
Finally, is there a video anywhere where this click track that is always being discussed on here is noticeable? I've never been able to tell the difference...

I was under the same impression, that Perry was in or around San Diego.

It would be hypocritical of Cain to object to having Rolie back in the band (With Cain still in the band) seeing as Cain seems to want nothing to do with recording/releasing new Journey songs. Cain should either get to work on writing/recording/releasing new Journey material, or step aside and let Rolie take over. Or better yet, Journey get to work on new material with both Cain and Rolie in the band.

My impression from Neal's comment was that it was confined to the context of touring. I personally would love to see Neal write some new songs with Gregg in their blues groove vein, especially with Smitty in the mix, but I don't think that's what he meant with his statement.

No. I understood that Neal's comment was about touring. My point was that if Cain is not willing to work on releasing new Journey songs, then he needs to step aside for someone who will work on new songs with Journey. I have a problem with a guy who wants to only half-heartedly work with Journey, who also objects to bringing in a beloved former member of the band that plays the same instrument. Cain should be all-in or all-out, or else share duties with Rolie.

As of the moment, Journey are just a touring jukebox.
Money seems to be Cain's only motivation anymore, which is sad.

I agree with the both of you.
About JC: I think he is on board with recording now that Smitty is back with them for a spell. Neal said they're already speaking with Caveman, so I have to believe he's had a change of heart.
Having said that, I can't blame him for not wanting to spend money recording records for a handful of people. Recording is expensive, especially when you're add a high profile producer in the mix. The band pays his fee regardless of how the album sells. It's one thing if they could count on breaking even, but how do you muster the will and excitement for inspiration knowing the masses aren't interested and it's almost a guarantee you'll take a loss? Tough thing to do.
I give Neal all the credit in the world. He does it for the love of creating and he's able to tap that love regardless of the outcome for him. That's a special talent in an of itself.
